Part II

“I am finding that the time spent with you has been pleasing. It is a shame that we must limit our interactions to the short time we are both off duty.” Said Data, opening the door to his quarters.

It had been three days since the incident in the medical bay, and the ship, after more tests, was now running as efficiently as ever. Narak was given special recognition for her work on her fellow cadet who, thanks to the newly repaired medical equipment, was as good as new. She and Data had since then enjoyed nightly practice sessions, which ended in sweet kisses goodnight at her door. He wasn’t forcing her to do anything whatsoever, and their friendship kept every interaction interesting.

Spot ran up to Narak’s leg, and she greeted the cat with an affectionate pat on the head. “Well, it can’t be helped. We should just enjoy the time we have as much as we can.”

“Shall we pick up from where we left off yesterday?” He asked, taking a seat at the piano. “I believe it was here that you were having a problem.” He pointed to the final verse.

She nodded. “Sure.”

His fingers moving perfectly, the tune incredible, she felt her heart embrace the melody as she sang.

“Fill my heart with song,
and let me sing forever more.
You are all I long for, all I worship and adore.
In other words, please be true…
In other words, I love you.”

Data stopped playing once the song ended, but went back and played the last few bars. Narak, confused, sang them.

“In other words, please be true…
In other words, I love you.”

He repeated them again, and she followed.
“In other words, please be true…
In other words, I love you.”

He did the last bar one more time.

“In other words, I love you.”

Finally, he stopped. Narak sat next to him. “What’s the matter? Am I off key?”

“No. You are not. I am simply confused by the last line, and wish that there were something I could do to end it.”

“What do you mean?”

He turned towards her. “When I am with you, I feel different than in the presence of others. It feels pleasure, and I do not want to be without your company. Some have expressed this emotion as ‘love’, but I often find myself wondering if it is the true emotion, or simply my wanting of the emotion. If this is so, is my wanting it making it a true emotion?”

“Data, do you think your capable of love?”

“I remain inconclusive to that answer.”

She looked at his hands. They were perfectly shaped, with curved elegance as they lay on the keyboard. “Then why are you with me?”

“I… want to be capable of an emotion such as this. What of you?”

She sat closer to him, and leaned her head on his shoulder. “I’ve already told you how I feel, Data.”

“I do not recall.”
Narak smiled and sang. “In other words, I love you.”

“I thought that these were simply lyrics to the song you and I were to perform. I wasn’t aware that they represented your feelings towards me.”

“Now you are.”

He turned towards her and she leaned against his chest. The heat radiating from her body both intrigued and inspired him, so that he began to let his fingers trace the contours of her body, beginning from her ears and into her hair.

She wasn’t sure what he was doing, but let him do it all the same. His hands were gentle yet masculine, and the rough sensation of him pulling out the bands that held her pigtails in place was a mixture of pain and pleasure. He placed both bands on his desk and began running his fingers through her long dark wavy hair. She found this more comfortable as the time progressed.

He was beginning to enjoy the feeling of her hair in his hands, and wanted to explore more. His hands slid down to her neck, e the they delicately examined every inch of her skin with an air like touch. Data didn’t want his investigating to stop when her uniform got in the way, so he sought the zipper on her back. With one hand still on her neck, he slowly pulled it down.

Narak wasn’t the type of girl to let her date get carried away, but for the first time she didn’t feel like swatting his hand. He wasn’t moving out of horrible human lust, he was acting out of the feelings he didn’t know if he felt. She wondered if this was worse. The feeling passed when he began to peel her uniform off, going excruciatingly slow and almost making her want to do the job for him.

Her uniform pulled down to her waist, Narak had only a black bra to cover her upper half. Data moved his hands downwards, touching her skin lightly with his fingertips and making her shudder. Once he’d finished probing her back with his hands, he moved to the front. Her stomach muscles were tightened, possibly because she was tense. He felt the soft thin layer of fatty tissue on her belly, and moved upwards. Further regions were denied by her underclothes, but he couldn’t stand the feeling of denial. Pulling back his hands, he made short work of the hooks on her bra, and set it aside.

Slowly letting his hands wander from her back to her breasts, Data couldn’t deny the feeling of strange pleasure they gave him. She exhaled slowly as he delicately kneaded them, then lightly stroked her nipples until they grew firm in his grasp. Her increased breathing made him want to give her more. She gave him so much pleasure in the way she reacted to him, an responded to his words and actions. He slowly brought his hands down from her breasts and past her stomach, sliding them down further into her uniform.

Her initial reaction was brief. She breathed a little sigh, and leaned her head against his. Catching her ear in his mouth, he began caressing it with his tongue while his hands fondled the soft skin of her more private regions. Before he had the proper chance to respond, she whispered quietly, and moved her hand between his legs. “Data… please make love to me.”

