It always has protected him. This mask behind which he could hide. Every time. It has been so easy. When his mother died he used the mask to show strength. He had to be there for Charlie and his father. He had to show self-control. He wasn’t supposed to cry, crouch into a corner and show weakness. No. He was Don. He had to be there for Charlie. He had to be there for the only person he ever really cared about. And yet...
He cannot let go of Charlie’s blood spilled body. He sits on the black asphalt in the middle of the street, policemen running around, Meghan crying, Colby comforting her and David giving some orders, still shocked. Don isn’t sure if he is dreaming or not. Everything seems so surreal. He’s not even aware of the fact that Charlie has stopped breathing minutes ago. He doesn’t even realize that he has put his mask aside. It won’t rescue him this time.
“It’s okay to cry.”, he whispers, sobbing, into Charlie’s hair, red from blood. “It’s okay to cry...”
