Chapter 13
(The next morning Morgan is woken up by Sarah, who nudges her gently)
Sarah: Morgan wake up, it's saturday morning, I have to go to work soon.
(Morgan wakes up, rubs her eyes and stretches, that's when she notices two figures on the fire escape.)
Morgan: Sarah, somebody is on the fire escape.
(Sarah gets out of the bed with Morgan and they walk over to the window. Sitting on the fire escape
looking at them smiling is Jeffrey and Jack. Sarah and Morgan hide behind the curtains in their nightgowns)
Morgan: What are you two doing out there, why didn't you wake someone up?
Jack: We didn't want to disturb nobody.
Sarah: Were you two out there all night?
Jack: Yeah.
Morgan: You could of woken someone up and slept in the apartment, instead of out there.
Jeffrey: It wasn't too bad.
Jack: Besides it was a warm night.
Sarah: Are you in trouble with the police?
Jack: No, a man named Snyder who runs THE REFUGE is looking for me and I have to lay low until the
newsie rally, Jeffrey wanted to keep me company.
Sarah: You two must be hungry, why don't you two go up on the roof and Morgan and I will bring you
some breakfast.
Jeffrey: Sarah, why don't you meet Jack up on the roof, while I talk to Morgan down here.
Morgan: Jeffrey can eat his breakfast down here with me.
Sarah: Ok.
(Morgan watched Jack head up to the roof and then watched Sarah put on her robe over her nightgown
and get a basket of food and milk for Jack. Morgan waited for Sarah to leave before she talked to
Jeffrey)
Morgan: Thanks Jeffrey, I don't think I would of been able to climb up to the roof , using the fire
escape.
Jeffrey: It's ok, besides I have a feeling those two belong together.
Morgan: Yeah, I realized that yesterday, um Jeffrey I was wondering if you would like to come in from
there, it's ok, as long as we're quiet.
Jeffrey: Ok.
(Jeffrey climbed into the apartment through the window, he sat down on the couch. Morgan grabbed her
robe and slipped it on, it was alittle big on her, but she like it like that, she didn't even mind that
bottom of the robe dragged on the floor)
Morgan: It was nice of you to keep Jack company last night.
Jeffrey: Well it was the least I could do, since Synder was looking for him at the lodging house.
Morgan: Sounds like Snyder wants Jack back at the refuge to serve out his sentence.
(Jeffrey pulled out the omni, he opened it up and showed Morgan the red flashing light. Jeffrey closes
it up and shoves it back in his pants pocket)
Jeffrey: I figure we have to stay until the strike is over and the newsies win.
Morgan: Monday is the newsie rally and let's hope all goes well.
Jeffrey: Then we can get back to Bogg and Olivia.
Morgan: Yeah, I miss her alot Jeffrey.
Jeffrey: I miss Bogg, I've never been on an assignment without him.
Morgan: I hope they are ok.
Jeffrey: Yeah.
(Morgan got up and went over to the extra loaf of bread, she cut a few peices and then buttered them.
She grabbed two glasses and filled them with milk and set them on a tray. Morgan came over with it and
set it down on the coffee table.)
Morgan: Sorry it's only bread and milk Jeffrey.
Jeffrey: It's ok.
(Morgan and Jeffrey ate their breakfast in silence. Meanwhile Jack and Sarah were talking)
Sarah: Papa tells everyone about Jack Kelly, the strike leader who occasionally takes his meals with us.
Jack: This is one strike leader, who'll be glad when it's over, then I'm bound for Sante Fe. Nothing to
keep me here anymore. You ought to see it, everything is bigger out there, the sky, the desert, even the
sun.
(Jack takes his glass of milk and drinks some of it, he sets it down.)
Sarah: It's the same sun that shines here.
Jack: Yeah, just looks different.
Sarah: I gotta get ready for work.
(A flood of emotions so complex that Jack couldn't begin to sort them out, she didn't want him to go.
He couldn't believe it, because he felt so unworthy of any kind of love, without even realizing what
he was doing, he took her hand and turned her around to face him.)
Jack: Sarah, I ain't use to having people care whether I stay or go....
(Sarah's eyes lingered on Jack's face. She quickly kissed him and Jack watched as she climbed down
to the apartment. He gazed at the peice of bread in his hand and then tossed it to the pigeons that
were waiting for the bread. Morgan and Jeffrey watched Sarah hurry to get ready for work.)
