Chapter 15

AN: The plot bunnies are feeling particular lethargic lately (perhaps due to massive quantities of turkey ingested) so any reviews would be greatly appreciated.

As always, these chapters and this story would be riddled with grammatical errors without the ever vigilant Elfmaiden25. If you enjoy this story or even if you don’t, I highly recommend reading her stories at www.mystifyingdreams.com

Chapter 15

As the footsteps from the home’s owner drifted towards the kitchen, Emily glanced back at the bookshelf in front of her.

Reading several names on the binders, she came to the realization that if she went home now, another little kid would end up on this shelf. Looking down, she was once again gazing at the image of a smiling Heidi.

She shook her head. “I can’t, Brian,” She whispered.

“Emily, You have to come home now,” He replied.

She shook her head once again, “I still have to find an address.”

Silence filled the house as well as her mind.

“Hurry, Emily.” Emily could hear Brian’s hesitation and worry but steeled herself in her resolve.

She turned and walked over to the desk that held the most likely place to contain the information she was seeking. Glancing at the pictures quickly, she sighed in relief to see that they simply held images of a young happy boy and not replicas of the dark images that she had seen briefly in Heidi’s album. She promised the little boy in the pictures that she would do everything in her power to help him before those images could be captured.

Opening the middle drawer, she shuffled through the items as quickly and quietly as possible. She hoped that whoever had entered the house would remain in the kitchen long enough for her to find an address and make her departure.

Not finding anything in the first drawer, Emily moved to the side and opened a larger drawer. She smiled in triumphant in finding several file folders, neatly labeled with the local utility companies that serviced the area. Reaching inside one folder labeled Southwest Gas Corporation she pulled out the most recent statement.

“I got it. The address is 837 Red Gull St.”

*****

“I got it. The address is 837 Red Gull Street. His name is Nathan Anderson,” Emily whispered.

Brian heard Dave jot down the address and name. “Good girl, Emily. Now come home, okay?”

She nodded her head. Brian looked up at Dave who had stood up. Dave smiled at the younger man and mouthed, “Thank you.” Brian nodded his head and returned the smile. Dave held up the cordless phone and motioned toward the kitchen, signaling that he would call the department and pass on the information.

A gasp from Emily drew both men’s attention back to her.

“What’s going on, Emily?”

*****

“Well, well, well…look who we have here.” A large figure stood at the entrance to the small room. To Emily’s shock, his gaze riveted to her image. As the man entered the room, Emily stood frozen. His gaze looked at her as if she were prey for a hungry beast, looking up and down her small frame.

“Wait a minute…I know you.” He drew closer to the little girl.

Emily shook her head and walked backward until the desk stopped her body from moving further away from him.

Nathan Anderson now stood in front of her, towering several feet above her. His dark eyes bored into Emily’s lighter fear-filled one.

“It’s been…five years since I last saw you,” He whispered. He reached a hand out toward her face.

Emily shrank back away from his reach, still unable to utter a word.

“But you haven’t changed much, still so beautiful. With that long dark hair and bright green eyes. So lovely…So innocent,” His voice held a note of adoration. “I tried looking for you…but I guess Vegas is too big of a city to find one…single…little girl especially when I don’t even know her name.”

Unable to move away any further, Emily shut her eyes…willing herself to go back home. Just as she felt herself drift away, the touch of his hand jarred her back to the dim room.

Her gasp at the surprised touch was quickly replied by Brian’s question. “What’s going on, Emily?”

“What’s your name, little girl?” Nathan asked as he gently caressed her cheek.

*****

Emily’s breathing began to speed up. Brian became worried. Except for the projection dealing with Heidi, Emily’s breathing always remained steady, sometimes even dangerously slowed. There was a moment that seemed that Emily was returning. Her natural rosy color had begun to return and than suddenly she paled to a deathly white.

“Emily, come home. Dan is calling the police now. Come home, sweetie,” He pleaded.

Her breathing continued to increase in rate. She showed no reaction to Brain’s words.

“Emily…Emily, what’s going on?”

*****

Emily stood frozen as the man before her continued to speak to her, trying to get information from her. Even if she wanted to tell him, she didn’t think she could talk. She heard Brian telling her that Dan was calling the police and she hoped that they would hurry. For some reason, the touch of his cold hands kept her anchored to the room and unable to return to her home or her body.

