"The Never Ending Call"
"I can get it from here," Johnny sighed, as he walked in his front door of his apartment, relieved to be home and dreading it at the same time. The people at the Embassy was kind and arranged a private flight back to LA and a car to take them home, Johnny's being the first stop. Roy had walked him to his door, but he knew Roy needed to get going and he didn't have the strength for goodbyes. He was tired from the lack of sleep due to a nightmare, and worn sick as he felt his heart crush a little bit more the closer they got to LA.
"I'm sure you can," Roy said casually, as he led Johnny into his apartment, carrying what little they had with them from their time in Mexico, and closing the door behind him, having sent the car on its way. "Are you hungry," Roy asked as he placed their bags down on the sofa.
Johnny looked at him as if he were nuts. "What are you doing," Johnny demanded.
"Getting us something to eat if you're hungry," Roy replied, not understanding Johnny as of late. He was withdrawn, but not as much as before, and he seemed to shrink from contact as of this morning. Last night they snuggled in bed, both too tired for more.
"What about Joann," Johnny asked, not understanding Roy's behavior.
"I'll call her tomorrow and let her know I'm back along with the guys. Then while they're visiting, I'll go see her…I don't think it's a good idea for you to be alone right now, Junior," he replied seeing if there was anything in the fridge or if it would be take out, they still had a bit of cash on them.
"I don't need a baby-sitter," Johnny snarled. "I also don’t need you dragging this out anymore," he added with hurt and anger.
Roy turned to face his love with concern, and puzzlement, "Johnny, what's going on," he asked, wondering what was at the root of this outburst. He crossed over and reached for his lover, but Johnny pulled away.
"Just leave, Roy. Get in the car and go home and get this over with. It never happened okay," Johnny replied growling, but the tears of hurt filled his eyes.
Roy looked at Johnny trying to understand what was going on, and saw the hurt and fear in his lover's eyes. //Johnny must still think that this is temporary…// "I'm not leaving," he declared firmly. "I told you I loved you, John Gage and that it would be you and me all the way, I haven't changed my mind."
"But…Joann," Johnny asked, his heart pulled thin with fear and hope.
"Is a good person and really doesn't deserve what is going to happen, but its going to happen, Johnny. I love 'you' and I'm not leaving you," he stated again, this time moving quickly and gathering his lover in his arm and held him closely. "You're my everything, Junior, can't you see that," he whispered and kissed his love tenderly and then held him some more.
Johnny broke down some more; his heart relieved to hear that Roy was staying with him and hurt for the pain he was going to be apart of, but he needed Roy and knew he didn't have the strength to walk away. He knew he should, but he couldn't, Roy was his everything too. After a long moment, Johnny looked at his lover, "Now what?"
Roy smiled lovingly, "we order some food if you’re hungry," he teased as he led his lover to the sofa and sat down, pulling Johnny on his lap and cradled him. "Then tomorrow we try to work things out. ‘I'll' deal with Joann; you just…don't worry about it. We decided to face the music together, right?"
"Right," Johnny nodded and sighed. "I'm sorry, Roy. I just feel so…out of sorts."
"It's okay, Junior, you've been to hell and you made it back, give yourself a few days. Which reminds me," Roy said softly but seriously. "I think it would be a good idea of we sought some counseling," he suggested, feeling that Johnny would bolt…more, if it was suggested it just being him; but he realized though he might not be 'feeling' any effects at the moment from what happened it was still there.
"Whatever for, it's over," Johnny protested.
"Because it was pretty traumatic, because it'll be required by the department before returning along with a physical. The Doc at the embassy and the shots they gave us might not be enough…because it would make me feel better to know you were okay all around."
"You're not playing fair," Johnny whined, knowing he'd do as Roy suggested.
"Junior, when it comes to you being h, sa, safe and well, I'll get as dirty as I need too," he smiled, but the vow was clear in his eyes.
Johnny snuggled deeper then leaned in and kissed Roy softly, tenderly. "I do love you Roy," he breathed, and then a yawn snuck in.