Morgan: Maybe you should go up to the roof and find out what happened.
Jeffrey: Sure.
Morgan: I'll see what I can get from Sarah, she looked like she was ready to cry.
Jeffrey: I don't know, but I'll talk to you later, you'll find us at Medda's, since Jack can't go back
to the lodging house, cause of Snyder.
(Morgan watched as Jeffrey headed to the roof. Morgan went into the bedroom and found sarah adjusting
her dress.)
Morgan: Are you ok?
Sarah: I'm fine.
Morgan: Do you want to talk about it?
(Sarah sat down on the bed and sighed)
Sarah: He's leaving as soon as the newsie strike is over Morgan, I really thought he'd want to stay.
Morgan: Maybe he will stay Sarah, you never know.
Sarah: No, he's determined to go to Sante Fe Morgan, but I can't stop him.
Morgan: No, you can't, but maybe he will change his mind, once he realizes how much you and your family
mean to him.
Sarah: Think so?
Morgan: Yeah.
Sarah: Thanks Morgan.
(Sarah hugged Morgan and then quickly grabbed her basket she had her work in)
Sarah: See you at supper Morgan.
(Morgan watched as Sarah left and then looked around the apartment. Morgan got dressed and left a
note, she was going to go to time square and strike with the other newsies. Jack and Jeffrey headed down
the fire escape to time square to strike with the other newsies. Morgan bumped into them.)
Morgan: So ready to strike?
Jack: Yeah.
Jeffrey: Of course.
(Later that night. Jack and Jeffrey were talking to Medda about the newsie rally, they had worked out
all of the details. Jack explained to Medda about Snyder and Medda agreed it would be much safer for
Jack and Jeffrey to stay until after the newsie strike was over. Medda had found them a spare room to
sleep in. It wasn't really big, but it fit two nice size cots in there and room enough for them to put
their belongings. Jeffrey laid on the cot, he was thinking about Bogg, when Jack asked him a question.)
Jack: Do you think I should stay after the newsie strike or go to Sante Fe?
Jeffrey: It's up to you Jack.
Jack: I know, but I've been thinking about the going to Sante Fe for so long, that was before I met the
Jacobs family.
Jeffrey: They really care about you Jack, I can tell, you're lucky to have a family that cares about you.
Jack: I guess, so you ready for the newsie rally?
Jefferey: Yeah, it's gonna be great.
Jack: Never thought I'd end up a strike leader.
Jeffrey: I never thought I'd be striking along side you and the other newsies.
Jack: Good night Jeffrey.
Jeffrey: Night Jack.
(Morgan pulled off her shirt, she thought that Sarah was sleeping, but Sarah had noticed the scar on
the back of her shoulder, since Morgan had removed the bandage that morning to let it breath and heal
on it's own. Morgan grabbed the nightgown to slip on.)
Sarah: Oh my, what's that?
Morgan: Nothing.
(Sarah sat up and reached over and touched it, it was round, red and almost hallow hole in the back of
her shoulder.)
Morgan: I was shot Sarah, right in the back of my shoulder, a man with a gun and he would of killed
Jeffrey if I hadn't pushed Jeffrey out of the way, it happened before we came to New York.
Sarah: Who would shoot you?
Morgan: A robber. (Morgan lied)
Sarah: Oh that's awful.
Morgan: Yes, it is and it's almost completely healed.
Sarah: Does it hurt?
Morgan: Sometimes, it depends.
(Morgan slipped on the nightgown, she crawled under the blankets, she looked at Sarah.)
Morgan: Please don't tell anyone about it, only you and Jeffrey know about it.
Sarah: I won't tell anyone about it and it was very brave of you to save Jeffrey's life.
Morgan: He would of done the same, if I was in danger.
Sarah: You love him, don't you?
Morgan: Yes, very much.
Sarah: I can tell that he loves you very much Morgan.
Morgan: I know.
Sarah: Maybe I'll find someone that loves me like that.
Morgan: You already did Sarah, you just don't know it yet.
(Morgan watched as Sarah sighed, Morgan turned over to her back and looked up at the ceiling, she
missed Olivia alot and she was very worried about her and even Bogg, she had tried to distract herself
from it, but it only worked most of the time. Sarah looked over at Morgan and closed her eyes. Morgan
finally fell asleep after a half hour.)
(The next morning Morgan is woken up by Sarah, who nudges her gently)
