Chapter Fourteen
Clark and Ronan walked along the wall of roses to where the fountain was gently spewing water out of a fish’s mouth. The both of them looked down to see that different colors of goldfish were swimming around in the clear water.
Ronan took a seat on the edge and ran a pale hand across the surface of the water to make the fish dart about like different color gems in the pale light of the moon overhead. Clark took several steps back just too look at him in awe. Ronan looked so haunting just sitting there all pale and beautiful gazing into the watery surface of the pool.
“What are you doing,” Ronan asked as he slowly turned his gaze to look at him.
“Looking at how beautiful you are just sitting there,” Clark said as he walked up to him to take a seat beside him, “It reminds me of those times.”
“Those times,” Ronan whispered as he leaned back into Clark so he could hold him, “How we would run through those enchanted woods with only the faery lights to guide our way.”
Clark closed his eyes and he could see it as clear as the crystalline moonlight on the surface of deep water. A hint of pale skin flashed in that direction, a light chuckle coming from another as he chased Ronan through that magical realm.
“Do you remember that sacred circle where we first made love, Leif,” Ronan asked hesitantly.
“I do,” Clark said as he sniffed his neck and pulled him closer into his embrace, “Among the oak, ash, birch, and yew.”
A crystal clear red tear fell from the corner of an aqua orb, “The shadows of those trees held us in their sheltering arms.”
Ronan turned around to look into his eyes, “It was the first time anyone had ever made me feel like I was worth anything.”
“You’re not just worth anything,” Clark said and gently placed a kiss on the pale cheek not stained with blood, “You’re worth everything Ronan.”
“Why did you love me,” Ronan asked with their noses practically touching, “Why did you risk everything to be with me?”
“I already answered your question,” Clark said as he poked their noses together making Ronan laugh, “You’re worth everything.”

“Lana, move your fat head,” Chloe hissed as she tried to peak from the bush, “I can’t see what’s happening.”
“Nothing your virgin eyes need to see,” Lana said getting a great view of the lip on lip action that was going on.
“You two know this is so wrong,” Pete said with a shameful expression crossing his mouth.
“Then why the fuck are you the one videotaping it then,” Chloe asked in outrage even though she was fighting not to laugh at the face Pete was making.
“Would you two shut up,” Lana hissed, “You’re going to fuck everything up and then we won’t get to see the good stuff.”
“Well if Miss Fat Head would move her fat head so I could see,” Chloe mouthed, “Then maybe I would shut up then.”
Lana’s head snapped in her direction and Pete was like, “Wow, would you check that out.”
“What,” Lana and Chloe asked at the same time only to curse when they bumped their heads together.
“Never mind, you missed it,” Pete said smiling at them, “But don’t worry, we can always play it back.”
Chloe growled and finally found a place where she could see and Lana was biting her thumbnail wanting some action to go down. Pete was snickering and said in a silly voice, “Zoom in.”

“Didn’t you say that Lex had a labyrinth Clark,” Ronan asked as he sent the rainbow gems in the water swimming for their lives.
“Yeah,” Clark said pointing in the direction to where it lay, “Why?”
“We don’t have an enchanted forest here,” Ronan whispered, “So let’s use the next best thing.”
Distant thunder could be heard and Clark looked up at the sky to see violet heat lightning dance overhead. He looked back down into Ronan’s shining orbs and smiled, “I bet I can catch you before you find the center,” Clark whispered warmly into his ear, “It goes on forever.”
“Forever is a long time Clark,” Ronan smiled at him as he got to his feet, “I would love to spend forever with you chasing me.”

“Aw,” Chloe whined, “Where the hell are they going now?”
“It looks like they’re heading for that labyrinth,” Pete said with a grin, “Perhaps they’re gonna do the dirty.”
Lana smacked his arm, “I bet they heard us,” she hissed, “And now they’re trying to make their escape.”
“Should we follow them,” Chloe asked as lightning danced over their heads.
“You bet your lily white ass we’re following them,” Pete said and all three started to slowly make their way after the two lovers who were indeed heading for the huge labyrinth that Lex has constructed on a hundred acre field.
“What if we get lost,” Lana asked.
“That’s why we’re going to tie this around our waists,” Chloe said holding up a long piece of rope that was just conveniently lying on the ground.
