Sara sat with her hands folded across her little swell of a belly. She tried to drum up the courage to tell Amy about her experiences in Foster Care. She would tell her the barest minimum. She was too young to know the whole truth.
“Amy. I went into foster care when I was a little older than you.”
“Why did you go there? What happened?”
“My mom did something bad to my father and she was sent away.”
“What did she do?”
“She killed him.”
“Oh.”
“How long were you in foster care?”
“Until I was eighteen.”
“Wow.”
“How long were you there?” Sara asked.
“Mom went crazy a few years ago. Right after dad died. About two or so years, I guess.”
“Oh. What happened to him?”
“Cancer.” Amy said softly.
“I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay. I got over it. I had to.”
“You should’ve had time to grieve.”
“Did you have time to grieve?”
“Not really. It caused me pain.”
“Me too. I didn’t really open up to people.”
“I guess you get that from me.”
Amy smiled. “I guess so.”
“Were both stubborn Sidles.”
“But I’m not a Sidle.” Amy added.
“We could change that if you want to.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“That would be great. I don’t feel right being a Pierce and not being with them.”
“I’ll get Grissom to look into adopting you.”
“Really?”
“Yes. Of course.”
