Chapter Two

“Alright, let me see it
again.” Nadine said in a bored tone.

“Yes ma’am.”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Sergeant Davis replied, sounding irritated.

The iris closed over the
de-activated Stargate before sliding open once again.

“It isn’t fast enough.”
She decided to herself.

She was brought out of her
revere by an SF. “Excuse me ma’am, but
you are late for the de-briefing with General Hammond.”

She glanced at her
watch. “Crap.” She murmured.style='mso-spacerun:yes'>
“We are not finished here.” She told style='font-family:Arial'>Davisstyle='font-family:Arial'> before standing and heading to the de-briefing room.

“Sorry Sir.” She said as
she entered the well lit room and sat near the rest of SG-1.

“Quite
alright.”
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> style='font-family:Arial'>Hammondstyle='font-family:Arial'> assured her.

text-autospace:none'>“Now, as I was saying, Ms.
Larkey here doesn’t seem to know who is in
charge.” Jack seethed.

She interrupted the
General before he could speak. “The only one here that seems confused is you, Colonel.

lasslass=MsoNormal style='mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;
text-autospace:none'>“Exactly, you disobeyed a
direct order from the superior officer.”

“Superior
in what manner exactly?
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Surely not experience.”

Experience?style='font-family:Arial'> Let me tell
you something about experience. I’ve
been doing this for longer than you’ve been alive.”

“So?style='mso-spacerun:yes'> It doesn’t make your skills superior to my
own. I may have only been an agent for 5
years, but in those 5 years I learned more than you could learn in ten
lifetimes.”

“Excuse me?style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I’ve been through more than you could possibly
imagine. You will never know the pain
and suffering I went through for my country.”

ne'>

I’ll never
know? No, Colonel, you’re the one
who will never know.”

style='mso-spacerun:yes'>

“Alright, that’s IT!”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> General Hammond intervened.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “I want to know what the hell is going on
here, right now.”

“She disobeyed direct
orders.” Jack told him.

“I did no such thing.”

“You kicked the class=SpellE>Unas in the head after I told you to leave it
ALONE!”

“I was defending myself.”

“Against
WHAT exactly?”

Hammondstyle='font-family:Arial'> intervened once more.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “STOP!style='mso-spacerun:yes'> That’s enough from the both of you.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> You are to follow the orders of the Colonel,
unless it is a situation in which we discussed that you would be put in charge
of. And Jack, read the files I gave you
before spouting your mouth off about your past.
De-briefing is over, I’ve got a headache.”

The rest of SG-1 had
simply sat in stunned silence the entire time.

***

Nadine sat at a table in
the commissary eating her food alone and in peace when a tray was placed on the
other side from herself.style='mso-spacerun:yes'>
Jack sat down across from her.

“I’m not a big
reader. So, I never read your files.” He
stated.

She simply stared at him.

“And, I still haven’t.”

She still said nothing.

“So maybe you could just
tell me what it says.”

She finally glanced down
at her food. “Nothing
interesting.”

class=SpellE>Hm, really?style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Try me.”
He took a bite of Jell-O.

She was silent once again.

“Don’t like talking about
the past huh?”

More silence, which he
took for a yes. “Neither do class=GramE>I
.”

They ate for awhile longer saying nothing.

“Look, I’m sorry about
earlier, okay? I didn’t mean to snap.”
He apologized

He sat watching her for
awhile.

“Are you pissed at me or
are you always like this?”

“Always.”style='font-family:Arial'>

“Right and why is that?”

“I like to be left alone.”

“Ah, right, the whole
agent thing. Keep a low profile.style='mso-spacerun:yes'>
Well, you don’t have to be like this here,
you know. We’re all one big happy
family.”

Saying nothing, she stood
and left Jack sitting alone.

***

“You know, that was Jack’s
way of trying to be friendly.” Daniel
ambushed Nadine in the corridor.

“Good for him.”

“We are all trying to make
the best of this. It isn’t easy to just
let someone new in. We’ve been together
for a long time.”

“I know, that is a
problem, isn’t it?”

She left Daniel standing
alone, confused.

~*~

“I recommend the immediate
separation of all SG teams and for all members to be reassigned to new
ones.”

text-autospace:none'>

“What?!”style='font-family:Arial'> Was the
general reaction from SG-1 sitting at the conference table with General Hammond
listening to Nadine.

“Having everyone getting
comfortable and friendly with team members is a risk.”

“Like hell it is.” class=GramE>Argued Jack.

“I would think it’s a
benefit.” Daniel interjected.

“You better have a damn
good argument to support your theory, Ms. Larkey.”style='mso-spacerun:yes'>
style='font-family:Arial'>Hammondstyle='font-family:Arial'> said.

“I do Sir, and it isn’t a
theory.” She stood and began walking
slowly around the large table. “Jack, if
a member of your team was captured, would you attempt to rescue them?”

“Damn right I would.”

“Daniel, let’s say O’Neill,
Carter, and Teal’c were captured after you all
received a vital piece of information to the survival of our planet.style='mso-spacerun:yes'>
You were not seen and have direct access to
the gate to get home. Woyou, you, honestly,
attempt to rescue your team-mates? Yes,
you have the means and probably could, but you’d be risking the fate of our
planet if you did. They’ll die if you
don’t. What do you do?”

“I try to rescue them.”

“Exactly.style='font-family:Arial'> And why?”

“Because they’re my
friends and I won’t leem dem die.”

“Because
they’re your friends.
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> If you didn’t know them, would you be more
inclined to just return home?”

text-autospace:none'>

“I prove my point.”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> She sat back in her chair.

“I fail to see how you’ve
proven anything.” Jack replied condescendinglyp>

“I see what class=GramE>your getting at Ms. Larkey.”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> style='font-family:Arial'>Hammondstyle='font-family:Arial'> said quickly, before she could retort to Jack.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “I’ll consider it, but for the time being the
SG teams stay as they are.”

“Thank you!”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Jack said to style='font-family:Arial'>Hammondstyle='font-family:Arial'> happily.

The General nodded, “Alright,
dismissed.”
