CHAPTER 2

The fell into a routine very quickly. Bodie had given Katie a couple of hundred pounds to go shopping with and do up her room but she’d initially refused to take it. It had sat on her dresser for three weeks before she spent any of it and then not actually on her room.

“I’m telling you Doyle it’s damn hard. I’d forgotten what it’s like to actually live with someone and hell this is my 17-year-old daughter. I’ve got to be careful. I’m so used to wondering around starkers I’ve got to remember to put on a damn robe.” They’d just finished an 8-hour stake out and both were bushed. A quick take away and then a shower and bed was all either wanted.

“You starkers!” Doyle said shocked. “I don’t believe it; your skin has never seen the sun.” They wandered up the stairs and Bodie whacked him.

“Inside the flat you dolt!” Both took an appreciative sniff. The stairwell smelt of someone’s cooking. Two bellies rumbled in unison at the smell and they grinned at each other.

“Come on, what do you reckon, Indian?” Bodie dug out his keys and stopped dead. That delicious smell was coming from his flat. Grinning at Doyle he opened the door.

“Hey Katie girl, what you up to now?” He called out and she stuck her head out the kitchen.

“Hi Dad, Hi Ray. Dinner’s nearly ready.” Both men looked at each other with glee and headed straight for the kitchen. Sure enough pots and pans were bubbling away.

“Ah Katie, you’re an angel.” Doyle kissed her on the cheek and Katie flushed. In the six months she’d been living with her father she’d developed a king-sized crush on Doyle and it was getting worse.

She’d thought all her female fantasies had come true when she’d come home one night after getting back from the movies late one night and found Ray in her bed. Unfortunately he was dead to the world. Katie had thrown her quilt over him and very lightly kissed him on the cheek and left him there. Smiling at her own audacity she’d curled up on the sofa and slept there for the night. Ray’d been so apologetic the next morning. “Oh jeez, I’m sorry luv, habit you know.” He’d said and he felt so bad about it Bodie had teased him about it for weeks. The thought of him in her bed still made her smile at the memory but the problem was she was started to want much more from him and her Dad would flip. Ray was twice her age literally.

“Why don’t you go and have a shower and freshen up. This will be a while yet.” Katie handed them a beer each and checked the casserole in the oven. Ray came over and peered over her shoulder to see what she was cooking. As usual his close proximity did strange things to her heartbeat.

“God that smells wonderful luv, what is it?” Katie really wished he’d not call her “luv” cause that was what she wanted – to be his love.

“Irish stew with dumplings and cheesecake topped with fruit for desert.” She told them and Doyle dropped to one knee and took her hands in his.

“Oh marry me sweet Katie.” He said and Katie laughed at his antics.

“What the hell are you doing to my daughter Doyle?” Bodie asked peeved off.

“Proposing” Doyle replied still on one knee.

“Proposing or propositioning?” Bodie asked as he threw a towel at Doyle.

“If I’m gonna proposition her I’m not going to do it in front of you chum.” He finally got up off the floor, drained the reminder of his beer and wondered off in the direction of the shower. Bodie shook his head after him.

“You OK luv, you’re a bit flushed.” Bodie put his finger under her chin and made Katie look at him.

“I’m fine Dad. It’s a bit hot in here is all.” She stirred the stew again and put it in back in the oven. I can’t tell him I’ve to a huge thumping crush on his partner; Dad would flip she thought resignedly. Shame though.

Bodie and Doyle sat at the table, hands resting on their stomachs and groaned. They were stuffed to the gills. Doyle let out a soft burp

“Oh excuse me Darl. That was terrific. God where did you learn to cook like that?” he asked as Katie picked up the dishes and carried them to the kitchen.

“Just out of cookbooks.’ She called out from the kitchen. “Mum never cooked and I got sick and tired of take away. Everyone always loved Irish stew. Warms you up on cold nights but I don’t know about the cheesecake though. I've never made it before.” She brought out two cups of steaming freshly brewed coffee.

“You don’t want to come and live with me do you luv?” Doyle asked taking a sip of the coffee. He was in heaven.

“Absolutely not!” Bodie said sipping his own coffee.

“Aw, you’re no fun!” Doyle complained and Katie laughed at them. She stood behind Doyle and ruffled his curls. He was taking every bit of Katie’s attention too.

“You behave yourself sunshine!” Bodie warned. Doyle gave him a look as if to say who me! The cheesecake was demolished in the same way as the meal had been. They stood in the kitchen and helped Katie clean up. It had tuned into a fun evening. Both men had forgotten their tiredness. Ray let out a jaw-cracking yawn and picked up his coat.

“I’m going sunshine, seeing I don’t have a bed here any more.” He said to Katie.

“Oh Ray you can have my bed if you want it. I can sleep on the sofa.” Katie hastily assured him. Doyle enveloped her in a hug and kissed her forehead.

“I’m joking sweetheart. Your Dad would have my bal – um guts for garters if he found me in your bed. I’m not that stupid.” He quickly amended what he’d been about to say. He was drawn to his young girl more than he wanted to admit but he was not going to do any thing about it – Bodie really would have his balls if he did but he was tempted. She reminded him of a young Audrey Hepburn. Dark hair, sapphire blue eyes and milky white skin and a figure, wow what a figure! This was a woman with curves; dangerous curves indeed.

“Bloody formal dinners – jeez I hate these things.” Bodie scowled at the engraved invitation sitting on his desk. Doyle had one too. Hell most of the squad probably did. Time to put on the monkey suits and show off. “Must be budget time.” He said.

“Yer, who you gonna take? It says ‘and partner’” Doyle asked. Bodie shook his head

“No idea. I’ve not had a date in 8 months. You?” Doyle shook his head.

“Don’t know. Maybe Betty?” He’d asked her to a couple of these damn things. He picked up the phone and buzzed her. Bodie listened to the one sided conversation.

“Yer no worries Betty. Just curious. See you later luv.” He shook his head at Bodie.

“No she’s going with Murphy.” Doyle glared at the damn invitation.

“How about Katie. Do you think she’d like to go?” He asked suddenly and Bodie glared at him with open hostility.

“That’s my daughter you’re talking about Doyle.” Bodie snarled at him.

“I know that Bodie, it’s just an invitation to a party and she’s a kid for God’s sake.”

“Not any more! As she so delicately put it she’s not ‘jail bait’ any more. She tuned 18 two weeks ago remember.” Bodie was still trying to get used to being a father but now he was Dad to a legal adult. Katie had a party for a few of the girls she was now working with and she’d invited both of them as well. Neither had gone but they’d taken her out to a posh restaurant for dinner on the actual night of her birthday. Ray had given her a gold chain and Bodie a diamond to go on it. She’d given them both a kiss and hug for it.
