Chapter Eighteen
Phoenix felt something moving under him and his hair was blowing wildly as he squeezed the object in his hand. He opened his eyes to see Kal racing ahead of him on Blizzard. He blinked several times looking around to make sure that this was all indeed real and not just him dreaming of happier moments.
He pulled Thunder Hoof to a stop and shouted out Kal’s name. Kal spun around in his saddle to look back and brought Blizzard to a halt as Phoenix jumped off his horse.
Kal did the same and moved to see what was wrong only for Phoenix to throw himself in his arms and kiss him madly running his fingers through his dark hair. Phoenix pulled back and looked at him with tears in his eyes and held him close never ever to let go again. Kal just held him and asked, “Are you feeling ok?”
Phoenix smiled and squeezed him tighter, “Of course I’m ok,” he said keeping the magma from surfacing too soon, “I just had to kiss you.”
“Oh, ok, not that I mind or anything,” Kal said but curiosity got to him, “But that seemed too spontaneous even for you Phe,” he told him with that “gotcha” look on his face.
Phoenix really thought he should be crazy right now, so what the hell? He took Kal by the hand and patted it, “I just traveled back in time to keep you from dying,” and then quickly put a hand over his mouth, “Kill the Seer and erupt violently while raining down doom upon the doomed heads of the doomed High Council of Demons or whatever they call themselves now that I care nothing about.”
Kal blinked a few times and gently removed Phoenix’s hand from his mouth to touch his cheek, “Did Thunder Hoof rattle something loose in there,” he asked eyeing and poking various spots on his head.
Phoenix rolled his eyes and kissed him madly and then pulled back, “Any minute now Spider is going to come and tell us that my sister’s are in the castle as we speak.”
Kal smirked, “There is no way they can get inside the castle,” but quickly went silent when he saw a white blur racing right towards them through the green grass.
Spider stopped right in front of Phoenix knees and yipped. Phoenix just looked over at Kal, “See?”
Kal took Phoenix by the hand and he cried, “No!”
Kal stopped in his tracks and Phoenix put a hand up, “Each of them have a dagger coated with meteor rock,” he told Kal while tears spilled from his eyes at the memory, “And then the Seer appears in front of you and stabs you in the heart with a needle filed with liquid meteor rock.”
Kal did no know what to say or do but Phoenix went on, “I held you in my arms Kal,” he cried, “I watched death take you from me as your last breath rattled from your body.”
Kal looked at the castle and a slow anger was starting to rage like a wildfire, “They must all die.”
“No,” Phoenix said, “Leo is more than likely reading your journal on the computer right now and Paige is looking though our album which changes their opinion of you.”
“But,” Kal asked, “The Seer.”
“Was on her own,” he said, “She used them as a distraction to weaken you and then to flash in before any of us knew what was happening.”
“Kal,” Phoenix said, “Got to your snowy palace and stay there.”
Kal’s eyes went wide, “How did you,” and then he went silent, “Your teddy. You destroyed your teddy.”
Phoenix nodded sadly, “It was a great hiding place Kal,” he said, “Good thing I discovered it before I brought the roof down to kill me.”
Horror filled Kal’s eyes, “You wouldn’t,” he gasped shaking his head, “Not over me Phe.”
Phoenix laughed, “How could I not,” he asked, “You broke your promise and left me all alone.”
Kal held him tightly against his chest, “I am so sorry Phe.”
“It’s not your fault,” Phoenix told him softly, “But I’m going to hurt the one responsible.”
“It’s too dangerous to do it alone,” Kal said, “Let me help you.”
“No,” he shouted louder than he meant to, “I’ll not watch you die a second time.”
Kal turned his head to the side, “I don’t like the idea of you doing this alone.”
“Sometimes,” Phoenix said, “The best plan is not plan. Just erupt and watch the lava flow.”
Kal shook his head, “And hen I get to watch you die.”
Phoenix froze for a moment as Kal’s words came back to him, “I’ll destroy everything if something was to ever happen to you,” and there would be nothing to stop him from doing it to.
“I have to do this,” Phoenix said, “Or we will be hunted forever.”
Kal looked at Spider and the dog yipped and blurred off, “What did you do,” Phoenix asked only for a look of pain to cross Kal’s face. Phoenix pulled him to him and held him close as he looked around for the attacker only to see Spider with a glowing green rock in his mouth.
Phoenix looked at Kal as he took the rock in his shaking hand, “What the fuck are you doing?”
“This,” Kal said slitting his wrist and Phoenix cringed when he saw the blood spill across the golden wrist, “Drink this.”