“Perfect,” Lana said.

Ronan was shocked to see that Clark had not been kidding when he said that the labyrinth was indeed huge. The bushed walls had to be at least fifteen feet high or ever higher than that. When Lex Luthor wanted something he got it the way he wanted. This was no where near as big as the labyrinths found in his realm but this was indeed huge from a mortal point of view.
Ronan took a step inside and turned to smile at Clark, “Follow my voice Clark,” he said in a sing song tone and took off with a silvery laugh.
Clark shook his head, “He always did love to cheat.”

Twin pools of shining black fire opened in a dark smile, “Dluth.”
Vines and the bushes suddenly shivered and the entrance was sealed completely shut.
“That should keep out the little interlopers,” the Dark Queen mused from within her shell.
She stepped out of the shadows and a small opening formed for her and she walked through for the opening to seal itself up instantly.

“Where the hell is the opening,” Lana asked looking around, “Are we even on the right side?”
“I don’t know,” Chloe said looking around her self, “I have never even been back here in this before.”
“Damn,” Pete said as he shook the camera, “I guess it’s for the best.”
“Why the fuck is that,” Lana hissed angrily.
“The cameras battery is dead,” he said looking up at them from the device.
“I don’t fucking believe this,” Lana fumed and pulled Chloe after her by the arm, “There must be a way in.”
“Pete,” Chloe shouted to him, “Bring me the ax!”
“Yes Mommy,” Pete laughed and followed after them.

“Over here Clark,” Ronan called in musical laughter only to vanish like mist before Clark could even get close to grabbing him.
Ronan waved his arms around in sacred dance and faery lights began to appear above the ground to light the way through the labyrinth. He smiled when he heard an owl hoot into the moon filled night.
He smiled and vanished from Clark once more and called out to him, “Follow my song Clark.”
When in the springtime of the year
When the trees are crowned with leaves
When the ash and oak, and the birch and yew
Are dressed in ribbons fair
Clark caught sight of garnet hair streaming in the moonlight and reached out only for it to vanish into the night. Faery lights were dancing all around him to the beat of Ronan’s voice.
“Come,” Ronan called on a warm jasmine scented breeze that tickled Clark in hidden places as an owl hooted high from some dark place.
When owls call the breathless moon
In the blue veil of the night
The shadows of the trees appear
Amidst the faery lights
They’ve been rambling all the night
And some times of this day
Now returning back again
They bring a garland gay
A warm wind blew all around Clark as the violet lightning danced over head as if to the tune of the magic song. Ronan’s voice was light and lush, much different than his usual deep tone. He saw a shadow and leaped for it only for it to be from a tree. Soft laughter filled the air like silver bells. This was going to be harder than he thought it would be.
Who will go down to those shady groves?
And summon the shadows there
And tie a ribbon on those sheltering arms
In the springtime of the year
Ronan raced along like a god of the night through the labyrinth turning here and there leading Clark on. He would make the shadows play all around him from the trees and bushes to play tricks on his love as birds sung from their nests. He would twist and twirl as the faery lights danced around his frame as his song took flight.
The songs of birds seem to fill the maze
That when the fiddler plays
All their voices can be heard
Long past their woodland days
They’ve been rambling all the night
And some times of this day
Now returning back again
They bring a garland gay
Clark followed that haunting voice that filled the night sky and used his super hearing to pin point an exact location and smiled as he raced on after that illusive voice. The faery lights danced along the trail that he followed as he caught sight of that garnet hair and a pale flash of moonlit skin.
Ronan looked behind him and twirled around lighter than air to see Clark behind him. He smiled and blew an enchanting kiss at him only to vanish into the playful shadows leading Clark on as the old days played through his mind of the worshippers in the woods.
And so they linked their hands and danced
Round in circles and in rows
And so the journey of the night descends
When all the shades are gone
The shadows vanished in magical dance and Ronan was twirling about as he raced on ahead of Clark. Faery lights seemed to glow brighter and brighter as Clark began to catch up to him. He was using his super speed and Ronan just laughed and raced on the wings of night with long garnet hair spilling out like flame.
