Chapter Fifteen
Phyre got up from his desk and began running from the room when he heard Phoenix’s screams. He ran down the hall and up the stairs to feel great power pulsing from the bedroom. He could hear Spider barking and Phoenix screaming, “No,” at the top of his lungs making the walls vibrate. He threw out his hand when he smelled smoke and the door swung open off its hinges.
Spider ran out of the room barking madly and stopped when he saw Phyre. He spun around on his claws and Phyre looked up to see Phoenix hovering a few inches off the bed as flames pulsed from him causing everything around him to burn.
Phoenix was clawing at his hair screaming with his black eyes open wide in horror. Phyre rushed into the room to feel the magic pulses hitting him, trying to drive him back. He called out to Phoenix only to have a rush of fire hit him again. He knew that if he didn’t get to him soon the entire castle could be in flames. He knew that stone didn’t burn but Phoenix being Phoenix would find a way to make it burn.
Phyre went into super speed mode and had Phoenix in his arms. The flames danced along his golden skin as he held his angel close. Phoenix gripped his arms with shining pearly white hands and cried, “You promised you would never leave me!”
Phyre gazed into those burning black pools and realized he must still be lost in his dreams as red flames danced around that beautiful face that shone like a full moon. Phyre shook him gently, “I’m right here Phe,” he said, “I haven’t left you.”
Phoenix narrowed his eyes and was about to scream again when Phyre suddenly kissed him. Tears spilled from the black pools and blinked into emerald orbs that Phyre loved so much.
A pale hand reached up to caress a golden cheek, “Kal?”
“I’m here beloved,” Phyre said soothingly brushing a hand through his vibrant red hair, “I’m here.”
Phoenix wrapped his arms around him tightly, “Just a dream,” he cried, “Oh thank god it was just a dream.”
Phyre lowered them down to the floor and waved his hand causing that flames to vanish. All the windows suddenly blew open so the smoke could escape. Phoenix was shaking, “Just a dream, just a dream.”
Phyre looked around the room and then down at the man in his arms, “Do you want to talk about it beloved?”
Phoenix shook his head, “No!”
“Phe,” Phyre soothed, “You destroyed our bedchamber.”
Phoenix blinked and looked around in fear, “I’m sorry.”
“Why do you look at me with fear,” Phyre asked with deep concern, “I am not mad Phe.”
“I know,” Phoenix said, “I could have hurt you.”
Spider whined and Phoenix looked at him, “And you baby.”
“We’re fine,” Phyre said looking himself and Spider over, “See?”
“It was so real,” Phoenix said wrapping his arms around himself, “The smell, the way it felt.”
“What happened Phe,” he asked again.
“I don’t want to talk about it,” Phoenix said softly.
“Phoenix,” Phyre said seeing the tears again, “Let me help you.”
Phoenix pulled him close and just let it out, “I woke up to find myself lying on your chest,” he said and started to shake, “I got up to find it and myself soaked in blood.”
Phyre squeezed him gently, “I saw your head turned to the side with your eyes unseeing, and, and,” he choked, “A green dagger in your heart. I tried to pull it out but the blood made my hand slippery and I finally got it out.”
He squeezed Phyre tightly because he was terrified he was going to be sucked back in, “You were so pale, and the smell, oh god the smell!”
Phyre kissed his head and whispered soothing words to him as she cried, “I held you in my arms begging you to wake up,” he said shaking his head, “But the blood just kept flowing until I was covered in it.”
Beautiful black wings sprouted from Phyre’s back and folded them around his angel. The sun hit them making them look like darkness and shadows spun into feathers. Phoenix trembled as the feathers tickled his naked back. He looked up into Phyre’s blue eyes, “I love you so much.”
Phyre smiled and bent his neck to kiss him full on the lips. His golden hands moved and caressed his cheeks and neck moving down the length of his body. Phoenix smiled softly and the tears slowly began to dry up. Phyre pulled back, “See, everything is fine.”
Phoenix rested his head against his chest, “I’m sorry about the room.”
Phyre chuckled, “It’s just one room Phe, we have twenty more.”
Spider whined and both looked down to see that Spider had Phoenix’s teddy in his jaws. Phyre gently let go of Phoenix who fell to his knees and Spider moved forward only to pulled into a warm embrace, “Thank you baby.”
Spider yipped and wagged his tail as Phoenix took the teddy in his arms, “Thank you Spider.”
The demon hound licked his salty cheeks and Phoenix looked up to see the photos of his parents were the only two things spared from his sleep. He got to his feet and looked over at Phyre, “I could have hurt you,” and then down at Spider, “Both of you.”
Phyre walked over and picked up his parents photos, “Indestructable, remember?”
Phoenix shook his head, “For the most part.”
“Plus,” Phyre said, “You would never willingly hurt me.”
“I would rather die,” Phoenix whispered, “Than hurt you in any way.”
“I know,” Phyre said taking him by the hand, “Because I would do the same.”
Phoenix smiled as Phyre led him from the fire damaged room with Spider hot on there heels. There was no way he was going to let his beloved charge out of his ever watchful sight.