Phoenix shook his head, “Stop it! You’re hurting yourself!”
“Drink,” he told Phoenix.
“Give me that fucking rock,” Phoenix shouted only for Kal to put his wrist to Phoenix’s lips making him drink. The taste of apples filled his mouth from so long ago as memories and visions flooded his mind when he was a vampire. He remembered how every cell in his body screamed to be fed the tasty blood and to hum after each were sated. Suddenly his eyes snapped open to look like twin pits of black fire.
Kal pulled his wrist away and Spider blurred out of sight with the rock and the wound healed instantly. Phoenix looked at him and Kal bent over to lick the blood from his lips, “What was the price Phe,” Kal asked, “Dad never does anything for free.”
Phoenix leaned in and rested his head against his neck breathing him in, “His blessing.”
Kal whispered, “Which would be?”
“To allow me to bare your children,” he said.
Kal took a deep breath, “You mean?”
“Yeah,” Phoenix laughed, “No more holes in the barn roof.”
Kal just looked at him, “After all these years.”
“We can finally be one,” Phoenix said smiling at him warmly.
“But babies,” Kal asked, “Are we ready for that?”
“I don’t know,” Phoenix said, “We can have your dad invent us some super condoms or something.”
Kal smiled and then turned serious, “Take Spider with you,” he said, “He will be my eyes.”
Spider yipped from next to them and Kal hugged Phoenix tight, “Come back to me Phe.”
Phoenix kissed him and smiled, “And miss exploring that huge ice palace of yours, are you crazy?”
“A little,” Kal told him, “My blood should really have juiced you up.”
Phoenix laughed, “Is this the part where I say that line from that stupid movie you made me sit through?”
“Which horrible movie,” Kal asked, “We only watch the best.”
“I’m jacked up on dark magic Kal,” Phoenix snorted.
“Oh,” he said, “That movie.”
Phoenix smiled and looked at the castle, “Go Kal,” he said kissing him again, “This won’t take long at all.”
Kal squeezed him tight and stepped back. He looked at the castle and said, “I love you.”
“I love you to,” Phoenix said and Kal vanished in a roar of flames.
Phoenix looked at the castle and then down at his friend, “Ready to play, maul the demons?”
Spider yipped and the both of them were gone in a blur of white and black silk.
-------------------------------------------------------
Phoenix heard Pipe say, “I don’t know what to do.”
He smiled and stepped into the room, “How about you listen for a change?”
“How the hell did you know we were here,” she asked.
“You could say,” he said smiling, “That I had the longest and greatest vision of all.”
Piper looked to Paige, “I’m confused.”
“Me to,” she said putting her dagger down on the table.
Phoenix looked at them, “I know you don’t want to Kill Kal,” he said, “Because he does love me. He loves me more than life itself.”
Piper just dropped her dagger, “We,” and was cut off by him, “I know Piper.”
“You do,” she asked
“Leo read the journal and Paige saw the album,” Phoenix told her matter of fact.
“Give us back our powers,” Paige said, “And we can all go home then.”
Phoenix smiled, “I will give you back your powers just as soon as I kill some demons that no longer need to exist.”
Leo and the sisters looked confused and then Piper said, “The Seer came to us.”
“You little red headed bitch,” the Seer shouted flashing in, “You ruined everything!”
Phoenix laughed and the Seer lifted a sword and Pipe screamed as she watched the Seer bring it down over his head for it to shatter to pieces. Phoenix cocked his head to the side, “Ouch,” he whined, “That hurt my head.”
She looked at him wrathfully and he smacked her across the face sending her flying across the room into the bookshelf falling to the floor. Before she could move he was standing over her, “You killed my Kal in the other time,” he said in a hollow voice, “I’m so going to enjoy killing you now.”
“What the fuck are you talking about,” the Seer screamed as he snapped her wrist making her scream, “You fucking bitch!”
Phoenix laughed as he snapped her ankle making her fall back to the floor screaming how cold and evil he was, “Thanks,” he beamed as he watched the pain wash across her face, “I get it from my husband.”
Piper and the others were too afraid to move when he held the Seer up off the floor by the throat, “Was this betrayal worth the pain you are in right now dear?”
She coughed and was completely broken, “Fucking bitch!”
Phoenix smiled as she cried out and exploded in flames. He dusted off his hands and looked at Spider, “Some help you were.”
He sniffed and growled at the other three before walking over and peeing on the Seer’s ashes.
Phoenix looked at his family, “Who wants to help their little brother vanquish some old farts in the Underworld?”
“What are you doing Phoenix,” Piper asked.