A garland gay they bring us here
And at our door they stand
It is a sprout well budded out
The work of the Lady’s hand
Clark raced into the center of the maze to find Ronan seated on the fountain in the center with a mermaid holding out two conk shells with water spewing from them in pearly luminescence. That glowing face turned to look at him and raced up to him with ruby red lips smiling brightly.
He took Clark by the hands and they linked to form the symbol of eternity and the two begun to spin around causing the faery lights and leaves to swirl around them like a miniature twister.
And so we link our hands and dance
Round in circles and in rows
And so our journey into life begins
When all the darkness is gone
They’ve been rambling all the night
And some time of this day
Now returning back again
They bring a garland gay
Ronan moved closer to Clark and placed a garland around his neck that he had spun together as he raced along the labyrinth. It contained all the flowers that he had found along the way here. Clark knew what it was that Ronan was doing and he made no move to object whatsoever.
We’ve been rambling all the night
And some time of this day
Now returning back again
I bring you a garland gay
Those glowing red lips met Clark’s and his eyes closed as the two of them were lifted off the green earth from the magic they had raised. They spun around softly in the dance of faery lights and the loose leaves from the ground that were swept up in their wake.
Clark wrapped his arms around Ronan and the kiss deepened and their feet touched the earth once more sending out a pulse of power when they came into contact with it. Ronan softly pulled away and smiled into Clark’s glowing face that was filled with an amber light.
Clark looked at his hands and then back up at Ronan smiling as bright as the sun. Ronan let out a laugh of happiness and threw his arms around Clark’s neck and the two of them spun around.
“How very dare you,” an icy voice hissed from the dark shadows making them freeze in their tracks, “How very dare you?”
“Lex,” Clark asked and a cruel laugh echoed all around them.
“No,” The Dark Queen answered as the shadows parted to reveal her to them, “Just Mother.”
“What are you talking about Lex,” Clark asked stepping in front of Ronan to hide his other worldly appearance from him even thought I might be too late to do any damage control.
“Clark,” Ronan said and grabbed his arm in a steel grip, “Look at his eyes.”
Clark looked at him to see that his eyes were as black as the darkness around them only they seemed to shine brilliantly. Clark backed away with Ronan behind him doing the same. He knew who this was, and he was scared.
“Why are you backing away,” The Dark Goddess asked, “Aren’t you suppose to be Superman or something…oh dear, I’ve gone and revealed the future.”
She began to smack her left hand with her right, “Bad Macha,” she said with scornful laughter, “You’ve gone too far this time.”
“Mother,” Ronan whispered and the fear was evident in his voice.
She cocked her head to the side to look at him. Clark really was scared shitless right now but just seeing Lex being all possessed by an evil Goddess in that getup was really helping him fight the fear back. He looked ridiculous standing there looking all high and mighty with those spooky black eyes.
“What am I going to do with you,” she asked herself in a sing song voice that hinted of something very unpleasant, “For going behind my back and running away to bind yourself to this golden twit for all eternity.”
“You could go home,” Ronan suggested, “And let me live happily ever after?”
“You know what,” she said as lightning hissed overhead like a red hot dragon’s tongue, “I’m going to skin you alive and wear you both as a shroud.”
Clark put his arm in front of Ronan, “Get out of Lex’s body you coward and fight me fair.”
“Oh Please,” the Goddess scoffed looking at her nails that surpassed even her expectation’s, “I could snap you like a twig.”
Ronan knew that his Mom would never kill him and this was a good thing. He stepped out from behind Clark and looked into his Mother’s burning eyes, “We’re bound forever as you said Mother,” he said, “If you kill him you kill me as well.”
The Dark Goddess took in a hissing breath that reminded Ronan of a mighty dragon about to let loose a great plume of fire that would devour everything in its path. Luckily for the both of them she could not do that while only being in possession of a mortal body. Now, if she was here in person that would be an entirely different story.
She might only be in possession of a mortal body but that did not mean she could not rush the both of them and beat them bloody. She was going to take her son home even if it meant knocking him unconscious or dragging him kicking and screaming back half alive. She didn’t care.
She was about to rush the both of them and have herself a jolly gay bash when the sound of silver bells went off around them. Queen Macha took in a deep breath and screamed up at the night sky, “He is my son!”
