Getting into the swing of things
BTW, I own nobody except Adam's team. I forgot to put that in there. This is starting to move toward a Gregcentric fic, by the looks of it, but I honestly won't stick to it. There's going to be something about everyone in this. I'd love a review. No reason to flame, because I don't do that to people. If you don't like something, just don't read. It makes life simpler. Thanks!
Greg looked around at the lab in dismay. I'm back...yay for me. He put the lab coat on and started working on the various things that called for his attention. He couldn't believe the new schedules and now he was stuck at work until 4PM. He'd have to crash when he got home just to catch up on sleep and make it in for his brand new 6AM shift start. He felt ill at having to switch his sleep schedule around so drastically. Sleeping at night...who had ever heard of something so weird?
He glanced up as someone entered the hallway on the other side of the glass partition from Greg. This might be Adam. He had been very curious to meet the newly hired morning supervisor. In fact, it was his salary that had caused the cuts in the lab so that he and Mia were forced to work all shifts between them. He shrugged. He guessed it wasn't this guy's fault. Ecklie could have found another way. It had slightly amused him when the announcement had first been made. Sofia and Cat looked like they were going to strangle Ecklie. Greg often wondered if Cat realized that she would see less of her daughter now than if she were back on midnights. Oh well. It wasn't really his concern.
He was deep in concentration when the door to the lab opened. "Sanders?"
Greg looked up into the face of the man he had thought to be the new supervisor for days. "That's me. What can I do for you?"
Adam narrowed his eyes as if trying to determine something about the younger man. Then he suddenly smiled. "I'm Adam Valentine. Please no jokes." He smirked as if he were used to people teasing him about his romantic last name. "I wanted to meet the man that I'm going to be relying so heavily upon."
Greg stripped off his gloves and came to the other side of the lab bench. He shook hands with the older man and studied him. "Pleased to meet you. I'll do my best for you, but I'm a bit rusty in the lab department." He could tell that Adam was the type of guy that had to wear matching socks and never walked out the door without his hair gel properly in place. He was a very well groomed man and he couldn't be more than 45. There was a slight graying at the temples, but the thick black hair on his head showed no other signs of aging. Slight lines formed around his eyes and lips to show that he had either smiled a lot in his lifetime or he was just fortunate that his aging made it appear that way. It was the green eyes that held Greg's attention. They weren't dull like most. They were very bright and he noticed a bit of amusement in them. He realized it was probably because he had studied him in silence for so long and that he was still holding his hand. "Uh...sorry." He let his hand drop.
Adam smiled again. "It's alright. Studying people is what you know. I wanted to tell you that I understand that it might take you awhile to get in the swing of things around here since you've been in the field. Greg, you'll be back there again. I'm sure of it."
Greg nodded, grateful for the encouragement. "I guess most of my time will be spent working with you. It's nice to know that I don't have a bear of a boss."
"Oh, I wouldn't be so sure about that. I can be rough when I want to be. I expect the job to be done right. I don't tolerate messups, but I do respect someone that works their ass off to fix things when they do disappoint me. Conrad has given me full reign over who works in the mornings and who will be looking for work elsewhere. I'm sure that won't be a problem with us. Your reputation precedes you and if I'm not satisfied with something, you'll do what you need to so that I'm happy again, won't you?"
Greg felt his throat tighten with a bit of anxiety. Why did it feel as if he were about to sign his soul over to the devil. He shook off the feeling, certain that he was just being overly dramatic. "Yeah, absolutely."
"Good. Now, I've handpicked my team and they should be here soon. I'd appreciate it if you could join us for a meeting in about an hour."
Greg nodded. "I'll be there."
"The conference room at noon then." He left quickly and with an air of superiority that left Greg a bit confused whether he liked the man or not. He was pretty sure that he did and went back to work.
The hour passed quickly and he went to the conference room. He noticed that there was nobody else there and he just found a seat and picked at a hangnail. Within five minutes he was more confused than ever. Four men strolled in and sat down. They all were wearing suits and Greg instantly sat up a bit straighter. He thought back and realized that Adam had also been wearing a suit. Why do I get the feeling that I don't fit in very well?
Adam walked in soon after and smiled at everyone. "Greg, I'd like to introduce you to some colleagues of mine." He gestured around the table as he spoke their names. "David Bronson, Brian Gephart, Kevin Crawford, Jason Sherbrook...gentlemen, this is Gregory Sanders."
Greg tried not to frown at his full name. He just smiled at everyone. "Call me Greg, please."
The meeting droned on and Greg took the time to observe each of the men, all easily in their mid thirties. He took note of the similarities first. They were all men which was weird and they were all white which was also weird. In a place like Las Vegas, Greg felt that diversity was key in getting a job done properly. Apparently Ecklie had wanted to let Adam do whatever he felt was best, but Greg thought it odd that Conrad would go along with something that outwardly looked so discriminating.
