Chapter 13 -- Now Everyone Knows
“Now look,” he swallowed. “This is getting a little ridiculous. My friends and my father can’t see you, and they think I’m going insane! Why don’t you go join your Apple Jack spewing friend, and spit Boo Berrys at someone else, okay?”
She stared at him, and suddenly, spit out more Boo Berrys.
“Oh, come on! Is that really necessary!? ” He tried to move quickly, to avoid the barrage of Boo Berrys, but just about doubled over in pain, and cried out.
“Shawn!” Shawn looked up as the door all but burst open, and his father, accompanied by the Chief, Gus, Juliette, and Lassiter as they all dashed into the room.
Suddenly, everyone was engulfed in a bright white light, and Shawn cried out as agonizing pain ripped through his skull, and he grabbed at his head, as his body almost bent over double on the bed, and he rocked back and forth, even as he knew that none of the others could see the light any more than they could see the people . . . Or the cereal.
“Damn it!” He all but screamed as he looked at the woman who looked scared and confused and tried to back away from the light. “It wants you!” He all but screamed through the agony shredding his head apart. “Geeze! It’s killing me here! Can’t you see that!? Will you just go into it already!? What is it with you freakin‘ people! It‘s not a bad thing, I can promise you that, and I don‘t know why you can‘t tell that!” He moaned and covered his eyes as she finally turned and all but fled into the brilliant light.
As if it had never been there, the light was suddenly gone, and Shawn looked up, barely conscious, into the worried eyes of his friends. He wanted to reassure them. He wanted to tell them he was fine, but that just wasn’t the case.
His head was splitting, his eyes burned, his chest and side were on fire, and to top it off . . .
He tried to get out of the bed, but it was a lost cause, and he violently vomited his breakfast and lunch all over the bed, just as a nurse ran in. she quickly assessed the situation and stuck her head out the door. “Janet!” She yelled. “Get Doctor Connors! It’s Shawn again!” She went up to Shawn as he dry-heaved, and sighed as she looked at the others. “I’ll need you to leave the room for a while, please. We’ll get him cleaned up, and the doctor will come and let you know when you can come back in.”
The others left the room and went down the hall to the waiting room, where Henry fell into the nearest chair. He wiped a hand over his eyes and looked for all the world as if he wanted to find the nearest, dearest, deepest, darkest hole he could find and just crawl into it and never come out.