Piper was standing in the attic looking out the window at the quite neighborhood. At one point her life had been as peaceful as this neighborhood was right now. Then came the day Phoebe got curious and unlocked the attic door causing her world to collide with destiny and explode into never ending chaos. She snorted causing a tear to slide from her eye which made her curse. She had thought the damn things would be dried up by now. Grief was a very close and personal friend of hers now, and her mouth was wanting for a burning splash of liquor.
She was wondering if she had enough time to drive to P3, get some booze, promptly driving back, get wasted, pass out, and die in her own puke. She laughed at herself for being stupid and looked back out the window, which made her rub her belly making her long for the little girl she had seen in the future. That was the moment she vowed never to touch the evil bottle again.
She closed her eyes and pictured that sweet smiling face looking up at her and she reached out to embrace her daughter when Paige came bursting into the room shattering her illusion of happiness. She spun around to see Paige breathing heavily, “What is it?”
Paige put up a finger to tell her to wait a minute so she could catch her breath, “You try,” she heaved, “Running up the stairs in heels.”
“Why didn’t you just orb,” Piper asked.
Paige narrowed her eyes, “Shut up, and come downstairs,” she said, “The Seer’s back.”
Piper turned serious, “Where’s Leo?”
“With her,” Paige said.
“I’ll be right down,” she said and Paige nodded orbing out.
Piper turned back to the window and looked at the street. She put her hand on the glass as if to embrace the peace and quite and whispered, “Someday I’ll have you back.”
She touched her tummy one more time smiling for the daughter she would someday have, and walked out of the room closing the door behind her.
Phoenix was sitting at the edge of the pool with his feet splashing in the water while Phyre was swimming some laps at super speed. Spider was curled up next to Phoenix just daring someone to get him wet. Phoenix scratched behind his ear making him scratch his side with a hind leg. He pecked Spider on the top of the head and slipped into the water.
Spider growled angrily when some water splashed his sleek snowy white coat. Phoenix giggled, “Poor baby, give us a hug.”
Spider jumped to his feet and growled making Phoenix laugh, “Ok, I’m sorry.”
Spider trotted away and jumped up on one of the lawn chairs curling up looking at him smugly. Phoenix narrowed his eyes in mock hurt, “You don’t love me anymore?”
Spider snorted and Phoenix smiled, “I knew you couldn’t stay mad long.”
He thought Spider was grinning when he realized he could no longer hear Phyre swimming. He turned around and got a face full of water and turned back to look at Spider who yipped and wagged his tail, “You little traitor.”
He spun around and sent a wave at Phyre who quickly ducked under the water to come up in front of his face, “Love you Phe.”
Phoenix smiled and gave him a face full of water. Phyre blinked, “That’s cheating.”
“Uh-huh,” he laughed, “So is attacking from behind.”
Phyre smiled and floated on his back, “What do you want to do today?”
“You’re free,” Phoenix asked, “No dumb demons for me to kill?”
Phyre sat up, “Phe?”
“I’m kidding,” he said waving a hand, “What do you want to do?”
“I dunno,” he said laughing, “That’s why I asked you.”
Phoenix watched Phyre jump up on a raft to lay on his back. He swam over and began to rub Phyre’s feet, “We could go horseback riding.”
Phyre thought a moment, “That sounds like fun, but,” he said, “After we get done with this great foot massage.”
Phoenix laughed, “As my emperor commands.”
He was suddenly in Phyre’s arms before he could blink. Phyre was rubbing his cheek next to his, “I would never command anything of you Phe.”
Phoenix snorted and bit back a comment like, “I would smack your face if you did,” because this was too adorable, this was too Kal. He wrapped his arms around his waist, “I know Kal.”
Phyre kissed his cheek, “Lets go ride some stallions.”
Phoenix smiled, “Ok,” but thought, “I would much rather be riding you, or vice versa.”
The Seer was sitting in the living room flipping through a Seventeen magazine when Pipe walked in. She quickly put the magazine down smiled, “Have you come to a decision?”
Piper nodded he head, “I think we have come to a decision we all agree on.”
“And that would be,” she asked.
“Yes,” Piper said, “We’ll do it.”
The Seer nodded, “The two of them will be out today which will give us time to figure out the best mode of attack in the castle.”
All three of them nodded and watched as the Seer produced three bracelets made out of blue stones, “This will cloak your presence as long as you have them on.”
Piper nodded and passed the other two to Paige and Leo. The Seer then pulled out three green blades. Piper looked at them, “Are those what I think they are?”
“Yes,” the Seer said, “These blades have been coated with the meteor rock.”
Paige frowned, “Seems kind of gruesome.”
“Yes,” the Seer said, “And their very presence will weaken him to the point of a helpless child.”
“What are we waiting for,” Piper asked, “Let’s go.”
The Seer watched as all three put the bands on and then they were all off and away in a flash and swirling blue lights.
Hissing black silk billowed around Phoenix while he raced on his black stallion in front of Phyre, “Catch me if you can,” he called.
Phyre laughed, “Don’t tempt me.”
“That’s funny,” Phoenix laughed, “The Tempted tempting the Tempter.”