“Is there any particular way you‘d like to engage in said activity?”

She smiled, loving how robotic his voice was, and the feeling of his mouth near her ear as he spoke without breath. “No. You decide.”

“Very well.”

Data picked up Narak by the waist, and set her into a standing position in front of him. He guided the rest of her uniform from her body, and bade her to step from it. In her underwear, she watched as he calmly removed his own uniform. For some reason or another, he wore nothing underneath. She was impressed by whomever created him, seeing that he was indeed a “fully functional” android. Still devoid of expression he approached her from behind, and slid her rather ordinary black underwear from her body.

With perfect rhyc moc movement that reminded her of a dancer, he picked her up into his arms and carried her to the bed in his quarters which he hardly ever used. Lying her nude body over the sheets, he found himself enthralled with her large black eyes. They seemed the blackest thing in the world, save outer space. He spoke a word, and the lights of his room turned off. With one hand on her breasts and the other supporting his weight, Data lowered himself over Narak’s body.

Wanting to lengthen the amount of pleasure he was giving her, Data let the tip of his firm member against the soft folds between Narak’s legs. Her breathing continued to become faster, and he finally decided to sate her body’s needs and plunged himself into her.

He thought, at first, that he’d done something wrong to hurt her. Upon initial impact, their union forced a painful sounding cry from the lips he’d enjoyed so much. However, when he began to move in sync with her body, his member sliding in and out of her smooth wet sex, he realized that he was doing well to give her pleasure. He leaned in closer to her, until their faces were close to one another. Even in the dark, she could see soft lines of starlight reflected from his expressionless face.

“Oh, Data…” She moaned quietly.

“This is… pleasing.” He said, not breaking his sentence fragments like a human would during those particular actions, but more because of his new impact of emotions. “I find myself becoming more fond of the union you and I share. I want to stay with you, and stay at peace. I want to keep this union forever, no matter what the cost.”

She held herself close to him. “Do you love me?”

With one last move, he pulled her into the short ecstasy of orgasm. Her body lay curled against his as he lowered himself next to her, finding their contact as pleasing as their prior activity. He spoke, as he always did, without expression. “Inconclusive.”

Dr. Crusher didn’t want to think about what happened to Narak in the night. She arrived for duty half an hour early, and began working before she was bade to. Her hair seemed slightly disheveled, but her gait was merry and friendly. Bev cleared her throat.

“Early for work, today?”

Narak smiled at her commanding officer. “Every day.”

“Well, I certainly hope you’ve had breakfast.” He said, going to her own tasks. “It seems like every time I see you, your either in Data’s arms or rushing off to your own quarters. Do you prefer eating alone? Or, with him?”

She shrugged. “I actually don’t like eating. It’s unnecessary with today‘s technology, and the use of vitamin supplements.”

“Narak, you are a medical officer. How can you say that?”

For a while, Beverly was suspicious as to why Narak’s personality had changed. At first, she’d suspected it was an influence on some part by Data. However when Troi told her about how Narak avoided the subject of eating, she realized something had been amiss. No wonder she’d lost so much weight so fast. She shrugged off the question, and resumed her work.

“You know, it’s been a while since we ran a routine checkup on the crew. Why don’t I perform one on you, first?”

Narak nodded, and sat on the table. Bev took out her instruments and began gradually going over her body. Presently, one of her pieces began emitting strange signals when located around her chest. “Is there something wrong, Dr. Crusher?”

“Strange readings… but probably nothing. I’ll examine them. Ould you go over the other cadets?”

“Yes ma’am.”

Examining her earlier readings, Dr. Crusher wasn’t enjoying the task one bit. The beeping noise she’d received was an early warning signal, which had detected a foreign entity on Narak’s body. The entity’s genetic code matched the one found on the Beratonian’s body. Since their encounter with the virus, Bev had worked hard to find a cure in case they ever encountered it again. The unfortunate truth was that one couldn’t be created.

“Crusher to Data.”

“Data to Medical Bay. Yes, Dr. Crusher?”

“May I see you? It‘s of some importance.”

“Yes ma’am. Data out.”

Although Bev was sure that she should tell Narak, something told her that she should let Data know first. Perhaps with his advanced knowledge he could help her create a cure, and they wouldn’t have to endure a tragedy.

The android’s presence made Bev shaky once again. “Dr. Crusher?”

“Data, come here please. Tell me what you see on the monitor?”

He knelt down to the doctor’s sitting position, and saw an extensive simulation of the disease they’d found that week. “This is the same disease found on the Beratonian.”