“Who is she screaming at,” Clark asked.
Ronan shook his head, “I don’t have a clue.”
“I don’t care what you say,” she shouted stabbing her fingers at the sky making the lightning hiss and crackle as if in pain, “He is a part of me forever!”
“Mother,” Ronan asked in a small voice only for her to rush forward faster than the speed of darkness to lift him off the ground by the throat.
Clark moved to stop her only for her to smack him across the side of the face and sent him spiraling through the air to crash into the fountain, “There’s your first flying lesson Superman,” she hissed dangerously, “Although you might want to work on that landing of yours.”
She turned back to her son and brought him close to her face so that her burning eyes scorched themselves into his memory forever, “You are my son,” she said in that tone that reminded him of who was forever in charge, “You are my Beautiful Death.”
His glowing pale hands morphed into claws as he fought to get out of her iron grip that would never release him willingly, “But you have a bitch higher than me on your side for the time being.”
“Who,” Ronan choked out only for her to tighten he grip even thought it wouldn’t kill him.
“Me,” a silvery voice announced and it looked as though the moon itself had stepped down out of the heavens, “The Mother”
“Me,” Macha mocked in a high pitched voice, “The Mother.”
“Am I going to have to banish you from this place,” Danu asked.
Macha narrowed her eyes, “I will pay you back for this.”
“I’m sure you will try,” Danu said snapping her silver fingers and Ronan fell to the ground.
Macha hissed angrily, “You would leave me?”
“If you had loved me,” Ronan said slowly getting to his feet for fear of being stuck down or worse, “If you had allowed me to love I would be home right now with Leif and you living happily.”
Her dark eyes widened and then narrowed into slits, “The only reason why you still stand before me is because she is holding me back.”
“Are you done blowing all that frigid air,” Danu asked pretending to look at the watch she didn’t have on, “I do have other things to get on with you know?”
“I’m staying with Clark,” Ronan said looking at his Mother with tears in his eyes, “If only you had loved me.”
“I do love you,” she screamed and the earth under them trembled a little, “You are my son!”
“Even after all these hundreds of thousands of years,” Danu said with a shake of her silver mane, “You still don’t get it, do you?”
“Stay out of this you son stealer,” Macha snapped making Danu roll her eyes, “Just you wait.”
“I’ve been waiting,” Danu said flicking silver trails of moon beams behind a pointy ear.
“Not you,” Macha bellowed making the lightning strike the mermaids head and showed Clark lying where he had struck the edge of the fountain, and Ronan ran to him to see that he was only unconscious with a purple bruise on his golden cheek.
“Ronan,” Danu said strolling gracefully over to him, “You have bound yourself to this young man for all eternity…this means you can never return home until he dies.”
“Good,” Ronan said looking over at his seething mother who had shadows hissing and snapping all around her dark form, “He is not of this earth and does not age as the mortals do.”
“This is true,” Macha said with indifference, “But he will die…eventually…and when he does my dear…you’re mine.”
“As long as the yellow sun still burns in the blue sky of day Mother,” Ronan hissed, “Clark will live.”
“Even suns die my son,” she whispered colder than the grave in which to remind him, “Even if it takes billions of years…they all come to me in the end.”
“Well now that that’s settled,” Danu said happily, “Let’s go Macha.”
“Not yet,” she snapped still looking at her son, “Remember this…I do love you my Beautiful Death,” she said, “But when Superman here dies…I am so going to pun…”
Lex fell to the ground unconscious and Danu looked at Ronan with a smile, “I can only take so much,” and she was gone just like that.
Ronan looked down at Clark and smiled as he softly brushed his hair gently out of his face for Clark’s eyes to flutter open and smile up at him, “Hi.”
“Hi,” Ronan smiled only for Clark to jump to his feet in an instant.
“Where is that bitch,” he roared only to see Lex lying on the ground in a graceful heap where he had fallen, “What the hell happened?”
“She’s gone,” Ronan said with a bright smile, “I am bound to you forever Clark.”
“You mean,” Clark asked still looking around at all the dancing shadows, “She won’t be back?”
“Yep,” Ronan said as he watched the bruise slowly start to fade from Clark’s cheek, “She will not be bothering us for some time.”