“Wow,” Phyre said, “Try and say that three times fast.”
“You dork,” Phoenix said bringing Thunder Hoof to a gentle trot.
Phyre smiled, “But I’m your dork.”
“Yup,” Phoenix said looking over at Blizzard, “We have pretty horses.”
“Only the best magic can summon,” Phyre said, “You don’t think they have the names for the fun of it do you?”
Phoenix smiled, “Let me guess. Thunder Hoof here was born from the first clap of thunder and Blizzard was born in the first snow?”
Phyre nodded, “Something like that.”
“Cool,” Phoenix said.
“Now who’s the dork,” Phyre asked with a cocked eyebrow smiling.
Phoenix could not believe it. Phyre had gotten the best of him. He looked around for Jesus, “Hell must have frozen over.”
Phyre smiled, “Do you want it to,” he asked, “Cuz you just say the word.”
Phoenix laughed, “We can ice skate later.”
“Sure,” Phyre said, “I’ll even have the Seer bring those things you like to make snow cones you like so much.”
“Sweet,” Phoenix said and then shouted, “Race you to that tree,” and he was off like a blast of thunder.
The castle was empty except for a few demons who done the cleaning and the cooking, and were easily to avoid. The Seer led them into Phyre’s office where the Grimoure was kept.
She closed the door behind them and looked around, “This is his study.”
Piper nodded, “This looks big enough and has good places to hide.”
Paige looked around, “What’s up there?”
“Books and potion components,” the Seer said, “You’re more than welcome to look.”
Paige nodded and made her way up the steps to the floor above the study. Leo watched her go and saw the lap top on the desk, “He uses a lap top?”
The Seer shrugged, “We of the Underworld progress as humans do.”
“That’s nice,” Piper said, “When will they return?”
“Soon,” she said, “I will greet them and tell Phyre that he has urgent business in his office. As I see them approach the castle I will flash in and tell you to hide when he is most vulnerable we will attack.”
“Sounds good,” Piper said, “What of Phoenix?”
“The Seer nodded, “Once Phyre is dead the spell will be broken.”
Piper nodded and the Seer flashed out.
Paige was looking over the table when she found what looked to be a photo album just laying there. She picked it up and opened it to see pictures of Phoenix and Phyre. She flipped through it to see them laugh, kiss, smiling. Pictures with friends, school, dances, concerts, clubs. Phoenix looked so happy and Phyre was always close to him. She saw the look in their eyes. She knew that look, and it wasn’t magic that Phoenix was under. He truly loved Phyre with all his heart, and from what she could see from these photos so did Phyre.
Leo was on the computer and hacked into some files. He used Phoenix’s birth date. He found something that looked to be a journal. He read some entries and his brain exploded. He had no idea what to think. Did this demon truly love Phoenix? These entries were soul felt, filled with love, concern, light. All of them were about Phoenix and their relationship. The love he felt for Phe. How he would give Phe the world if he asked for it. Both he and Paige shouted out at the same time, “Piper!”
Piper looked up from a map layout of the castle to see Paige coming down the steps with a book and Leo waving her over to the computer. She walked over and Paige passed her the album while Leo read them some of the entries. Piper was really confused now. These photos and entries seemed so real, so full of truth. Could it be true? Did this demon truly love Phoenix with all his heart? Was Phoenix not under a spell?
“This,” she started, “Can’t be real.”
“I don’t know,” Paige said, “Looks real to me.”
“Sounds real to me,” Leo said.
“If we kill Phyre,” Paige said, “I think Phoenix will no nuclear.”
Leo nodded, “All that magic in him will seek out to kill something.”
Piper just stared at the photos of Phoenix and Phyre with a pretty blonde girl in between them, “This must be Chloe.”
She showed it to them, “I don’t know what to do.”
“How about you listen,” someone said and all three looked up from the desk to see Phoenix standing in front of the closed door, “For a change.”
“How the hell did you know we were here,” Piper asked.
Phoenix glared, “A little Spider told me.”
“But the armbands,” she asked.
“He smelled you,” Phoenix told them, “As for those bands, how did you get them?”
“It doesn’t matter,” Phyre said as he flamed in, “They broke contract.”
“Wait,” Leo yelled, “I read your journal entries.”
Phyre’s eyes widened, “How the hell?”
“It was easy,” Piper said, “Really, Phoenix’s birthday.”
Phyre formed a fireball and was about to throw it when he paled, “What the?”
Piper brought out the glowing green blade and Phoenix froze as images from his nightmare came back to him. He threw himself in front of Phyre screaming, “If you so much as take a take a step forward I will blow you and the rest of the mansion in that direction!”
She froze, “I’m not going to hurt your boyfriend.”
“What,” Phoenix asked, “I’m not falling for your tricks.”
Phyre weakly grabbed Phoenix and pulled him behind him, “Leave him alone.”
Piper put her knife down, “That proves it.”
“What,” Phyre asked.
“You do love him,” Piper said.
“Of course I love him,” Phyre yelled, “I would die for him!”
The Seer flashed in front of him, “And die for him you shall my lord,” and plunged a needle filled with liquid meteor rock into his heart and injected it.
