Chapter Fourteen
The Engine room is in shambles, reminding Lucas of the Moon Pool. It lacks the smoke; however, the clutter and the fear lay scattered over the exposed ground, waiting to trip the unsuspecting. He watches the ground carefully, stepping around the debris, half expecting to see Tim O’Neil grinning from the shadows. Instead, there are only men milling around pointing guns and barking commands.
“C-captain?”
(I already don’t want you on my boat, Wolenczak.)
“What?” The tone is sharp, like broken glass and the young man jumps back as if he was just slapped. Shame flushes his face and he refuses to meet Hudson’s eyes; whatever the problem is, it dies on the boy’s lips and Hudson immediately feels guilty for causing its death. Wolenczak may be a pain in the ass, but he is still (whether he likes it or not) his responsibility. His tone takes on a more soothing, less accusatory tone. “What can I do for you, Mr. Wolenczak?”
Wolenczak leans over, pliable mouth against harsh ear, “I know that I’m technically a civilian, but if you need me: ask. I don’t care what it is.”
