Chapter 17
The twins were down for the night. Christy had sent Cody home shortly after they went to sleep. She knew that she had to talk to Paul and soon. Her head was telling her one thing but her heart was telling her something else. She was sitting on the back porch staring up at the sky fighting an internal battle with herself.
For once Jamie and Vinnie were not at Christy's. They felt Paulie needed them more. Paulie had kicked his date for the wedding out after she had told him that he was a bastard for not telling her about his kids. She was a friend with benefits nothing else. Vinnie stood in the kitchen watching his best friend sitting on the back porch. He didn't have to go out there to realize that Paulie was crying. It was just the way he held his shoulder's that gave it away. They had told him that they would stay the night, and they would not go back on their words. Paulie stood up and without even looking at Vinnie he walked back in the house and went straight to his new room and slammed the door.
"Vinnie. It is tearing them apart. What can we do?"
Vinnie smiled at her. "You stay here with Paulie. I am going to talk to Christy. She needs to know the truth."
Jamie's eyes went wide. "Vin. Honey. I.."
Vinnie kissed her gently. "Just keep an ear out for Jr. I'll be back soon. Love you."
"Love you too Vin."
Vinnie got in his car and drove over to Christy's. It was killing him to see both of them in so much pain. And it was worse that the twins wouldn't know their father. Christy without realizing the pain she inflicted today by the remark of Cody was more of a dad to them then Paulie, it destroyed him to hear those words. He got out of his car and walked to the back porch.
"Hey Vinnie."
Vinnie stepped around the house. "How you know it was me?"
Christy turned her tear stained face to him. "Your cologne, and I know your car motor."
Vinnie sat down. "Christy. What do you want?"
She looked at Vinnie. "I want a lot of things. More than anything I want our kids to know their father. I know what I said was uncalled for but I couldn't help it. I exploded." She took a deep breath. "And besides. He didn't even try. What was I supposed to think Vin?"
Vinnie took her in his arms for a hug. "Christy. I am going to tell you some things. And I don't want you to interrupt me until I am finished. It is time you got the story straight."
Christy nodded and agreed to hold her words. Vinnie then took another deep breath.
"Paulie wanted to see the kids but he couldn't bring himself to do it after the day of the delivery. Sr. gave him a good yelling at before we even went to the hospital. He never even asked Paulie if he wanted to come. No one asked Paulie about why he was there. You want to know the reason Chris. It is because he got threats from her over the kids. She swore she still had outside contacts and I know her cousin works at the hospital. She told Paulie over the phone that if he didn't come see her and still have a relationship, he would never see his kids and neither would you. Paulie did what any father would. The girl that was at the wedding. Yes he had been sleeping with her but she never knew about the kids. Paulie didn't know if she knew Whitney or not. She won't be back. She called him a bastard and he kicked her out. I know this is hurting Sr as well as Lucy. They never wanted you two to fight and tried to stay out of it but you are both miserable and lonely. Paulie worries about those kids as well as you. He never wanted to let you go. Christy you are both my friends. Why won't you let him try?"
Christy looked up to the sky again. "Because Vinnie. I love him. I mean really love him. I know I wasn't supposed to but I can't help it. Somewhere along the way of the pregnancy I fell for him. I am so scared of getting hurt."
Vinnie stood up. "Come on. Let's get the twins."
"What. Where are we going?"
Vinnie turned and smiled. "We are going home where you and the kids belong. To their father's."
Paulie turned later in the night thinking he was hearing a baby crying. He thought it was his imagination of hearing Paul crying earlier today in his arms. The more he came awake, the more he realized the crying was getting closer to his room. He stood up about the time the door opened.
"Paulie. You awake dude?"
"Yeah Vin. What's up?"
Vinnie walked into the room holding a now quiet Paul. "Here. He is your son. His mom is sleeping with Mary. Yes Paulie. She is here. And no I won't wake her. Just take your son and everything will be explained later. Here is his pacifier. Jamie just changed him so he should be good till daybreak. "
Paulie took his son and laid him on his chest. "Hey there little man. I didn't mean to upset your mommy today. I'm your daddy and I love you so much." He gently kissed his son's head and then went back to sleep with him nuzzled into his chest.
