How it Began

************

Part 2

Almost a year later and none of them had ever brought up what happened late that night in his office. The kiss didn’t change anything between them. Jack had not needed to worry about that. Their work came first. They were both professionals and too good of friends to let it affect their jobs.

But Jack’s home life wasn’t what it used to be. His secrecy and sometimes long absences from the house took its toll on his marriage. His daughter seemed to take it fine but Teri was getting tired of the whole situation. He tried to explain but how could he really when he wasn’t allowed to reveal anything about his job? The job he loved but also hated as it seemed to suck up all his energy. When he needed to talk he talked to Nina instead. She understood everything and knew all too well that relationships were hard to maintain in their line of work. He sometimes wondered if she was seeing someone but he didn’t ask her and she never told him.

Another big case was laid upon his unit and he was forced to work, eat and sleep at his office… When he finally managed to get some time off and go home Teri had packed a bag for him. They talked for hours and it all ended in an agreement that he would move out – for good or only for awhile? They would have to wait and see…

Jack was angry. Teri knew what his job was like, that he couldn’t tell her what he was doing – what did she expect from him? He had always tried to keep his work separate from his family, thinking that he was protecting them. He didn’t want them to know about the things he had done…

A friend helped him get a small furnished apartment and he kept on working - the only thing he really knew how to do well. But he felt angry, frustrated and alone… Everyone at CTU noticed the change in him. His behaviour was discussed during coffee breaks, his co-workers complaining about his temper and how he seemed to care less about that they actually had lives outside the walls of the office.

Nina didn’t take part in the complaining – she didn’t mind the hard work but she hated the way he suddenly shut her out.

“Jack, what is wrong with you?”

He looked up in surprise. She had slammed the door to his office shut and she was standing in front of him with her arms crossed over her chest.

“I can’t deal with this bullshit anymore…” she continued, sounding angry and disappointed. “We are all working our asses of for you and then you miss something like this…”

She was referring to an incident the day before when he had almost let a suspect get away. Jack had completely misjudged the situation and if it hadn’t been for Nina another CTU-agent might have been hurt or even killed.

“You are sloppy and make mistakes you would normally never do, Jack… You risk your own life as well as the lives of your agents…” She paused as she saw him falling back into his chair, looking so tired, so… lost. “Jack, talk to me…” she demanded, but in a soft voice full of concern.

He sighed and leaned forward, elbows on his desk and his head in his hands. “I’m sorry… I should have told you… it’s personal… I just didn’t want it to come out but I guess I never should have tried to hide it… especially not from you…” He looked up. “Teri and I split up… She told me to move out three weeks ago…”

Nina looked at him a bit shocked. Here she had thought that Jack and his wife were doing fine. Problems at home… She should have guessed it though – Teri and Kim meant everything to Jack.

“I’m so sorry, Jack… Why…? I mean - is it definitely over or is it just temporary? Maybe you’re still able to patch things up?” She wanted to comfort him but she didn’t know what to tell him.

He sighed again. “It’s this… the job… and I don’t know if we can work it out…” He got up from his chair and walked around his desk. He sat down on the edge of the desk and looked at her. “I don’t know what to do…”

“You should have told me…”

He nodded. “Yeah, I’m sorry… Have I gotten you into trouble?”

She shook her head. “No, not yet…”

He gave her a weary smile. “Well, the day is young, right?”

She smiled back. “Is there anything I can do?”

He shook his head but in the back of his mind dirty thoughts were beginning to take form. So many weeks without being close, without touching…

Without sex…
