Chapter 14 -- What Some People Won't Do . . .

“So. That was one of the hallucinations you were talking about,” Karen said, and Henry nodded.

“He keeps telling me he doesn’t see anything anymore, them, but he gets this expression on his face, and he zones out. At the worst of times, he gets so upset that . . .“ He waved his hands in the direction of the room. “Well, you saw what happens then.”

“Has he told you what they are?“ Juliette asked, and Henry shook his head.

“Not since the first time. The nurse who just stood by his bed and the other woman in his room whom he thought needed help for some reason. I guess after being sedated by the nurses, and then again by the doctor, he stopped talking about them, and even admitting he still has them, but I can always tell.“

“Has he gone into any kind of detail about them?“ Karen asked, and Henry almost violently shook his head.

“No, and I don’t want to know them either, especially since they aren’t real.”

“But, they know for sure that it’s the hallucinations that are making him so physically sick?“ Gus asked.

“They haven’t made an official diagnosis yet,” Henry answered shortly.

“Any chance he’s faking it? To avoid the trouble he knows is coming when he gets out of the hospital?” Lassiter asked, and as Gus, Henry, and Juliette scowled at him, he frowned and held out his hands. “Hey, the question had to be asked, if only for official purposes,” he said, and Karen nodded.

“He’s right,” she said. “Even though we’re the only ones right now who know that Shawn’s faked his psychic abilities, it doesn’t mean we can leave anything to chance, because eventually, all this will come out.”

“Pretty damned dramatic way to put off an investigation, don’t you think?” Henry demanded, his tone acidic. “I mean, I know that Shawn has a flair for the dramatic -- gets it from his mother -- but to actually make himself heave up everything he’s eaten, and in the meantime trying to bust every stitch in his gun shot body?” He snorted. “Please. Even Shawn wouldn’t do something that stupid, not to mention painful to him personally, just to get out of trouble.”

“Which reminds me,” Gus asked, though he didn’t look at anyone. “How come I’m still walking around? I’m just as guilty of lying to everyone as Shawn is.”

“And technically, so am I. I believe it‘s called ‘lying by omission‘,” Henry nodded, and Karen looked at them.

“Right now, I’m taking everything very slowly. If any of this comes to light, not only I, but the entire SBPD will come out of this looking like it’s manned by idiots. Until Spencer is strong enough, and healthy enough, to defend himself and his actions, the official line is that Shawn’s still a psychic.”

“Mr. Spencer,” the doctor said as he entered, and Henry all but jumped to attention.

“Doctor, what’s going on here?” He demanded, angrily. “We’ve decided that it’s the hallucinations that are making him physically ill, but why are they happening? You’ve done test after test, and you keep telling me that physically there’s nothing wrong with him! In fact, you keep saying he‘s healing faster than most people would, or even should!”

“Mr. Spencer, physically, there is nothing wrong with him. I’ve done CAT scans and MRI’s, and almost every blood test known to man. So far everything has come back negative. There is no physical reason for him to be having these hallucinations.”
