Three Amigos

It seemed like a long night when Lizzie stayed over at Miranda’s with her and Gordo. They finished up tossing old magazines into the trash, newspapers and hauled themselves back into the couch to watch some HBO.
“Ohh, I can’t wait to watch ‘Moonstruck.’ It is sooooo romantic!” Miranda crooned. She plopped back onto the couch next to Lizzie.
Gordo gave her a puzzled look. “Easy there, Miranda. You’re already about to break into sweat!” he teased her.
Miranda looked at him and stuck her tongue out. “Shut the fuck up, Gordo,” Miranda said, holding onto the remote control.
Lizzie rested her head on the back of the couch and sighed. “Oh, you’re just upset because your dad decided to stay behind in Mexico after he promised to be home for your first summer vacation from high school.”
Miranda smiled. “I’m just glad that high school is out and we’re in college now. I can’t believe it’s only one week since we started and we had to do this fucking major project!”
Lizzie chuckled. “Welcome to college.” She looked up at Gordo. “Gordo?”
“Yeah?”
“Get a haircut.”
“Yeah, get a haircut!” Miranda echoed.
Gordo pretended to look offended and held his hair. “Why? I like my hair. It’s very college-looking.”
Lizzie rolled her eyes. “Yeah, right. Hey, Miranda, when is your mom getting home? She said she was just going to get some popcorn and Rocky Road from the store.”
“I don’t know. There’s more important things than food.”
Gordo scoffed. “Yeah, like what?”
Lizzie and Miranda smiled. “Like… Nicholas Cage!!!” they both screamed in unison.
Gordo shook his head. “Damn, I could never understand these chicks.”
“Um, what was that, Gordo?” Lizzie asked.
“Huh? Oh, nothing.”
“Uh, I think he called us chicks,” Miranda said.
“Really? You don’t say!” Lizzie said sarcastically. Both girls laughed then took pillows from the couch and started hitting Gordo.
“Hey, hey, girls! Watch my hair!” Gordo complained. “This is not very matured!” He stood up to take a pillow and hit the girls as well. They all laughed until Miranda had to pull out when the phone rang.
“Hello?” she answered.
“Hi, Miranda, is Lizzie still at your house?” Jo asked on the other line.
“Yes, she is. Do you want to talk to her?”
“No, it’s almost midnight, sweetie. I’d like for Lizzie to come home now. It’s a school night.”
“Oh… gee, I guess I lost track of time. I’m sorry, Mrs. McGuire.”
Jo smiled. “Oh, no problem. Just tell your mom and Lizzie that I’d like her home really soon.”
“Ok, sure. Lizzie will be home soon.” With that, she hung up and ran back into the living room. Gordo and Lizzie continued the pillow fight. “Ok, ok, hey, hey, guys!” she shouted.
Lizzie and Gordo stopped and looked at Miranda. “Lizzie, your mom called. She wants you home now.”
“Is something wrong?”
“It’s almost midnight. You should go home.”
Lizzie sighed and dropped the pillow on the floor. “Yeah, I guess she’s right. Did you tell her that your mom’s not home yet?”
“Ohhhh…. Uh, no, not really. I guess I kind of forgot. Well, hey, how about we all walk you home?” she suggested.
“Yeah, we can walk you home,” Gordo agreed.
“Well, you know what? I don’t want to cause you trouble and miss the movie. I’ll walk home myself.”
“What? Lizzie, you can’t. It’s dark and late out there.”
Lizzie rolled her eyes. “Yeah, what’s your point? It’s only two blocks away. What’s the worst thing that can happen?”
“Anything can happen, Lizzie. Forget the damn movie. We can walk you home.”
“Lizzie, numbers in people do matter. Come on, we’ll walk you.”
Lizzie sighed. Ah, her friends worried too much. “Guys, it’s two blocks away. There’s no point of taking me home for two blocks then walking back two blocks again.”
Gordo and Miranda looked at each other. “Lizzie, are you sure?” Miranda asked, undoubtedly.
Lizzie nodded. “Absolutely. I’ll see you guys in class tomorrow, okay?”
Miranda sighed. “Alright but just be careful out there.”
Gordo walked on along with them to the door. “Be very careful, Lizzie,” he added. Miranda opened the door for Lizzie and she and Gordo said good night to her as she stepped off Miranda’s front porch.
