ch 15
“Sara, what’s the matter?” Grissom asked.
“She hates me. I am an awful mother.”
“Sweetie, she doesn’t hate you.”
“Then why did she say she did?”
“Kids will be kids.” He remembered that Catherine used to tell him Lindsay hated her all the time.
“I can’t do this. Amy hates me. Sam probably does too.” Sara huffed. “What about the new one. It’ll probably come out hating me.”
“Don’t talk so foolish. Sam loves you. Amy does too, she is just a kid. She has had some rough times, Lindsay was like this too.”
Sara sobbed harder.
“Do you want me to go talk to her?”
“She is stubborn.”
“Just like you.” Grissom smiled. “Now come here.”
He stood in front of her. She stood up and into is welcoming embrace.
“Sweetie, you will be alright. I am here to help you, I promise.” He soothed her.
“What if I’m not? What if I’m like my mother?”
“You won’t be.”
“Sara, you go lay down, Sam will be awake soon. I’m gonna go talk to Amy.”
“Alright.”
Grissom padded to Amy’s room and rapped on the door.
“Amy, it’s Grissom, can I come in?”
Silence.
“Amy.”
The door opened.
“What?”
“Can we talk, please?”
“I suppose. If we must.” She huffed.
Grissom walked into her room.
“Sara is upset.”
“Because of what I said?”
“Yes.”
“I didn’t mean it.”
“She doesn’t know that.”
“I had a rough time in foster care.”
“So did she. Maybe you should talk to her about it.”
“Maybe. Mom was in Foster Care?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“When she was younger.”
“Oh.”
“She wants to do right by you.”
“I know, but I just want to be a kid.”
“You will get lots of chances, I promise.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Maybe you should tell her that.”
“Alright.”
Amy got up to go find Sara.
She knocked on the doorway to the room.
“Mom.”
“What?”
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to yell at you. I don’t hate you.” She was crying.
Sara took her in her arms. “It’s ok, baby.”
“I have never had anyone care for me, not since mom and dad died.”
“I do care for you. A piece of me always has.”
“Grissom says that you had a horrible time in foster care.”
“Yes.”
“Will you tell me about it?”
“If you want.”