Adam was a bit taller than Greg and the oldest of all of them he figured. He was very muscular. Greg hadn't been able to tell that before, but the man had taken off his jacket during the meeting and the muscles strained against the fabric. Greg's gave moved to David. He looked scruffy. His brown hair was shaggy and he easily had a day or two worth of beard growth on his face that held dirt brown eyes. He was average height. Probably close to Greg. He didn't look like he belonged in a suit at all. He wasn't muscular, but very thin and he had a beer gut that would put most men to shame. He looked at Greg just then and smiled. Greg grinned back and then looked to Adam again so that it seemed he was paying attention.
Greg was trying to calm himself. David's teeth had been yellowed horribly and there was a chip out of one. Greg didn't consider himself a snob, but it seemed that a few hundred bucks for bleaching wouldn't be such a bad idea. He started listening to Adam and realized that he was just going over basic things that Greg already knew. Policy and procedure wasn't really anything new so he let his gaze wander again.
Brian, Kevin, and Jason were all well over six feet by a few inches. It was hard to tell who the tallest was, but it didn't really matter. Greg knew he'd be looking all of them in the chin if he stood next to them. Brian had an angular face with brown hair and brown eyes and was extremely thin, but it looked as if he had a runner's body. His hands were large and he was very tan. Greg had seen the type out on the beach more than a few times. All that sand and surf and those guys just ran on it and nothing else. What a waste. Greg was certain that Brian was very strong despite his thin stature.
Kevin looked more like Adam. He had thick black hair and thick eyebrows that made his bright blue eyes stand out. He was strong looking and basically made Greg think of a GQ magazine cover back when they had hot guys on it and not the scrawny types. Greg looked down at the table and then back up and was shocked to see Kevin was looking at him with a hungry look in his eyes. Greg immediately looked back to Adam. Gay? I suppose it's possible. The hot ones always are.
When he no longer felt Kevin's burning gaze on him, he looked over to the last member of their little group. Jason was scary looking as hell. He was probably balding which is why he had chosen to shave his head. The brown hair could only be seen on the goatee he was sporting. He didn't even really know if it qualified as a goatee. It was a bit longer and made him look like some nightmare biker. His eyes were brown, but they were more pronounced because of the eyebrows...or lack of them. Greg couldn't remember when the trend of shaving off one's eyebrows had been in style, but wasn't about to tell Jason that.
Another thing about Jason was that he was a big guy. He could easily crush Greg with one blow. The guy had to be 300 pounds and although he was fat, he didn't look that fat. Greg was sure there was a lot of muscle on that body and he didn't want to be around if he ever got pissed off. He looked up just in time for Adam to speak to him.
"Now Greg...I hope you understand that it isn't personal, but I prefer a professional dress code. You will be working primarily with me and I'd like it if you'd dress appropriately."
Greg just nodded. "Yes, sir. I expected as much."
Adam smiled, happy that the newest person on his team was so willing to do what he was told. "Good. You are all dismissed. You have your assignments." He watched them all get up to leave. "Greg, you will stay."
Greg sat down again and waited for the door to close behind the others. He jumped as Adam's hand came down hard on the table in front of him. He looked up into Adam's face and shrank back at the rage there. "Adam?..."
"Mr. Valentine would be better for now. How dare you sit here and ignore me. I'm your supervisor, you little rat. You just set a very bad example for the others. They know how to show respect and yet I caught two of them looking at you when I should have been their focus of attention."
"But---But I didn't mean t-t-to..." Greg closed his eyes. Damn it...not my stutter. Don't come back now. He tried to talk, but only got more lost in his own words. Silent tears fell from his eyes in frustration. He tried to jerk his hand away when Adam grabbed it, but the new supervisor held firm.
"Hey...Hey I'm sorry. Greg, look at me."
Greg looked up and continued to choke on his words."
"Greg, I want you to stop trying to talk. Just stop. Okay, take a few deep breaths." Adam's voice had softened and was soothing to Greg at the moment.
Greg closed his eyes and breathed in a few more times before finally looking at Adam again. "Mr. Valentine. I apologize for.."
Adam waved the apology off. "No need. I am the one that should be apologizing. I never should have snapped at you like that. I'm under a great deal of stress. Please call me Adam, too. Greg, how long has your stuttering affected you?"
Greg shook his head. "My whole life. I'm good now. I really need to get back to work." He stood up, but stopped when Adam cleared his throat.
"You weren't dismissed, Greg." The steely glare made Greg sit back down again. "I shouldn't have gone off on you like that, but I still demand respect. That issue hasn't changed. My men are interesting in that they are working to bring criminals to justice, but they are also a hair away from being criminals themselves. They're passionate and that clouds their judgments at times. I had to pull Jason off of a suspect once because the person had accused Jason of being a crook. Jason crushed his windpipe."
Greg instinctively put his hand to his own throat. "He looks very strong."
"Yes, he is. Thankfully, the security tape came up missing and the suspect also went missing. So there was no investigation. David had a wife and child once. The wife accused him of fondling the girl. All charges were dropped and the record was wiped clean, thanks to me. It's as if it never happened. The wife and little girl died in a car accident last year so we no longer have to worry about that coming back to us."