"How about Chinese; we can curl up wherever you wish, eat, and then get some sleep. I doubt either of us will last long. Do you have a menu or something?"
Johnny forced himself up and walked to his desk in the corner and sighed, "Mike," he muttered softly seeing his stuff out of order. He looked in a drawer and brought it over to Roy. "Order what you like, all is good with me, and I'll see how my bedroom is fairing. He entered his bedroom and shook his head; Mike had made the bed for him. //You're such a good friend, Mike,// he thought as he turned down the coverlet and arranged the TV he had in here to be at the angle he liked, and then went to change into something comfortable. //Wonder if you’ll stay a friend,// he then thought as it occurred to him, people were not dumb, they'd figure it out. He sighed, //you made this decision already, no point in rehashing it,// he scolded himself.
"I ordered two number sixes, one number twelve along with double rice and extra fortune cookies. You might want to make some coffee, as there is not much else in the fridge."
"I was going to go shopping after shift…never got to it," Johnny smiled softly. "Why don't you take a shower and I'll take care of it."
Roy walked up and gave his lover another hug. He could tell Johnny was not up to making love, but if he needed the touch and comfort; he'd have it. "Okay. I'm glad I bought some stuff that fits before we left," he smiled.
"I'm just glad it’s over," Johnny commented as he left the bedroom to go make the coffee.
"Me too, Junior," Roy whispered and headed into the bathroom.
********
Roy was worried for his lover, as Johnny was having nightmares, and had just had another one; mainly the same thing. About trying to save those women and calling out for someone to stop or he'd kill them. Then he'd sob asking for forgiveness; he was torn and it showed.
Roy laid there caressing Johnny's damp locks from his forehead, soothing him back to sleep, and held him close so he felt safe. Johnny also woke up at the slightest noise, jumpy and fearful that someone was outside. Johnny didn't say that he feared it being the others after him again, but Roy knew. Roy was thankful to the 'anonymous' package that arrived at the embassy, offering information on the other men and their whereabouts. There was a good chance they were already arrested; Agent Keller and Williams promised to keep them posted.
Once more Johnny snapped awake, "Did you hear that?"
"It was the wind, babe," Roy whispered, and shifted to hug Johnny closer. "I'm here, love, I'll keep watch okay," he promised and placed soft tender kisses on Johnny's forehead and temple. "I'll keep you safe," he vowed. He was pleased to see Johnny snuggle close to him and close his eyes once more. Roy would stay awake a little more, and then fell asleep too, though very aware of his lover. Tonight he would keep him safe and tomorrow he'd help plan their new life together, for he wasn't going to let Johnny be alone. He didn't know how Jo would react or the department, not that he would tell them why he moved in with Johnny right after he got back from Mexico, but they were not stupid men, they'd figure out eventually. He'd have to figure away to keep a roof over their heads, not that Johnny wouldn't be contributing, he just wanted to take care of his love…forever.
*********
Roy was nervous, not only for being here at his...Joann's house, but he was not too happy at the idea of not being with Johnny while he was so vulnerable, though he trusted Mike to look out for him, since he also knew he couldn't postpone this any longer. He had called Mike and asked him to come over and not say anything to anyone, and he knew he could count on his soft spoken co-worker to do just that. Mike had arrived and Roy gave a 'brief' rundown on what happened and that he needed to take care of some things and then he'd be back. He knew Mike was puzzled why he would be coming back and why he was there in the first place and not at his own… home, but that would have to wait for later.
Since Mike had arranged their vehicles to be returned from the station, Roy borrowed Johnny's Rover and headed over; it was noon and the kids would be in school. He didn't know how Joann was going to take the news, especially after all she's been through, but Johnny was in no condition to go it alone. He seemed okay at times, tired, but other times he simply wanted to withdraw like this morning. He'd have to see about a counselor later today…and a lawyer. He had a friend that he met in the army through his lover before he was killed; *Brandon Chaney. He was now a high-priced lawyer in Beverly Hills and perhaps he might give Roy a discount or point him to a good one; he was going to need it.