“Emily…Emily, what’s going on?”

She sniffled slightly, “He’s touching me.”

The man, in front of her, widen his eyes in shock of her words. Emily watched as the light of understanding dawned in his eyes. His gaze returned to the paper that was clutched in Emily’s hand. All light escaped his eyes as he realized the implications of her being there.

******

“What?!” Brian said. He looked up at Dan who stood motionless as well. He was unable to comprehend the extent of her words.

“H..How?!” He asked.

Brian shook his head. In all their experience with projections, adults never heard Emily, much less interacted with her. As far as they knew, not even those that could hear her, could touch her. Like a specter, anyone who attempted to was left with nothing more than a handful of chilled air.

“Jesus, Dan…Who is this psycho?” Brian whispered as he looked into the stunned detectives eyes.

*****

“You’ve been a naughty little girl.” His venom sprayed across the short distance between them. Emily flinched and shut her eyes tightly at the feel of the small droplets on her face. “You must be punished!”

As quick as a viper, Nathan reached down and grabbed her forearm with a bruising force.

Emily couldn’t help the high-pitched scream, which escaped her, at the shock of the feel of his hand and the pain from the strong grip.

*****

The terrified scream wrenched from the body of the little girl startled the other occupants of the room.

“EMILY?” Her brother watched as Emily’s petite body began to shake viciously. Jim and Gil stood, watching, as the little girl thrashed against the sofa.

Brian stood motionlessly, unsure of what to do, as scream after scream escaped Emily. His gaze was drawn to the paleness of one of her flailing arms. It had begun to turn a deep blue color. “Jesus.” He rasped as the bruising became more distinct and formed in a shape of a large hand.

“EMILY…EMILY WAKE UP?!” He screamed.

*****

“WHO ARE YOU HELPING? TELL ME YOUR NAME!” Nathan Anderson continued to berate her.

Emily struggled against the fierce hold on her. While trying to will herself away from the man, the room and the house, she continued to scream.

“LET ME GO! LET ME GO!”

*****

“LET ME GO! LET ME GO!”

Brian grabbed the blanket and quickly wrapped her thrashing body, pinning her arms, and dragged the kicking and screaming girl into his arms. Screaming her name, Brian tried to draw her back into her body.

*****

“TELL ME YOUR NAME!”

In a last ditch effort to free herself from the man’s clutches, she reached up with her hand and started to claw his face with her small fingers.

Nathan drew back slightly from the sudden attack but never released his bruising grip on the young girl. He gave up on receiving an answer from her and calmly held her firmly as she struggled against him.

After a few seconds, Emily released that he had stop yelling at her. She stopped her struggles and looked into the eyes of the man who had hurt and killed so many children.

*****

Brian sighed in relief and felt the others in the room do the same as Emily finally calmed down. Holding her tightly against him with her face pressed against his chest, he was relieved that the ordeal was finally over.

He looked over his shoulder at Dan, “Make that call.”

Dan nodded his head and retrieved the phone he had dropped when Emily had first screamed. Brian moved his gaze to the two men who stood shell shocked before him.

“What the hell was that?” Jim Brass asked.

Brian only had the strength to shake his head. He didn’t even know how to explain it since he didn’t understand it himself.

He held Emily slightly away from him and gazed down at her face. He gasped when he realized that Emily hadn’t returned. Her face still held the look of death. What worried him most was the fact that he couldn’t even feel her breath.

*****

Emily held her breath waiting for Nathan Anderson to make his next move. Like a predator, watching prey right before an attack, Nathan patiently watched the little girl he still held firmly by the arm.

“Now, that we are both calmed. You are going to tell me exactly what I want to know. Isn’t that right?” He whispered.

Emily shook her head. She closed her eyes and with a great deal of determination willed herself back to her body. She barely felt or heard the man as he attempted to draw her back into his clutches.

Emily struggled out of his grasp. Excruciating pain swept through her soul as she wrenched herself away from the physical touch. She barely registered the earsplitting denial of Nathan Anderson as she echoed his scream with one of pain.
