ch 14
Sara had a school all picked out for Amy. She had to take some summer classes to catch up to the other kids her age. Bouncing in foster care had not been kind to her academics.
“Mom. Why do I have to go to school in the summer?” Amy protested.
“Because you are a bit behind. It’s the way to catch up.”
“But I want to have fun. It is summer break.”
“I know, but I don’t want you to feel left out.”
The phone rang.
“Sara, it’s for you.” Grissom stated.
Sara took the phone. “I’m afraid I will have to decline your offer, sorry. Things have come up in my life. I’m sorry to have wasted your time.”
Sara hung the phone up.
“What was that all about?” Grissom asked.
“The teaching position at Berkley.”
“Oh. You declined it?”
“Yes. Why wouldn’t I? Things have changed.”
“I didn’t expect you to give up your life.”
“I didn’t. I just have a new one now.”
“Is that what you want?”
“It is now.”
Amy rushed towards Grissom. “Can you please tell mom that I need to have fun? I’m only ten.”
“What are you talking about?”
“She is sending me to summer school.”
“There is nothing wrong with that. She has your best interests at heart.”
“I hate you guys.” Amy spat. “You don’t want me to have fun.” She ran to her room.
Sara collapsed into a fit of tears.