“Ensuring that Kal’s and my happy ever after is never fucked with again,” he told them, “Starting with that stupid book.”
He walked over and picked it up and held it under his arm, “Are you with me?”
“Give us back our power,” Piper said.
A white tear fell from his eyes and swirls of bright lights fluttered around the sisters. Piper through out her hands and a globe on the table exploded, as Paige orbed some candles to her hand.
“Cool,” Phoenix said looking at the shattered world, “My life was like that for a whole week that has not or never will happen now.”
“You can explain later,” Piper told him, “Let’s do this now.”
Phoenix nodded and all four of them vanished leaving Spider to trot out of the trot out of the room to blur off to the arctic wastes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kal was standing in front of the glowing crystals listening to his father go on and on about how entertaining Phoenix had been. He was really going on about how nice it was going to be to have babies zipping and zapping all over the fortress creating all kinds of delightful mishaps for him to enjoy cleaning up. Not to mention he was more than pleased to have his one and only son breathing again and looking fantastic as ever.
Now Kal remembered why he only visited the fortress ever one in a while. His dad’s A.I. was completely mad, but he would not have it any other way.
“When did we get a dog,” Jor-El asked, “I hope I’m not allergic.”
Kal looked over to see Spider looking around in wide blue eyed wonder and yipped. Kal was the one barking, “Why aren’t you with Phe?”
Spider yipped twice and Kal rolled his eyes, “Typical.”
Spider growled and Kal backed up, “Ok, ok, I didn’t mean it.”
He could have sworn the damn dog grinned. Phoenix really had spoiled him rotten.
Kal was about to flame out of there when Jor-El boomed, “Don’t even think about it Kal-El! Your mate told you to stay and stay you shall!”
“Mate,” Kal asked, “I prefer the term consort. Mate sounds so primitive.”
Jor-El growled, “You will remain here,” he said, “You really don’t want to be there when your “consort” goes off on the demons.”
“Really,” Kal asked.
“Did you ever study Pompeii,” Jor-El asked, “It’s a fascinating read.”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phoenix stood before the High Council of Demons who was looking down at him with a mixture of fear and disdain, for this was the Consort to the Lord of the Underworld and way scarier than the Queen had ever been during her short reign. Phoenix actually took great pride in that statement.
The High Councilman stood up, “What is your visit to us about?”
Phoenix held his head up regally as his eyes burned with red fire, “You dare speak to me in such a manner,” he asked, “Do I need to tell you to kill yourself here and now oh he who sits in a high chair thinking it protects him from my power?”
The High Councilman coughed, “Forgive my arrogance, Consort.”
“Better,” Phoenix snapped, “Although, some flattery would be nice.”
“Excuse me Oh Creamy Smooth One,” Pipe interrupted from the shadows, “But can we get on with it?”
She threw out her hands and the High Councilman exploded in flames and screams. Phoenix saw that the other council members begin to shimmer and shouted, “Stop!”
The council members who were now a mere six sat frozen in fear from not being able to move. Some were cursing him and Phoenix smiled, “Now, how to kill ya’ll?”
Piper coughed, “The book, Oh Shiny One.”
Phoenix snorted, “I really need to write those down.”
Paige quickly orbed the crystals around the demons and stepped away while Leo stood at the entrance to let them know if anyone was coming.
“Your arrogance astounds me,” Phoenix said to the council, “No guards?”
A council member tried to speak and Phoenix shouted, “Silence.”
The council member fell silent and Piper snorted, “If only I could just tell people to shut up and they obey instead of freezing them. It would be so subtle.”
Phoenix held out the dark book and spoke, “There will never be another Source. None shall rival my husband’s power.”
The book smoked and started to flame in his hands falling to ash at his feet. Glowing ruby eyes looked up at the frozen council members and none of them got the chance to cry out as they exploded. Phoenix looked around and then blasted the chamber to rubble, “Now that their out of the way,” he said turning to his sisters, “I have a promise to keep.”
“What promise,” Piper asked, “What the hell is going on?”
Paige looked just as confused, “Phe?”
Phoenix smiled, “I have to go to a cold place right now,” he said, “We’ll stop by later.”
“We,” Piper asked but he was gone in a roar of flames.
She looked at her sister and husband, “Would someone please tell me what His Pearly Luminescence meant by we?”
Paige just looked at her sister, “Pearly Luminescence?”
Piper took a deep breath, “We?”
Leo shook his head, “I’m sure he meant Kal and himself.”
“Oh,” Piper said and then screamed, “What?”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phoenix appeared in the ice palace for Kal to literally pounce on him. He laughed as Kal lifted him off his feet and swung him around full circle. Spider yipped and jumped happily from nex to them wagging his tail.