Taking a deep breath and bracing himself, he rang the doorbell as he didn't have his keys, they had been left in his locker at the station so had been given back to Joann. He could hear her footsteps…the door opening…
Joann DeSoto was a small petit woman, and it appeared that she had been doing dishes by the slightly damp apron and her drying her hands on a towel. As she looked up her dark green eyes went wide with shocking surprise. "ROY," she shouted with joy and relief and hugged the stuffing out of him.
Roy was glad to see her; she was the mother of their children and had been a good wife and friend over the years. She did deserve better and he hoped she'd find it. He hugged her and moved them inside and closed the door. He turned his head so Joann's kisses landed only on his cheek or chin. "Its good to see you too," he smiled, a bit hesitant, but Jo wasn't paying any attention as she was overjoyed and still hugging the stuffing out of him.
Joan settled for a moment, her face all aglow, "Did you just get back, they wouldn't tell me when or where so I couldn't meet you," she bubbled.
Roy sighed, "No, I got in last night..."
Joann's smile faded just a touch, "Last night? Why didn't you come home then, is everything alright?" For it didn't make sense that her husband would not come straight home.
"Jo, can we go sit down," he asked, gently moving from her embrace and made his way into the living room.
"Roy, what's wrong," Jo asked, now really concerned. "Are you in some kind of trouble? The FBI said you were fully cleared of any connection with the robbery…"
Roy snorted, "That was generous of them. Um…no, Jo, it doesn't have to do with them. I…I need to talk to you about something and…you're not going to like it," he stated flatly sitting on the arm of the sofa, a habit he had for years, especially when he was about to deliver bad news.
Joann paled a bit as she could see it was serious as she took a seat. "Okay, Roy, I'm listening."
Now that the moment was here he felt lost as to what he was going to say. He had 'planned' several things, but they all went the way of the wind now that he was here in front of his wife. He sighed, then blew out a puff of air, he was nervous.
"Roy, you're scaring me here," Jo stated, for she could see Roy delaying and the more he did it, the worse the news had to be, for she could always read him like a book at times.
"Jo, there is no easy way to tell you this. I also know the timing sucks, but…I'm leaving you," he blurted out.
Jo blinked at Roy a moment or two than chuckled, "I'm sorry; I thought you said you were…leaving me?"
"I did, Jo. I…I can't keep living this lie anymore. It's not fair to you or me…"
"Lie? What do you mean lie," she asked, her eyes growing dark with anger and confusion.
"Jo…" he looked away, not wanting to hurt her, but there was no way around this. He faced her and figured blurting it out was the only way. "I’m gay."
Joann leaped to her feet, stunned, shocked and in disbelief, "Gay? What the hell do you mean you're gay? We have two beautiful children…I…" she was beside herself with emotion.
Roy wiped his face with his left hand. "It means, Jo, that had I not knocked you up, I would have not married you. It means that after you there would 'never' have been another woman in my life. It means I prefer to be with men…"
Roy didn't duck in time to avoid the slap to his face, "you’re a fucking pervert," she shouted in anger and disbelief. Then backed off, pacing in front of her sofa.
Roy was more shocked at hearing his wife curse than slap him. "Jo…"
"No, no," she growled. She then faced him, "you are my husband, Roy DeSoto and I don't know what happened down there, but we'll get it fixed," she announced as if it were as easy as seeing a doctor and getting a shot.
Roy stood up and glared at her, "Jo, this is not something you take a couple of pills for and your good as new. This is who I am…have been. I'm tired of living a lie and I want to be with the man I love…" oops, that had been a serious mistake by the death glare that now filled his wife's eyes.
She stared at Roy, her eyes growing darker by the minute as she processed what he said and what she knew of her husband, "That fucking little whore," she snarled in a low threatening tone. "He did something to you, didn't he? That filthy slut took advantage of you while you were down there…"
It took him a moment to realize that Joann was talking about Johnny and that was not acceptable, "Shut your damn mouth," he snarled back. "You don't know a damn thing about what we went through down there. Johnny is no slut or whore and don't let me catch you talking about him that way again," he threatened. "And yes, he's the one I'm leaving you for. I love him, Jo. I always have; this…event, only showed to me that I can't live without him anymore. I deserve to be happy…"
"Oh, and what the hell do I deserve," she snarled back.