“What made her leave,” Clark asked rubbing his cheek only to cringe a little making Ronan move in to hug him for being so brave in the face of Death itself.
“Love,” Ronan said with a big bright smile, “I know that sounds corny as hell but it’s the truth.”
“Love,” Clark asked looking at him in doubt, “You mean love stopped that monster…no offense…she is your Mother.”
“None taken,” he said waving a hand, “A higher power stepped in and put her foot down.”
“Who,” Clark asked.
“A Mother who loves,” Ronan said and looked over at Lex, “Shouldn’t we check to see if he is alright?”
“Shit,” Clark said under his breath and ran over to check on him just as Chloe and the gang came running into the center of the labyrinth muddy and covered in mud and other debris.
“It took us forever,” she said with a feral grin, “But the ax never fails.”
“What was all that screaming about,” Lana asked looking at the busted and scorched fountain, “And the earthquake?”
“Meteor freak,” Ronan said looking just as human as ever, “Kidnapped Lex and brought him here to kill.”
“What,” Pete asked looking to see Clark helping Lex to his feet.
“Luckily the meteor freak was allergic to water,” Ronan said, “When Clark pushed him in.”
“What kind of meteor freak,” Chloe asked, “What was his name?”
“Not a clue,” Clark said as Lex groaned about a killer headache, “I just pushed him into the fountain to help get Lex away from him and he sort of short circuited and exploded.”
“As you can see,” Ronan said pointing at the damage, “He made quite a mess on his departure from this plane of existence.”
“Are you one of those new age people,” Lana asked looking at Ronan, “Because I don’t know how to understand you at all?”
“Yes,” Ronan said smiling at her.”
“Where do you find these people Clark,” Lana asked looking over at him.
“Nightclubs,” Clark said with a goofy grin, “In Metropolis.”
“My head,” Lex groaned.
“The camera,’ Pete cried looking around, “I seemed to of lost it!”
“What,” Chloe shrieked tripping over the rope around them.
Ronan smiled.

It turned out that Lex could not remember anything that had happened and the others had found their camera much to Clark’s horror. The three of them had been spying on them and got a great shot of them kissing in the moonlight. The little sneaks.
“What are you doing Ronan,” Clark asked as he walked up the stairs to the loft to see Ronan building something that resembled a small altar.
“Just giving thanks to someone who was looking out for us,” he said with a smile turning to look at him.
“New age,” Clark asked with a cocked brow.
“Yep,” Ronan said jumping across the loft to wrap his arms around his waist, “Why?”
“Lana bought a book,” Clark told him as he kissed his forehead.
“No,” Ronan said putting a hand over his mouth and looked at him in disbelief, “You mean to tell me she knows how to read?”
Clark snorted, “Yes she knows how to read.”
“Wow,” he said shaking his fiery mane, “Will wonders never cease?”
“Be nice,” Clark said playfully punching him in the shoulder which made Ronan snicker.
“I just can’t believe that I’m actually free,” Ronan said pulling Clark closer to him, “I don’t have to worry about her coming for me.”
“Come on,” Clark said putting an arm around his shoulder to turn him around, “Let’s go talk to mom and dad.”
“Just one moment,” a voice hissed from the darkness and Ronan instinctively threw his arms around Clark.
The two of them slowly turned around to look at the mirror to see a perfect female version of Ronan standing there clothed only in blinding darkness. Her face appeared to be calm and serene one moment and bubbling with anger the next.
“Don’t you ever think you’ve escaped me for a moment,” Macha smiled darkly as she came closer in the mirror causing it to shake, “I’ll be looking in on you from time to time my Beautiful Death.”
“Mother,” Ronan said taking a few steps towards her, “Why won’t you just let me be happy?”
“You are a God of Darkness,” she said putting her hands up against the glass and he knew that if she wanted she could shatter it and come through, “You are my mirror image.”
“I am your mirror image,” Ronan said looking up into her burning black eyes and smiled, “I’m the image of everything you can never be.”
Her black eyes softened somewhat. He had finally figured it out. He was everything she could never be and that frightened her. It was the one and only thing that frightened the Dark Mother of Death. She had wanted to keep him all to herself and never share him with anyone because he was a part of her that she could never be.