Kal kissed him hard, “I was so worried.”
“Why,” Phoenix asked.
“Dad was talking about Pompeii,” he told him, “and how you are like that volcano.”
Phoenix narrowed his eyes as Jor-El mocked, “Nice one son, ever so eloquent.”
“A volcano,” Phoenix asked, “You compared me to a volcano?”
Jor-El chuckled, “You simmer for a while in silence and then when everyone is least expecting it you tremble and explode.”
“I do not,” Phoenix roared and Kal took a step back and Phoenix smiled ever so sweetly, “Explode.”
“Right,” Jor-El drawled and Kal lifted a finger, “Dad, really?”
“What,” Jor-El asked, “I’m not allowed to have fun with your mate?”
“Consort,” Kal snapped, “He’s my Consort!”
If Jor-El had eyes he would have rolled them, “Whatever,” he said and made a glowing crystal float up out of the console, “Hold this crystal Phoenix Kent.”
Phoenix looked at Kal for some reassurance and got a smile, so he reached out and gripped the crystal in his hand. He was suddenly engulfed in a blinding blue light with weird symbols floating all around him. Stars and suns were being born and dying in front of his eyes. Black holes swirled in pools of fire as he felt his insides being torn apart by gentle yet precise hands.
He felt like he was about to scream when he opened his eyes to find himself in Kal’s lap on the ground with a gentle snow falling all around them. He looked at his stomach and saw that it looked the same and yet felt very different. He didn’t feel the cold he should be feeling right now.
Jor-El stated, “Your transformation in complete and my son’s blood actually eased your transition.”
“Transition,” Phoenix asked looking up at Kal.
Kal’s smile reached his blue eyes, “You’re part Kryptonian now.”
Phoenix blinked, “So we can?”
Kal smiled, “When you have fully recovered, yes we can have sex.”
Phoenix wrapped his arms around his neck and then realized, “I’m hungry.”
Kal snorted, “Where do you want to go?”
Phoenix pulled him into another hug, “My sisters.”
“Is that wise,” Kal asked, “They hate me with a passion.”
“No,” Phoenix said, “They don’t.”
Kal squeezed his hand, “Are you sure?”
“Of course,” Phoenix said, “But the whole underworld thing?”
“Actually,” Kal said, “I lost my source power when the book was destroyed.”
“What,” Phoenix asked.
“I’m still part demon,” Kal said, “All the cool powers and what not.”
“So,” Phoenix said, “We’re done playing Consort and King to a bunch of idiots?”
“Pretty much,” Kal snorted, “Dad just made these cool bracelets.”
He handed one to Phoenix, “It cloaks us from the demons by messing with their radar.”
Phoenix smiled and Jor-El said, “Which is why they shall never find this sanctuary.”
He kissed Kal and told Spider to get his leash which was already in his mouth, “Good boy.”
Spider yipped and Jor-El called after them, “Bring me back a present!”
------------------------------------------------------------------------
“So,” Piper said, “Let me get this straight. You’re saying that with the destruction of the dark book you lost all the power of the Source?”
“Pretty much,” Kal told her, “I’m still half demon and all but my biological father made this band to cloak me from the demons.”
He lifted up the band around his wrist to show her, “It messes with their radar.”
Paige sat her cup down, “I take it your father has been studying demons.”
“Ever since I showed him the form I got from growing up in the Underworld,” Kal told her.
Piper seemed to be taking this rather well Phoenix thought as she and Kal engaged in conversation. He was beyond the word happy because he had Kal back. His sisters believed the whole travel back through time thing. They had even done it themselves, multiple times actually. So that was nothing new to them.
Phoenix smiled at Paige who took his hand, “You have to give up your demonic powers.”
Phoenix laughed, “I don’t have any demonic powers.”
That stopped the conversation cold and Piper just looked at him, “What?”
“It’s true,” Phoenix said, “The powers I have came from Kal’s blood. They’re a part of who I am now.”
“But,” Paige said, “You can throw fire from your hands.”
“That’s a power Phoebe had when she was evil in a past life,” Piper said.
“I’m not evil though,” Phoenix said, “Fire is not an evil magic. It just depends on how you use it.”
Piper narrowed her eyes, “You will have to touch the book without cheating this time.”
Phoenix nodded and Kal took him by the hand as they followed the sisters up the stairs and into the attic. There the book was. Sitting on its platform with all its magic restored.
Piper motioned for him to touch it and he walked over to it and looked down at it. He reached out a hand and the book snapped open in a breeze which made him laugh. His hand touched the page and bright white light swirled from the page up his arm.