Christy woke up the next morning and looked over in the bed. Mary wasn't there and neither was her brother. She jumped out of bed and ran down the hall. In the kitchen she took a breath of relief. Jamie was sitting there watching Vinnie feed Mary an extra bottle of breast milk, she had pumped before coming over. Jamie looked up and noticed her sister looking around the room. "He is in there with his dad sleeping. Seems like Jr knows who his dad is and you were so tired from everything last night you never heard him crying. So Vinnie took him into Paulie's room and left him there for some bonding time. Which come look at this."
She led Christy down the hall and gently opened the door a hair. Christy looked into the crack and saw Paulie sleeping, holding their son tight on his chest. She felt the wall coming down and turned away from the door. They walked back into the kitchen to where Vinnie was now burping Mary. Christy sat down and bit her lip. "I was so stupid. Out of spite he missed the first three months of their life."
Vinnie met her eyes. "What are you going to do about that Christy?"
Paulie woke up to something wiggling under his arm and looked down. Jr looked up and met his eyes and started wiggling again. "Hey there little man. Did ya have a nice nap? Well then. Let's get dressed and see if we can find the rest of our lovely crew." He gently laid the baby down on the middle of the bed and quickly dressed, never taking his eyes off his son. Paul opened his mouth and let loose a wail that would have pleased even Sr. Paulie laughed and picked up his screaming son and walked out the door.
Christy looked up and turned on the stove as Paulie came in bouncing a still screaming son on his shoulder. She reach down and picked up a diaper and handed it to him. "Change him daddy. By the time you get done his breakfast will be ready."
Paulie returned five minutes later with a silent son in his arms smiling. "Sit down Paulie." Paulie did and Christy walked over with a bottle and gave it to him. "Feed him while I go shower." With that she walked out the door leaving Paulie looking down at the baby and then up at Jamie. She shook her head and showed him what to do. He said his thanks and then paid close attention to his son.
Soon the boys and Jamie left to go to work, leaving Christy alone in the house with the kids. She noticed they needed diapers and called the shop.
"Orange County Choppers."
"Hey Mikey. It's Chris. Is Paulie busy?"
Mikey looked down at the phone. "I'll check. Hang on." He placed her on hold and walked into the shop. "Paulie. Chris is on the phone for you."
Paulie nodded and walked over to the speaker phone.
"Hey Chris. What's up."
"Paulie. I hate to call at the shop but I just noticed that the kids need diapers. Umm. Can you pick them up some before you come home?"
"Sure Christy. What do I need to get?"
"Uh size one. Doesn't matter what brand. I usually use Pampers. But whatever you want to get is fine and I will pay you back."
"Sure thing. Should be home no later than eight. They have enough till then?"
"Yeah. Thank's Paulie."
"Yep. See you later."
Mikey cocked his eyebrow at his brother. "Not a word to Pop's. We are going to talk ok."
Mikey nodded and went back in the office.
At about eight thirty the three of them walked in the door with Paulie carrying the diapers. Immediately they smelled something good. Christy walked out and hugged Vinnie and Jamie and then kissed Paulie's cheek, taking the diapers from him. "Thanks. Dinner in on the table, kids are sleeping, and we have quiet."
After dinner Vinnie and Jamie went into their room and Paulie walked in to see Christy feeding Mary with Paul already sleeping. She looked up and smiled. "He usually eats first and goes straight to sleep. Mary takes a few more minutes."
Paulie sat down on the bed and stared down at his son sleeping. "Christy. Come home. I miss you. I love you. I don't want to miss anything else with the kids."
"Let me think Paulie ok? Don't pressure me please."
He nodded and laid down beside his son and went to sleep without thinking. Christy finished feeding Mary and smiled. As Mary dropped off she whispered. "Never again."
