Chapter 2

No way was James letting THAT man into his apartment. No chance in hell, not ever. He’d meet him downstairs in the lobby if he really had to. The lobby could be considered a public place, he’d be safe there, safe from HIM, and his own stupidity, but he wasn’t coming up here and on that matter James was certain.

So meeting him in the lobby was exactly what he was doing. The elevator doors swooshed open, giving him just enough time to step out before swooshing shut behind him. Although he’d stepped through the same elevator doors what must have been a thousand times or more since moving into this building, his nerves were more than a little jangled this morning and the movement made him start slightly.

He headed over to the large glass doors that prevented visitors from gaining unsolicited access to the residents, and also gave him one last layer of protection from the man on the other side. He took a deep breath but it did little to calm him. Just the though of seeing the other man again after everything that had happened, made him sick with fear. He didn't want to get hurt again. He toyed with the idea of getting back into the elevator and going back to his apartment, that would put the message across, but he couldn’t do it. Not when HE was just the other side of the door, not when, despite everything, he’s missed him so god damned much.

With shaky fingers, James punched his five digit security code into the keypad on the wall and the heavy glass doors slowly swung open. Another deep breath, which did even less to calm his racing pulse than the first, and he stepped forward.

“Franklin.” He whispered softly to himself as he neared the other man. He was sitting, uncomfortably on the edge of the couch, hunched forward over his knees and tapping his feet nervously. His head was bowed, scruffy dark curls hung loosely in front of his face and he was picking at his fingers.

For a moment, James just stared at him. It had been so long since they’d last seen each other but he still remembered everything about him. It hurt, and it scared the living hell out of him. Could he really do this? Would he really be able to look the other man in the eyes without falling apart? Honestly, he didn’t know, but he supposed there was only one way to find out. He took another couple of steps, thankful that the thick pile of the lobby carpet made the steps almost soundless, allowing him time to will his nerves away before he was noticed.

“Franklin.” He whispered again, slightly louder this time as his shadow suddenly engulfed the seated man, bringing him out of his uneasy stoop. He looked up, fixing James with an almost longing gaze and a dazzling smile and in that exact second, James's heart stopped beating.
