Chapter One ~ You Need To Know

Wake Up Older

Chapter One ~You Need To Know

The steady hum of the fridge was the only sound that was heard through out the apartment. Logan looked around the darkened apartment with fuzzy eyes. His eyes drifted over the walls, the endtables, all the family photos, the little odds and ends that made it feel like home. His house was much nicer in size, but as for comfort the Mars' home won out. Veronica had vanished down the hall almost twenty minutes ago, right after she had lead him into the home and had asked him to wait on the couch. His tears had finally ceased about ten minutes ago, and now the embarassment was starting to seep in.

He had broken down the second she said she was happy to see him. His whole body crumbled and he just gave in. He just knew that when she opened the door to find him she would be disappointed. He had be prepared for her eyes to shine with affection for another man. But all he had seen was relief that he was alright, and hope for what he was going to say.

So he broke down, and he could see the sadness in her eyes then, the pain she was feeling, not just her pain, but he knew she could feel his pain to. So he let her lead him into her home and onto the couch. She then told him quietly to wait and that she would be back soon. Then with a fleeting glance full of sympathy she had made her way down the hall. That was almost thirty minutes ago now. He was starting to think this was a bad idea. Maybe she had called the police and was waiting for them to come. Afterall, she did think he was a murderer. Suddenly fear slammed into him and his chest constricted. Just as he was about to split he heard her soft footsteps coming down the hall.

Veronica stared into her closet, her hands on her hips and a strained expression on her face. Of all times to have nothing to wear. Her hopeful eyes scanned the limited contents of her clset as if she were waiting for the perfect outfit to jump out and scream 'Here I am, Pick Me'. But that didn't happen.

So finally she picked out a simple all american girl outfit of itty bitty jean shorts and a tight fitting pink tank top that read 'Role Model ' Scooting into her newly chosen attire Veronica made her way over to the mirror and sparsely applied lipgloss and mascara and brushed out her hair, glad that she had decided to let it grow some.

Satisfied with her appearance she slid out of her room and snuck into the hall bathroom. She slowly closed the door, trying to avoid disturbing her guest. Turning on the light she blinked against the harsh glare and made her way to the towel closet, grabbing out two washcloths, wetting one with warm water and leaving the other dry.

Finally taking one last look into the mirror she giggled at the absurdness of it all and switched the light off and made her way down the hall, made her way toward the broken man on the couch.

Logan scooted over, making himself as small as possible on the couch, hopng to give Veronica plenty of room. She ignored his attempts and sat right beside him, the bare skin of her thigh rubbing against his jeans. She looked at him, a motherly expression firnly in place. She held out the wet washcloth to him and refused to look away from him until he took it from her.

This was all so confussing to him. Less than 12 hours ago this girl that was now playing nursemaid was accussing him of murdering the love of his life. Now she was all sweet and caring. Something wasn't right.

"Ronnie....I mean Veronica?" Logan asked after he washed the dried tears from his face.

"Yeah?" Veronica asked him, a smile coming to her face at the use of her old nickname.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" Logan asked, a bit of anger seeping into his words "Why are you being human to me now?"

Veronica sighed to herself and looked away from the young man sitting beside her. Getting up from her seat beside him Veronica moved over to the coffee table that sat in the center of the room and sat down, facing Logan she put her hands between her knees and looked down at the floor. "Logan, there is something you need to know, I have to tell you ....About Lilly. But first I need to start at the begining, where it all started.

For the next three hours Veronica told Logan everything, from the day at the car wash when Lilly told him she had a secret to that night when Veronica left her Father at the hospital. She told him everything, the hard truths, the lies that had been erased everything. And then she watched him breakdown again. But this time their weren't any tears, just screams. Denials screamed to the top of his lungs, painful heart wrenching screams that made Veronica's heart break for him.

He screamed for almost twenty minutes and then a eerie silent calm settled over Logan. He looked at Veronica, his eyes empty for the first time since Lilly's furneral. He looked at her and then he stood up and headed for the door.

Veronica felt a extreme panic hit her. She rushed after him, catching him just as he started to open the door. "Wait....what....?" She was at a loss for words, she couldn't make her mouth form the words.

"I'm leaving, Ronnie. I have to." Logan said, his voice cold and hard, empty.

Veronica's heart sped up and her throat closed. "Where? How long? Are you...are you...coming back?" Veronica's voice broke, her eyes pleading.

"No. I don't think. I'm not sure. I don't have anything left Veronica. I have no reason to stay, to come back." And before she could tell him different he was gone, out of the door out of the parking lot, out of neptune, out of her life.
