Charlie and Don

Pairing: Don/Charlie
Fandom: NUMB3RS
Rating: PG-13 (Pre-Slash)
Word Count: 346

Feedback: awesome
Author's Notes: Surprisingly enough, not a death!fic! Happens on the day Don’s and Charlie’s mother dies. And yes, I know, lame title, but I think it quite fits for this short FF. Enjoy!
When Don entered the garage he could not make out Charlie at all. Black boards were hanging on the walls, standing on the floor or propped up in chairs. It was the view Don had gotten used to in the last few months. He could not understand why Charlie had been reacting in such an unusual way. It hadn’t been they way you normally would guess when your mother got cancer.
Charlie saw Don first. He appeared suddenly behind a black board.
“Don, I can’t talk right now. I have a major thought and...and...I have to stick to it before I get the whole equation wrong–”
“Don’t you always have a major thought about this?”, Don interrupted and made a step towards his brother.
Charlie glared at him, then answered: “Just...go, Don. I don’t need this kind of distraction right now.”
But Don didn’t leave. Instead he breathed out deeply and went on speaking.
“Charlie, I have to tell you something. About Mom.”
But Charlie didn’t seem to hear him. He kept on writing numbers on the boards, lost in thoughts and in a state of deep concentration. And yet Don realized that Charlie’s hands began to shake a little.
“Charlie, please listen.” Don tried to seize Charlie’s shoulders, tried to calm him down but it was useless. “Charlie, stop it, please, I need to tell you someth–”
“I know what you wanna tell me!”, Charlie suddenly screamed and whirled around, only now revealing his unstoppable tears. “I know what you wanna tell me...”
Don didn’t know if it was the right moment to comfort Charlie, to embrace him, stroke his hair and kiss his forehead.
“She... died an hour ago.”, Don whispered when Charlie had stopped shouting.
They stood like this for a long time, two brothers facing each other, one of them strong, the other one fragile. Being apart for quite a long time they had to get to know each other once again. Both of them knew that from now on there were only the two of them.
