Chapter 16
“Sara, please be patient with him.”
Sara was sitting across from the thinner younger Grissom. He’d asked her to meet him at the diner. She had done so not for herself but for her baby.
“I have been patient with him, Matthew. He has turned me down for dates, well a date. Do you know how long we have known one another?”
Matthew shook his head.
“A decade. I have known Gil Grissom for a decade. You think I am hot now, you should have seen me at twenty three.” Sara stabbed a french fry.
Matthew laughed softly. He liked Sara. He reminded her of Sofia, spunky and smart but not so strong that she couldn’t love a flawed brilliant man. She wasn’t a conventional beauty, but she was stunning none the less.
“He says that you walked into his office, and he couldn’t breath.”
Sara grinned. “He said that? We went to dinner at least a twice a week the whole time he was in Boston.”
“He never tried anything?”
Sara shook her head again. “There was this girl…Danielle Dubois. She was from New Orleans, all sugar and legs and blond hair. You know that Southern thing that can’t be taught. She did everything but come to class naked. To this day I don’t think he noticed.”
Sara sipped her soda and regarded her new friend. “When did you know that Sofia was the one?”
Matthew’s face filled with excitement. “Our first date.”
“Tell me.”
“She laughed at something I said and tossed her hair away from her face.”
“That’s it.”
“I bet if you ask people who really love one another and it all comes down to one moment, one something. The other stuff has to be there too, the attraction, the like minds, but there has be something that says to you if I don’t see her toss her hair and laugh everyday for the rest of my life, I will no longer exist. When did you know Gil was the one?”
Sara smiled. “I walked into his office, and he looked at me, and took off his glasses and chewed on one end. He looked at me like he wanted drink me. He said very professorially of course. ‘Miss Siddle, is it?’ I was done. It was over”
“Sara you can’t give up on that kind of love. The love won’t let you. Our dad did a lot of damage. Our mothers tried to take up the slack, but it was still tough.”
“You don’t seem to have a problem with commitment.”
“Different people respond to stimuli differently. I don’t have such a hard time with relationships, but it’s not a coincidence that we are both driven workaholics always trying to proven something.” Matthew stopped and started again. “I have also had therapy.”
“Gil wouldn’t do that.”
“He’d do it if you asked him, and I backed you up.”
“I don’t know what you think this power is that I have over him. He likes having sex with me. He likes owning and controlling part of me, but I am not sure he wants me.”
Sara sighed thinking of her baby. She had to try. She had to try and understand Gil no matter how hard it was.
“What was your father like?”
“Imagine me or Gil with no morals and fewer ethics.”
“That sounds dangerous.”
Matthew’s eyes danced around the restaurant nervously. “Exactly.”
“Where is he?”
“Who knows, somewhere in Asia, stealing and lying, or in the States stealing. Gil and I are doing the best with the hand that we were dealt. “
Sara thought of her own childhood.
“What am I supposed to do, Matthew?” She really wanted to know.
“Don’t let him push you away. I know he’s been acting nuts lately. Just stand your ground, and don’t put up with his bullshit. He’ll calm down when he sees that you aren’t going anywhere. You aren’t going anywhere are you, Sara?”
“I only want to be with him, Matty.”
“I guess I don’t have a choice.” She hadn’t told anyone. She was tired and lonely, and this was her baby’s uncle. What the hell! “I am going to have his baby.”
In her mind that is how she thought of the baby, Grissom’s son, Grissom’s daughter, Grissom’s baby. It was a gift he had given her, and she loved him more than she ever had. The love she had for him was bordering on pain.
“What…?”
Sara nodded dumbly and tried to blink back tears. Matthew reached across the table and took her hand.
“Are you okay? When are you going to tell, Gil?”
Sara shrugged. “I don’t know. Every time I try to tell him, we end up making love.”
Matthew laughed softly. “That’s what got you two in trouble in the first place. How are you feeling?”
“Scared, excited, scared.”
Matthew leaned in conspiratorially. “We think So is pregnant too.”
Sara smiled sniffling a little. “How do you feel?”
“Scare, excited, scared.”
The waitress poured water into their empty glasses. “Can I have a piece of the apple pie and a hot fudge sundae please?”
The red head eyes Sara’s now clean plate. “Where is a little thing like you putting all that food?”
She walked away with little shake of her head.
“Do you think he’ll be mad?”
“I don’t think Gil is capable of getting angry with you, Sunshine.”
“Sara, please be patient with him.”