Greg felt a cold chill go down his spine. "That's really a coincidence that everything seems to work out for your team."
Adam grinned. "Isn't it? Brian had an old girlfriend try to claim he raped her. She was in a hang gliding accident. The charges never even got to the authorities. And Kevin?" He smiled. "Kevin has a way of drinking before he gets in his car. Thank goodness cops don't make a lot of money. They always need more."
Greg leaned back and studied Adam. "You're saying.."
"I'm saying that you should do what you're told and not cross us. As far as I'm concerned you are now a part of my team. I'm going to make that clear to Conrad as well. Remember Greg...bad things happen to people that can't keep their mouths shut."
Greg nodded, thinking back to his past and knowing that he couldn't go through it again. Everything was hurting him about this group. He knew that his secrets would come out if he had to be around them every day. "I understand."
"Good. Now get to work."
Greg hurried out of the room and ran to the bathroom where he tried to breathe normally. He leaned over the sink and splashed some water on his face. He heard the door open, but couldn't focus at the moment and he figured he could just tell whoever it was that he had eaten some bad Chinese food.
He looked up to the mirror and gasped. Kevin was right behind him and staring at him in the mirror. "I saw you looking at me."
"Uh...yeah. I was just trying to remember everyone. It's how I get acquainted with people." Is that the best you can come up with Sanders?
Kevin reached around Greg to put his hands on either side of the mirror so that he was pressed up against the lab tech. "I just wanted you to know that I was looking at you, too."
"Really? That's...great!" His voice went up and cracked as he felt Kevin's erection pressing hard against his ass. "I really have to go back to work."
"Come on, Greg. I'm hitting on you. Are you telling me that you're not the least bit attracted to me?"
"I didn't say that. You're attractive, but...well...you're a bit intimidating."
Kevin immediately backed off. "Hey, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it like that. I just go after what I want."
Greg turned to face him. "That's cool. I admire that. But I'm not-"
"Gay?"
"No, I wouldn't say that. I don't put limits on my sexuality."
"Ah. Bisexual."
"No, I don't like labels either. I'm just...sexual." He instantly regretted the words when Kevin was on him again. This time he could feel the erection on his stomach and tried to look up. When he did, Kevin caught him in a deep kiss. Greg's gasp left him wide open for Kevin's tongue to plunder his mouth. Greg thought he should respond, but couldn't. He was shocked and wasn't quite sure what to do in a situation like this.
Soon Kevin stood straight again. "Shocked you, huh?"
"Yeah, just a little." Greg resisted the urge to wipe his mouth.
"I'll catch you later, Greg. In fact, maybe sooner than you think."
Kevin walked out of the room and Greg leaned heavily against the sink. Eventually he made his way out of the bathroom and to the lab where Mia had already arrived.
She glanced up at him with a smile, but instantly changed to concern. "Greg? Are you okay?"
Greg nodded. "I don't want to talk about it. I'm just tired."
Mia was going to press further, but didn't want to upset her friend so she just did her work. When Catherine came in she was pissed off about something and Greg didn't want to deal with her attitude. After telling her to shove her labs up her ass, he walked to the break room. Catherine just stared at Mia in shock. "What was that about?"
"He's been up for 24 hours. My advice is to lay off."
Cat snorted. "Jack Bauer can do it."
Sofia walked in at that moment. "Jack Bauer? Oh...that yummy '24' guy? Yeah, he can do a lot of things."
The three women forgot their issues with each other long enough to discuss how hot Jack and Tony were. They didn't even notice Warrick come in, roll his eyes, and leave again. He headed to the break room and noticed that Greg was lost in thought. "Hey Greggo...what's happening?"
Greg jumped and sloshed his coffee over the edge of the mug. Immediately his hands started trembling and he put the mug down. "Hi Warrick. Ready to start your day?" His tremulous smile gave away almost instantly that not everything was okay.
"Greg, are you okay? You look like you've seen a ghost."
"Something like that. Uh...I told Catherine to shove her labs up her ass."
Warrick spit out his coffee onto the floor and looked at Greg before wiping his mouth. Then he burst out in laughter. "Shit...no you didn't."
"Yeah...yeah, I did."
"Damn, you're serious. That's funny. I wouldn't sweat it. Sometimes she needs to be knocked on her butt."
Greg looked up at the clock. "I'm leaving early. Mia's here and I've been up for awhile."
"Yeah, see you later, man. Take care."
Greg grabbed his things and tried to figure out how he was going to have time to buy a suit and get some sleep. He was walking to the bus stop since his car was in the shop when he realized that a car was driving next to him. He stopped and looked into the eyes of Kevin. "Need a ride?"
"No, I'm going to go home."
"Come on...we'll go get you a suit. It won't take long and I know a great place. Then I'll take you straight home."
Greg considered it and really didn't want to, but there was something about Kevin that made him not want to insult him by refusing him. "Sure. I guess so." He got into the car and started to think of ways to get out of the swing of things.
Greg looked around at the lab in dismay. I'm back...yay for me. He put the lab coat on and started working on the various things that called for his attention.