His red hair burned and all fell silent. He closed his eyes and orbed in blue lights to stand next to his sisters. They each smiled at him and Paige said, “Try and throw fire.”
He held out his hand and a blue flame covered his hand and was sparkling. He threw out his hand and burned up a pillow.
“Looks like Phoebe’s evil magic was cleansed,” Piper said with a happy tear in her eye.
Paige smiled, “The power of three is back again.”
Kal looked around feeling a little uncertain and shifted from one foot to the next only for Phoenix to pull him to him, “What’s wrong?”
“I feel out of place,” he said, “I’m a demon and an alien in a house of witches.”
Piper smiled, “You’ll get use to it,” she said, “After all didn’t the witches of old have demons for familiars?”
Kal laughed, “You would have to be a pretty powerful witch to control a demon.”
“Well,” Phoenix said snickering, “Good thing I’m beautiful and powerful.”
Paige giggled, “Wow, he definitely has Gram’s wit.”
“As he should,” Grams said swirling in along with Patty in white lights, “He is a Halliwell after all.”
Phoenix looked at the two of them uncertainly and Patty walked over to embrace him, “Welcome home sweetheart.”
He hugged her close, “I’m sorry.”
She patted his head, “It’s alright baby.”
Grams just looked Kal over with a critical eyes and finally whistled, “Damn, what I wouldn’t give to be alive and twenty again.”
Phoenix snorted and Kal just eyed her suspiciously, “I’m not drinking anything she offers me.”
Piper laughed, “Smart boy, you may survive this family yet.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Later that night Phoenix woke up next to Kal who had an arm draped over him protectively. He rubbed his hands over his stomach and smiled as he orbed over to stand in front of the chair and put on a robe orbing to the attic.
He stood in front of the book and it turned to the spell he wanted. He sat up candles in a circle and lit them with his magic, and recited the ancient words.
A soft wind blew through his ruby red hair and swirling lights filled the circle glittering softly as his mother and father stood there smiling at him.
“Are you really here,” he asked with tears beginning to sting his eyes.
Martha smiled warmly and stepped from the circle becoming caporal and took her baby in her arms, “Oh, my baby.”
Phoenix held her tightly and she still smelled of cinnamon from the apple pies she used to bake when he was little. She cooed and ran her fingers through his long silky hair.
Jonathan walked over and put a hand on his shoulder, “I see Clark has kept his promise.”
Phoenix looked at him, “What promise?”
“To protect and show that you are always loved,” Kal said from the doorway.
All of them turned to see him standing in his jeans smiling, “Wow, Phe,” he said, “Your mother is more beautiful in person.”
Martha smiled warmly, “Thank you Clark.”
Phoenix walked over and took Kal by the hand, “Mom, Dad, this is Kal-El of Krypton.”
The both of them just looked at each other and smiled back at them, “We know.”
“Oh,” Phoenix said and then asked, “How?”
“When your dead,” Martha said, “You can look in on your loved ones.”
“That’s how you knew when to come when I went crazy,” Phoenix said.
Martha nodded, “You needed your mother.”
“I did,” Phoenix said, “If you had not come I would have hurt a lot of people.”
Jonathan nodded, “It was the hardest thing to watch Phe.”
“But now,” Martha said, “You have a little life growing inside of you.”
Phoenix touched his tummy, “Really?”
Martha and Jonathan both smiled, “We have to go Phe.”
“Why,” Phoenix asked, “You just got here.”
Jonathan hugged him tight, “I love you son,” and Martha kissed him, “So much baby.”
Phoenix hugged them close and they smiled at Kal, “Take care of him or we’ll haunt you forever spaceman,” Martha said and smiled warmly at them as the two of them vanished in warm glowing lights.
“A baby,” Phoenix said, “I’m going to have a baby.”
Kal kissed him and whispered, “You’re my everything beloved.”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jor-El was so thrilled with the news that the entire fortress was glowing with a bright inner light. He was going through the baby name database like there was no tomorrow.
Kal just held Phoenix while they overlooked the vast frozen landscape from the top of a spire. Kal was nuzzling his neck as a gentle snow fell. Phoenix smiled and asked, “What do you think of Paley?”
Kal kissed his cheek, “Paley Halliwell or Paley Kent?”
“I’m thinking Paley Halliwell Kent,” Phoenix said, “After all, he’s going to be one little fireball.”
Kal smiled warmly and both of them rolled their eyes when Jor-El suddenly shouted, “Wait! I dunno how to be birthin’ no babies!”
Epilogue coming soon…
