Point of No Return pt 2
Point of No Return
Part 2
Grissom stared at his computer screen and sighed. The letter on the screen before him would change his entire life forever, if he worked up the nerve to actually turn it in. In the years before he had entertained the idea of leaving the lab, but now he had a very good reason to do just that. Sara. The lab had always been in important part of his life, but now he knew that his life was empty without Sara and he couldn’t risk losing her. He saved the file and looked around his townhouse. The team had gone home a few hours ago and the remnants of their poker night were evident all through the living room and kitchen. Usually Grissom hated a mess and would have the townhouse back to its normally spotless condition in no time, but tonight the mess would wait. He had to see Sara.
Sara walked into her living room after her shower and stretched out on her sofa. The weeks she stayed with Jacqui had been fun, but she was more than happy to be back home and have her privacy back. She leaned over and picked up her square black tote and unzipped it, taking out the supplies that were stashed inside. She never thought she would be interested in crafts, but watching Jacqui and her mom sew quilt blocks was fascinating and it wasn’t long before they had a needle in her hand and were giving her lessons. She had finished the first block in two days and the sense of accomplishment encouraged her to do more. By the end of the first week, Jacqui’s mom had her at a quilt shop helping her pick out supplies, a pattern and fabrics. Grissom had told her more than once she needed a distraction, and four years after he mentioned it she finally had one.
Just the thought of Grissom made her smile and she was tempted to text him again, but she didn’t want to bother him during his game with the guys. Especially after he told her how they started teasing him after her last message. She started to reach for her Sidekick and stopped herself. “This is just ridiculous. He’ll call me when he’s ready.” She was about to pick up her needle when there was a knock at her door. She put her supplies down on the table and looked through the spy hole before opening the door. Her door was barely open when Grissom reached for her and wrapped her into a bear hug. Sara laughed as she pushed the door closed behind him.
“This is just a guess, but I take it you missed me.”
Grissom smiled into her hair. “Yeah I did. I never thought I could get used to having someone in my life. Trying to lay low has been so hard, and now with Ecklie constantly next door with his niece I don’t know how much more I can take.”
“I know. I’ve had trouble sleeping without you holding me. It won’t be long before we can deal with Ecklie and then we can be together whenever we want.”
Grissom pulled back and tucked her hair behind her ear. “That’s partly why I came over tonight. Apparently there’s a power shift in the lab.”
Sara looked puzzled until he explained as he led her to the couch. “Ecklie is being promoted to Director and his niece is taking over the AD job. He’s giving her free reign to run the lab as she sees fit, and she’s planning on some changes to policies. Including the one dealing with interoffice relationships. She said the one that’s in place now is vague and the lab in New York had one very cut and dry, so that’s what she wants to incorporate out here.”
“So what does it mean for us?”
Grissom looked over at her and saw the apprehension in her eyes. “It could make things very difficult for us to make our relationship public. We knew that was a possibility before we came home, and we both know we have other options if it comes down to it.”
He wrapped his arms around her and held her tight, hoping his touch would ease her fears. They sat holding each other until a peaceful sleep overcame them.
Michelle was busy organizing her new office when her uncle walked in and closed the door behind him. “I see you’re getting settled in. If you have a few minutes I’ll fill you in on your staff.”
Michelle sat and listened to her uncle highlight the careers of each member of the staff, including things that weren’t in the personnel files. She thought this was a nice touch on his part to help her get to know the staff beyond the official version, but she noticed a change when he started telling her about Sara Sidle and Gil Grissom. At the mention of Sidle’s name Ecklie became irritated and the only thing positive he could think of about her was her solve rate. With Grissom it was worse. Michelle looked across her desk at her uncle and smirked. “You really don’t like those two much do you?”
“What’s to like? Sidle is time bomb ready to blow. She’s insubordinate, arrogant, and opinionated. Frankly she should have been fired long ago, but Grissom keeps covering for her. And Grissom? He’s been a pain since day one. I was trying to get some things changed in the lab for months, then all of a sudden this 22-year-old kid comes waltzing in here and everyone thinks the kid walks on water. So he just graduated with a PhD, big deal. But all of a sudden, anything he wants, he gets. Now here it is years later and Grissom still gets what he wants. Sure I got the promotions, but when people think of the lab the first person they think of is Grissom. The man can do practically anything he wants and get away with it. He covers for people, saves their jobs when they really deserve to be fired, and no one does anything. It took him making an actual mistake for me to split up his team without getting flack from the boss.”
Michelle couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “So basically you don’t like Grissom because you’re jealous, and you don’t like Sidle because she won’t kiss your ass.”
“No! Michelle that’s not it at all. What I don’t like about Grissom is the way everyone takes his word as law and doesn’t question what he does. He didn’t fire Warrick when he screwed up. He brought in Sidle for the investigation and then hired her, what his motive was for that only God knows. He covered for Catherine when she screwed up. Hell he’s covered for Sidle too. Meanwhile no one else can get any respect for their work. And don’t even get me started on their relationship.”
That peaked Michelle’s interest. “What relationship? Are you saying that Dr Grissom and Ms. Sidle are a couple?”
Ecklie sighed. “I don’t know. They could be. You’ve never seen them work together. They just know what the other needs, without saying anything. Grissom will be collecting evidence and she’s handing him whatever he needs before he says a word, and she’s not even looking at what he’s doing a lot of the time. Any time those two work a scene together the entire police department starts talking about it because it’s just so weird. People don’t usually have that kind of a connection unless there is something going on, but I’ve never been able to catch them or prove it. It may be the one thing that can get them both out of the lab. That’s where you come in.”
Michelle listened to her uncle’s plan for Grissom and Sidle and she smiled. Her uncle could be absolutely devious when he set his mind to it, and he obviously had. As Ecklie left her office she giggled. *This is going to be fun. He’ll finally get what’s coming to him.*