“Yes, that’s right. I’ve been working hard on a cure for it, but have so far come up with nothing useful. I was wondering if you could help me in my search.”

Data looked curious. “With all due respect, Doctor, I am unsure as to the relevancy of finding a cure for a disease that nobody is any longer in contact with, when there are other duties that must be performed upon the ship.”

“Actually, Data…” Bev said quietly. “Someone on board has been in contact with it. She is infected, and if a cure is not found, will be completely taken over by the entity.”

Data nodded. “Very well. I am sure that this is far more important than I had otherwise speculated, and will lend my help to finding said cure.”

Rehearsal went on as planned, that evening. Narak and Data spent half an hour practicing their music, and another twenty minutes involved in a deep passionate kiss. Data would have indulged further, had Narak not been so physically unresponsive as of late.

“Is there something wrong?”

She looked up at him, with a face that looked vaguely drowsy. “What? Wrong? Nothing, no. I probably just didn’t get enough sleep last night.”

“Your eyes do seem to be slightly bloodshot…” He said, looking at her. “But, I have never seen a sleep-deprived human with such a severe malady. Perhaps you should have them examined.”

She shook her head. “I’ve already had a check-up, today. Dr. Crusher didn’t say theas aas anything wrong with me.”

Data spend a moment processing the facts, then asked: “Did she examine anyone else?”

“No, I continued with a routine check-up for most of our staff while she remained doing research. Why?”

He stood and faced her. “I am afraid I must leave our rehearsal earlier than planned. I must speak to Dr. Crusher.”

“Well… do you want me to wait here?”

He processed for a moment, then added: “Yes. That would be ideal. Could you please feed Spot during my absence?”

“Yes.” She stood to see him out, and went to the replicator to generate food for Data’s cat. It didn’t worry him that he seemed to be in a rush, it worried her that he didn’t tell her why.

“Dr. Crusher, might I enquire as to whom aboard the ship is infected with the disease you and I are currently studying?” Asked Data upon reaching the medical bay.

Bev was surprised by the request. “Data, that information is classified. I can’t tell anyone, save my patient.”

“And have you informed your patient as to her illness?”

She shook her head. “No, I’m waiting for tightight time. I don’t want to frighten her, and besides, it isn’t so severe yet.”

“I would not be so certain of that.” He walked up to the computer. “May I?”

Bev nodded. “Certainly.”

Data began a complex series of typing patterns, after which the monitor began to display Narak’s evaluations. “As you can see, Cadet Narak has been your top student since her arrival. Lateley however, her performance has flawed.”

“Data, I told you I can’t tell you who the person is.”

“I am aware of that, Doctor. However, using deductive reasoning and physical examinations of another degree, I have confirmed that Narak is in fact infected.”

She nodded. “I see. And how do you feel about this? Are you worried? Concerned?”

“I… do feel a sense of responsibility. In terms of the fact that I must help you to find a cure, and notifying Narak of her condition.”

“I see, but what if a cure can not be found?”

“Cadet Narak would then perish due to the virus. The crew would respond with sadness, and I am certain that I would feel a sense of great loss for my companion.”

“Is that what she is? A companion?”

Data closed the program he’d been on. “Narak is a capable and responsible young woman with whom I’ve found to have a strangely close relationship with. Although she is organic, she acts, moves, and lives much like a synthetic being.”

“Data, are you saying you find her attractive?“

He processed the question for a moment. “Yes. My artificial intelligence has given me certain impulses which apparently cause me to become more comfortawhenwhen I am within her general viscinity.“

“Why Data, I do believe that you are in love.“

“I do not doubt that she harbors such affections for myself, as she has stated such on numerous occasions. I would like to return these affections, and am attempting to do so to the full extent of my ability.”

“And have you noticed how it is affecting her health?”

Data cocked his head sideways, curiously. “I do not understand what you mean. I was not aware of any further injury to her person besides the virus.”

“Then you haven’t realized that she’s been starving herself since she came aboard the Enterprise.” Dr. Crusher said, sadly. “It’s a terrible disease that can’t be cured by any means I can give, especially when she doesn’t seem to pay it any mind. Narak acts as if she were an android, and if you’ve noticed the physical differences between her appearance now and weeks before, she is beginning to look more and more like one.”

“I assure you, Dr. Crusher, that were Narak to behave and resemble a human to a higher degree, I would find her no less engaging.”

“I’m not the one you should be telling that to, Data. She is. But, that’s all you can tell her. As the ship’s Chief Medical Officer, it is my duty and mine alone to disclose certain information regarding my patients and their health.”

Data saluted her before leaving. “Yes ma’am.”
