Surgery
Chapter: 16
Sara opened her eyes. She felt numb all over but yet in such pain. She glanced around the room. She was in a hospital. The whiteness and smell unmistakable. Her eyes met Catherine’s watching over her.
“Hi,” Catherine said softly. Holding onto Sara’s hand.
Sara thought for a second getting her bearings…then…oh shit!
“Where is he?” She asked quickly, panic enveloping her. She tried to sit up but her back was agony.
Catherine put her arms across her to hold her still.
“Shh, stay still. It will only hurt more if you move."
Sara gritted her teeth. “Where is he?!”
“He’s still in surgery Sara.” Catherine answered with a heavy heart.
“How long have I been out?”
Catherine hesitated for a few seconds… "About 6 hours."
Sara gasped. “6 hours!” She shouted. “He’s been in surgery that long?!”
Catherine squeezed Sara’s hand tightly, swallowing hard. “There were…complications, his injury was severe. She punctured his lung. They are trying to stop the bleeding Sara. She got him really bad.”
Tears flooded down Sara's cheeks. Catherine leaned over and took her in her arms.
“He’ll pull through ok? After everything you’ve been through he wont give up now.”
Sara calmed after several minutes and looked back at Catherine.
“They hurt him Catherine, really hurt him. Oh god! His finger…and then they made him watch as….I…..I….oh god…then…fuck…she raped him!”
Catherine’s heart broke at Sara’s confession. “I’m so sorry Sara. Believe me, I really am, and they hurt you too…” She gestured to Sara’s back. She then saw the look on Sara’s face as she paled more than she was already.
“What honey? What is it?”
Sara hesitated for a second. “They…didn’t do that…” Her eyes again filled with tears.
Catherine looked shocked. “What?…..you mean……”
Sara cried again. “They made him. They made him whip me. It was either that or….or…,” she sobbed uncontrollably, she couldn’t continue. Catherine held her tightly. Shocked at what she’d just been told. My god what had they been through?
The door to Sara’s room opened. They both looked up to see a Doctor enter. Sara wiped away her tears, hoping for news of her beloved.
“Hi,” the doctor said. “I’m doctor Peters. How are you feeling Sara?”
Sara looked at Catherine. She really didn’t want to answer. She just had one question of her own.
“How’s Gil?” A pleading tone to her voice.
The doctor sighed a little. “He’s still in surgery.”
Sara was shocked. “Still! How can he still be in there?” she was frantic, wanted to get up, pace around, throw something, hit someone. Then she felt dizzy. Her monitors began to beep crazily. Her pain excruciating. She started having a panic attack. Her body began thrashing as Catherine did her best to hold her still. The doctor ran from the room to get assistance. Sara’s world once again became dark.
Sara’s room was quiet once again. Sara was sleeping after being sedated. Her heart rate had steadied and her monitor beeped naturally. Catherine was still watching over her. The room door opened and Doctor Peters poked his head in.
“Miss Willows” he whispered. “Can I have a word with you?”
“Sure,” she said standing. She squeezed Sara’s hand. “I wont be long honey,” she followed the Doctor out of the room.
Grissom had been in surgery for 8 hours now. She was praying it was good news.
“Gil has just been brought out of surgery.”
Catherine breathed a sigh of relief.
“How is he?”
Doctor Peters sighed. ”Not good I’m afraid, he is being transferred to the ICU. He will be under 24 hour supervision. His wound was severe and his lung was very badly severed. Currently he is unable to breath so he is on a ventilator. He’s also lost a lot of blood. A lot! The surgeons are not sure weather the bleeding will remain stilled or not. It could start again. We are just praying the stitches hold. The next 36 hours will be crucial to his survival.
“Do you know when he might regain consciousness?”
“Hard to say. Like I said, we will now more after 36 hours. We can’t risk any examinations on him until then. Any movement to his body could rupture the wound.”
Catherine prayed for her friend and looked back at Sara’s room.
“Would you like me to inform Miss Sidle?”
“Egh, no, it’s ok, I’ll tell her.”
“Sure thing,” he turned to walk away.
“Oh doctor..”
He span back around. “Yes?”
“I’m pretty sure Sara is going to want to see him when she wakes up. Will that be possible?”
The doctor nodded. “Let me get him settled and then I’ll send a nurse in a little while to get Sara. Ok?”
Catherine nodded. “Thank you.”
“No problem.”
Catherine headed back to Sara’s bedside.
