You're My Girl
"Zoe, honey, are you certain wearing the ring to school is a good idea?" Chris Hook looked worried. She was happy her daughter was engaged, happy that Zoe was excited about it, but not so sure about the other girls' reactions. She knew Zoe didn't get along with the other girls in her grade, even if the teasing had mostly stopped.
Zoe just nodded. "I don't stop loving him when I go to school, so why should I take the ring off?" Chris couldn't answer that, so she just hugged her daughter goodbye, and watched as she started walking towards the high school.
Inside, Zoe knew that she was asking for trouble. She didn't mind though. If any of those stuck-up, whiny cows gave her trouble, she'd sic Paul onto them. He'd been itching for a fight lately, Zoe knew, and he'd love to take his frustrations out on her enemies.
The reactions were not what she'd expected. Instead of the girls ignoring her or making derisive comments, they seemed genuinly excited. Amelia especially so.
"You're getting MARRIED?"
"Who is he?"
"Do we know him?"
"When's the wedding?"
Zoe was completely overwhelmed. Thankfully the bell for first period rang then, so she didn't have to answer any questions just yet. She was able to avoid scrutiny until lunch, when the other girls cornered her outside and started up again. Eventually Zoe relented and talked.
"His name's Anu D'Eath. A family friend... I don't think you'd know him."
Jenny squealed. "Where's he from? How old is he?"
Zoe thought quickly. "His family's from Egypt, but he's been in America a long time. He's... older than me."
Amelia nodded sagely. "Older guys are the best. They understand how we girls think better."
Zoe stifled a laugh. "Not... neccessarily. Anu can be a little dense at times." She gently stroked her ring, smiling at the memory of his rather unorthadox proposal.
Caitlin spoke up, in her drawling Alabaman voice. "What's he look like?"
Zoe gazed into the distance, thinking of how to describe him. Better leave out the anteater part, she decided. "well... he's a couple inches taller than me. Very pale skin, black hair, green eyes..."
"Sounds like you're marrying Harry Potter," Amelia said with a smile. Zoe pulled a face.
"No thanks. He's a whiny brat." She was actually enjoying this conversation. The others were interested in what she was saying, and not just as future cannon-fodder. It was nice to be a normal girl for a change.
"What's his taste in clothes?" Amelia asked, seemingly desperate for details.
Zoe thought again. "Well, he usually..." she trailed off, looking at the entrance to the school. Someone very familiar was walking past, apparently looking for one of the students. "See for yourself. That's him." She smiled at the girls, then walked over to the fence. "And what, may I ask, are you doing here?"
Anubis looked a little embarassed, and mumbled something. He couldn't meet her gaze, and Zoe fought to keep from laughing. She had a pretty good idea why he was here - he was lonely while she was at school, so he'd come to find her. She wanted to hear him say it though.
"I didn't quite catch that. You what?"
"I, uh... I missed you." He was still speaking barely above a whisper, and Zoe burst into laughter.
"You couldn't stay away from me for seven whole hours?" She choked out when she'd calmed a little. At Anubis' faint blush, and the shake of his head, she grinned evilly. "You like me, you like me..." she said in a sing-song voice.
Anubis pretended to glare at her, then gave up trying. "I can't help it. You're my girl." At that, Zoe melted. Every so often, Anubis would say something so sweet and innocent that she'd fall in love with him all over again. And he didn't even know that he was doing it.
"Yeah, I'm your girl."
"Always?"
"Always and forever."
The bell rang, startling the pair. Zoe remembered that she was at school, and shook her head. She couldn't wait for the day to be over.
"Love you," Anubis whispered to her.
"Love you too," Zoe whispered back, before grinning and raising her voice to the normal level. "Now sod off, I have to get to class."
Zoe just nodded. "I don't stop loving him when I go to school, so why should I take the ring off?" Chris couldn't answer that, so she just hugged her daughter goodbye, and watched as she started walking towards the high school.
