Afraid Since Ariel

Chapter Two: Afraid Since Ariel

Lorelai frantically tried to twist the doorknob back and forth, but it still wouldn’t budge. She started to panic. I should have known something like this would happen! Growling at the door, she kicked it a few times trying to persuade it to open, but the only thing that it seemed to produce was a chuckle from Luke.

She turned around to face him, arms crossed, clearly not amused by the situation.

“Oh, you think this is funny do you?”

When he simply threw his hands up in the air in defeat not wanting to add any more reasons for them to keep fighting, she sighed and turned around again not quite ready to give up on getting out of there.

Luke laughed to himself. It was simple really, since he was using the old lock instead of the broken deadbolt, all he had to do was take the key and unlock it from the inside. He took his eyes off of Lorelai and began searching for his keys. At first he really didn’t think it to be that odd when he hadn’t found them on the counter where he had left them, he simply went out back hoping that he had set them down in the kitchen. He hadn’t.

Luke came back out of the kitchen intending to search through the pockets of his coat, but found the sight of Lorelai running her fingers along the sills of all of the windows more intriguing.

Drawing back each and every net curtain, Lorelai examined the frame of each window, determined that she had somehow missed an opening. Running across the diner, from one window to another, she clambered on top of chairs to look for hidden windows. Windows, that perhaps weren’t too small for her to squeeze through. There weren’t any.

Luke watched on as Lorelai breathed in deeply, finally giving up on searching for what ever it was that she happened to be searching for. She shut her eyes and leaned against the door, sliding down slowly until she was sitting on the floor with her knees drawn tightly against her chest. He was about to go over and try to console her when her head shot up, scrambling to get to her feet and ran into the storeroom. He heard her desperately banging against the back door trying to get it to open, once again to no avail.

All of a sudden it all started to make sense. The unexpected visit from Lorelai with the coffee he hadn’t asked for, the front door, the back door, his missing keys, and last but not least, the mysterious disappearance of Rory. He called out her name just as she walked through the doorway and back into the diner. To see her so determined to get out of the diner, to get away from him, made him hate himself for not forgiving her the morning after the fight when she had called him to apologize. Instead he had run away from it, from her, going to the only place that he could think of to get away from it all: the lake.

“I think I figured it… out.” He said as he watched her completely ignore him and head up the stairs to his apartment.

Luke scurried around the end of the counter and yelled after her as he began to follow her. “Lorelai! What are you doing?!”

He heard the doorknob hit the wall as she carelessly threw the door open and rushed inside. Seconds later he was standing there watching as Lorelai moved blankets, bookcases, dressers, furniture, anything and everything that was there.

“Why doesn’t he have one of those little helicopter ladder thingies like any normal person that lives on the second floor has?! Damn him for not being practical when it comes to escaping a burning building! Uhg!”

She walked over to the closest window and began unlocking it. “I guess I’ll just have to try jumping then. That tree doesn’t look so far –“

Luke didn’t think he heard that right. Did she actually just say that she was going to jump out my window? “Lorelai!”

He rushed over to her just as she slipped one leg over the sill and pulled her back into the room, shutting the window as fast as he could. Luke sighed as he turned to her and placed one palm on each of her arms, rubbing them comfortingly almost as if he was trying to keep her warm. Her eyes were red and puffy, tear tracks staining her face making way for new ones.

She felt so helpless. There was no way out, and here she was standing mere inches away from the one person that she had been trying to get away from.
Lorelai finally gave in and leaned into his chest, wrapping her arms around his waist.

Although surprised at first, he quickly enveloped her in his arms pulling her as close as possible. His heart almost broke when he felt her sobbing against his chest, hot tears seeping through the fabric of his shirt. He slid his hand up her back and into her curly hair, savoring the feeling of being this close to her.

“I-I’m so sorry Luke.”

He shushed her and kissed her temple. “I know, it’s okay.”

Lorelai pulled back slightly and looked him in the eye. “No. It’s not okay. I blamed you for something that you had nothing to do with.”

Luke cupped the side of her face and gently ran his thumb across her cheek wiping away a tear. Her eyes slipped shut and she nuzzled into the warmth of his palm before she began speaking again.

“I hate that I let myself say those things to you, I didn’t mean any of them, I was just so worried about Rory, and so mad at Jess, I didn’t know what to – I… “

Her ramble tapered off and came to an end as she realized just how close Luke was to her. Their lips were inches apart, and she could feel his warm breath puffing gently on her chin. Her heart started beating a million miles a minute. She knew what he was about to do, how close he was to kissing her, yet she couldn’t find enough will power to break herself away from the situation.

“Is this alright?” He mumbled against her mouth.

She didn’t even remember nodding, but the next thing she knew, his mouth was crashing into hers. She was mesmerized by the softness of his lips, the way they pressed against her own. The feeling of their bodies pressed against each other, and the realization of what they were actually doing provoked feelings that both hadn’t had in a long time. Bodies buzzing with lust; the excitement of a new relationship. Lorelai gasped when she felt Luke’s tongue briefly swept across her bottom lip, slipping inside her mouth as his hand rested against the back of her head deepening their kiss. She let raw emotion take over and followed her instincts, molding her body to the front of his.

Luke moaned as she ground her hips against his. Before he knew it, his hands were sliding down her back as he pinned her against the closest wall, taking advantage of the fact that one of her legs was wrapped around his thigh.

In reality, the kiss only lasted about a minute or two, but for both of them it seemed much longer. The intensity of their passion soon began to dwindle, and they slowly began to break apart with a series of small but loving kisses.

As their breathing slowed to a normal pace, Luke finally realized what he had done, and backed away from her as quickly as possible. “I am sorry Lorelai. I didn’t mean – I shouldn’t have done that.”

“Luke it’s fine. You didn’t do anything wrong.” She said.

“Yes I did! First, I completely screw up with Jess, and let down my sister. Then he screws up with Rory, which means that I let you down too.” Luke sighed deeply and leaned against the edge of the kitchen table, his eyes filling with tears. “I don’t know what I would have done if she had really been hurt. I wouldn’t have been able to live with myself.”

Lorelai watched as Luke brought his hand up to his face, embarrassed by the outburst of emotions that he was expressing. She walked slowly over to him, and took him into her arms, allowing him to let it all out.

“It’s gonna be okay, Luke.” She ran her fingers through his hair and rested her chin on his shoulder. “It’s gonna be okay.”

Later on that night, Lorelai lay in Luke’s bed on her side, watching him sleep across the room on the couch. She had held him for nearly two hours while he cried into the crook of her neck, and apologized over and over again to her. She knew that she was the only person that he would ever let down his guard with. The only person that he could confide in. Somewhere between sobs, she heard his confession. Something that the entire town already knew, but she had been too blind to see. She was the only person that he loved.