"You deserve someone who will love you for you…with 'all' they are. Face it Jo, our marriage is built on nothing but familiarity. We married because of Chris, not love. We stayed together because it seemed like the right thing to do. I'm sorry this hurts you, but I can't keep doing this, not when I have a chance to be happy, truly happy. What I feel for Johnny I could never feel for you…don't you get it?"
"You sorry ass mother fucker," she snarled. Roy knew it was not only Chris that had been hearing the language from some of the guys in the neighborhood now. "We've all been worried sick about you and what have you been doing, screwing that fag! Is he that damn good that you can't wait to get back in his bed your dumping your family not even one day after getting home?"
"I love my kids, Jo, don't mistake that. I just don't love you!" he knew two seconds after he said it that it was not completely true and the wrong thing to say. Anger was never conducive to his mouth and he tried hard not to ang angry, but that was not going to happen here. "I do care about you…" he tried to amend.
"Get the fuck out," she whispered, as tears rolled down her face.
"I will, after I get a few things," he muttered and started to the stairs, but she intercepted slapping the shit out of him; he blocked most of the blows, though a lot connected, before he grabbed her wrists. "STOP IT," he roared, giving her a good shake, then let her go. "This doesn't have to go this way…"
"Oh and how the hell did you expect me to take it? Gee, Roy, it's okay that you leave me alone with two kids to raise and a mortgage while you go off and fuck your…WHORE!"
Roy clenched his jaw and stormed upstairs, trying to calm down. He had never struck a woman in his life, he would not now…but she was making it very difficult to remember that at present. He stormed into the bedroom and went to the closet he knew where his suitcase and a duffle bag were and started packing…the quick way, to hell with folding.
Joann had followed Roy up to give him more piece of her mind when the phone ran. Out of habit, she answered it. "Hello," she said as calmly as she could manage. "Just a second, Mike…" she barely got the words out when Roy grabbed the phone in the upstairs bedroom from her.
"What's the matter," he asked, knowing that Mike wouldn't call unless there was a problem. "Is he okay? Alright, I'll be there shortly, just keep an eye on him," Roy instructed and hung up.
"I'm telling you now, Roy DeSoto, you leave this house and it will be the last time…do you hear me. That'll include Jenny and Chris," she vowed.
Roy glared at her, "That's your decision and I'll fight it. This can go as easy or as hard you – 'you' want it. I plan on being fair, Jo, but I won't let you walk all over me either," he told her firmly as he continued to gather what he needed most. He then grabbed his duffle and suitcase and went to the den where he took care of a lot of bills and other business. He riffled through his desk and found what he needed and his telephone directory. He looked and saw that Jo didn't follow him and picked up the phone…she wasn't on it. He dialed Brandon's number. "Brandon Chaney please. Roy DeSoto," he stated to the person on the other side of the phone.
"Brandon, Roy…yes, good to hear from you too." Roy looked again and still didn't see Jo, "Brandon, I need your help…yes as a lawyer. It's complicated. Can we meet…yes, today would be great. Let me give you an address…that is if you don't mind. Thanks, Brandon," he sighed with some relief and gave him Johnny's address. "I'll see you later and again, thanks."
Roy then hung up and grabbed up a few pictures of Chris and Jenny and a few other things that he might want before heading out to the living room. He spotted Joann and noticed she had gathered some more of his stuff in a garbage bag, and was moving to the front door where she then tossed it out like trash, and since the bag was not closed, a lot of his stuff went sprawling over the front lawn. "Thanks," he sneered.
"Get out, you bastard," she fumed.
Roy did exit the house and jumped at the sound of the door slamming. He gathered his things from the grass and put them in the back of the Rover. "Well, that could have gone better," he sighed and hopped in; he had to hurry back, it seemed Johnny was in trouble and needed him.
