Interlude Two: I Was Bought and Sold
We really thought we had a purpose
We were so anxious to achieve
We had hope
The world held promise
For a slave to liberty
Operations gazed out over the comm center, Michael at his side. "Mr. Birkoff seems to be adapting quite well."
"Yes. He's very good at his job."
"I meant that he's adapting well to life in Section proper. Despite his unique abilities, he's still a teenager. There was some concern that once he became responsible for himself, he might rebel, start breaking rules." He let the remark hang between them, waiting to see if Michael would take the opening it provided.
"Actually...he paid me a visit last week." Michael shifted almost imperceptibly, the only sign of his discomfort. "During his downtime."
Operations nodded. "I see. No doubt you failed to report this because it slipped your mind?"
Michael's lips quirked. "I assumed that you already knew."
"I see." Operations couldn't help smiling a bit at that. "In the future, you will report such infractions promptly. Understood?"
"Of course."
They watched the activities of those below them for a moment, then Operations cleared his throat. "You and Birkoff have an excellent working relationship. I would prefer that it remain that way."
Michael gave a brief nod. "I don't see why it shouldn't."
"Good." Operations turned away from the window. "That will be all, Michael."