A soft smile graced her beautiful face that could scorch the skin from a mortal’s bones and she slowly stepped back from the mirror to stop the shaking, “I will be checking in on you my son,” she said and then turned to look at Clark with blinding eyes, “You as well, Superman.”
Ronan bowed his head and Macha giggled like a possessed school girl, “I’m going to give you a gift, son.”
“Mother,” Ronan tried only to be knocked flat on his back by an invisible hand and Clark could not move to stop him because he was frozen to the spot.
“I do not give gifts my son,” Macha said stepping up the mirror causing it to tremble violently, “As you well know.”
“I know,” he said trying to move but couldn’t.
“Think of this as proof,” Macha said with a sad smile that he had never seen on her face ever in all his centuries of being alive, “That I do love you my Beautiful Death.”
Ronan looked into her eyes and for a moment thought he saw love radiating from those cold depths of endless night, “During the day you will walk as a mortal man,” she spoke in a humming voice that shook his very bones, “And of the night you will walk as a God of Darkness.”
The mirror blanked itself and Clark could finally move. He was at Ronan’s side in an instant and held him in his arms, “Are you alright?”
“Yeah,” he said with a smile looking up into his eyes, “I’m okay.”
Suddenly Ronan’s head was thrown back in Clark’s arms and all his immortal radiance left his being. He looked around and wondered what the hell had happened and suddenly realized that he needed to breathe or he was going to pass out.
“Are you okay,” Clark asked looking him over to see that he still looked the same only more human is all.
“I’m fine,” he said looking at his hands and looked up to see the sun shine in on him through the window.
Clark immediately pulled him up and had him in the shadows in an instant, “No Clark,” Ronan said with a laugh, “Look.”
Clark’s eyes widened when Ronan stepped out into the sunlight without being consumed by it, “She wasn’t lying.”
Tears came to Ronan’s eyes and spilled from the edges without having blood in them. They were crystal clear.
“Look at me,” Ronan laughed as he spun around full circle, “I’m standing in the light.”
“Amazing,” Clark said walking over to pull him close, “I guess she really does love you.”
“Do you know what this means,” Ronan said looking into his eyes.
“I can finally take down all the tarps and stuff,” Clark said with a playful smile.
“No,” Ronan said smacking his shoulder and then rubbed his hand, “Ouch.”
“Are you okay,” Clark asked gently taking his hand in his and caressed it lovingly and looked it over with his x-ray vision to see that it was not broken.
“It just hurt,” he said looking at his hand in amazement, “This means I’m not bound to darkness anymore.”
Clark looked at him and Ronan smiled, “I can walk in both worlds.”
“As a man,” Clark said with a big smile, “And a God.”
Ronan pulled Clark close and looked deep into his eyes, “Thank you.”
“For what,” Clark asked.
“For loving me,” Ronan said as he rubbed his pale cheek against Clark’s, “For loving me enough to save me.”
9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999
The two of them stood there at the barn exit looking out at the light that danced across the farm yard. Ronan looked over at Clark who was standing beside him, “Is this the end of the story?”
“Nope,” Clark said taking him by the hand, “It’s just the beginning.”
Ronan smiled and Clark took him by the hand and led him out into the bright world of day for the first time in forever.
9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999
"Wow," Danu said looking at her dark sister, "You did good, but it took you long enough."
"Hush," Macha said smiling down at her son who was dancing in the sunlight with his Superman, "Perfection is lovely in waiting."
Danu rolled her eyes, "Have you ever thought about coloring your hair?"
"No," Macha said looking at her bright sister, "But I will if you will."
"No," Danu said with a bright smile as she took her sister by the hand, "I will if you will."
The End…or is it?
I would love to thank everyone that has read my story and reviewed it. It has meant a lot to me. Thank you all so much and may life give you all the happiness and love that you deserve.
*Note: I do not own the song lyrics. I just changed them around to set the mood. The song is called The Mummers’ Dance by Loreena McKennitt. Also the last part is similar to an episode of Ab Fab with God and Satan. Not really sure which one episode, I just thought it would be funny to add.

Clark and Ronan walked along the wall of roses to where the fountain was gently spewing water out of a fish’s mouth. The both of them looked down to see that different colors of goldfish were swimming around in the clear water.
