Chapter 15 -- Mental Health

“So, Spencer’s problem’s mental? I suspected it might be that.“ Lassiter said, and once more everyone scowled at him, and he threw up his hands. “0h, come on. The man died more than once. Something had to have happened to him. Let’s face it, you can only live a charmed life for so long before, statistically, something bad happens. It’s just the way life is, and sugar coating it isn’t going to do anyone any kind of good, and that includes Spencer . . .” He snorted. “Especially Spencer. Life sucks sometimes,” his voice dropped, and he turned away. “And no matter how you may want things to be different, they just aren’t. That’s just the way it is. And sue me for being a realist.”

For a moment, silence reigned in the room, and Henry sighed, stood, and paced the room. “So, that‘s what you are saying?” He finally said as he turned back to the doctor. “You’re saying my son’s mental?”

“At this point, Mr. Spencer, there’s no evidence to prove otherwise,” the doctor answered, and Henry ran a hand over his face.

“So, what do we do about it?” He asked, his voice resigned, and the doctor smiled gently.

“Well, at this exact moment, the best we can do is watch him so that he doesn’t hurt himself, and see how much longer these hallucinations last. If they persist past the time he should be in the hospital on a regular floor, which at the rate he’s healing physically, will be in about three days, I really think you should consider putting him on the Behavioral Science Unit.”

“Behavioral Science Unit?” Henry looked at the doctor with a deep frown. “What the hell is that? Sounds like you’re turning him into some kind of damned experiment.”

“It’s the psychiatric ward,” Gus’ voice was low and pained. “I . . . I’ve done a lot of sales to several doctors there. It . . .it’s actually not a bad place . . .as that type of place goes.”
