Chapter Twelve
Clark was seated on the sofa in front of the television with both his parents sitting on either side. He had a large bowl of popcorn fresh from popping in the microwave in his lap, and he was super excited. Zak was going to be performing for Metropolis Midnight. Why the show was called that he had no clue. They aired at nine every night. It was the most popular music show a singer could be on in Metropolis. Zak had agreed to perform live in order to further promote Lex’s charity bash for children with cancer.
He began to clap like a maniac when Zak walked out onto the set. The blond looked super sexy in those faded jeans and that yellow shirt. The entire live audience went crazy when they saw him wave.
The hosts name was Rosette and she began asking him all kinds of questions about his music and awesome success. Clark got really nervous when she began to ask Zak more personal questions, like his love life.
Zak just smiled and he was so radiant. He looked like he was always in control of everything. His eyes were like glowing greens stars. “I have only one lover,” he said, waving into the cameras.
Clark caught himself waving back at his smiling face and his parents laughed, making him blush something furious. He knew that Rosette thought Zak meant all his adoring fans, but he knew better. The audience was simply eating and drinking him up. It was so obvious that Zak could form his own religious cult right then and there. Clark truly believed those people would follow the blond anywhere. Hell, he would.
He was a little upset that he couldn’t be there with Zak. But, he didn’t want to risk the chance of someone snapping a photo of him kissing the megastar. And he would get caught at it to. It was just the way his luck ran.
He looked from his mom to his dad. The two of them had welcomed Zaky back home with open arms. They didn’t even care that he and Zak were now romantically involved. His mom had simply picked his dad’s jaw up and said, “About time.” His parents were the greatest ever.
“The song I’ll be performing tonight is one that I wrote when I was still living in Smallville,” Zak said, smiling at all the signs people were holding up. They were all so bright and sparkly. “I’ve finally put it to music, thanks to the sea-witch holding me prisoner in the studio.”
The audience roared with laughter. It made Clark smile to. Oh, he remembered Ursula well.
“What kind of wind effects would you like, Zak?” Rosette asked with a smile. “We have breezy, windy, Chicago, and surrender Dorothy.”
“Um,” Zak said, laughing. “Breezy will be fine. I do so love having the wind in my hair.”
“Well,” Rosette said. “Here he is! Zak Knight!”
The audience of young and older fans went wild when the music began to play. Zak ran up onto the round stage, picking up the ivory painted microphone.
Clark’s mom and dad were laughing because his cheers had sent the popcorn flying over their heads. He couldn’t help it. He was such a fan of awesome.
“Hmm, that’s provocative,” Martha said with a cocked brow.
Zak was dancing to his own music and his body was so serpent-like. It reminded Clark of a cobra. The blond moved as though he were made of water. Zak opened his mouth and his voice was like liquid platinum.
I got my sights set on you and I’m ready to aim
I have a heart that will never be tamed
I knew you were something special
When you spoke my name
Now I can’t wait to see you again
“Oh,” Martha said, elbowing her son. “Really?”
Jonathan chuckled and Clark shushed them both with a glare. That only caused them to laugh even more.
He looked back at the television and couldn’t take his eyes off the beautiful siren of the sea. His dancing was for more seductive and mesmerizing than a snake-charmer’s flute.
I’ve got a way of knowing when something is right
I feel like I must have known you in another life
‘Cause I felt this deep connection when you looked in my eyes
Now I can’t wait to see you again
Zak spun gracefully around in a full circle, causing his hair to catch the flashing lights, making it look like coils of solid gold bouncing around his beautiful face. The lights flashed off for about two seconds and when they came back on, he was surrounded by male and female backup dancers. Clark didn’t even look at them. They were all mere candles compared to the raging inferno that was Zak. The choreography would have made Paula Abdul weep with wonder.
The last time I freaked out
I just kept looking down
I st-st-stuttered when you asked me what I’m thinking about
Felt like I couldn’t breathe
You asked what’s wrong with me
My best friend Petey said “oh he’s just being Zaky”
The next time we hang out
I will redeem myself
My heart can’t rest till then
Woh woh I
I can’t wait to see you again
Clark’s mind suddenly raced back to a place in time long ago. He was sitting at a table with Zak and Pete, watching their classmates dancing. He remembered how Zak wasn’t speaking at all. He had just looked nervous all night long. Hell, he had been to. All he seemed to want to do was take Zak in his arms and dance the damn night away.
“What are you thinking about?” He had asked him in concern, seeing how pale the blond had looked.
Zak hadn’t even looked at him. The poor guy had looked like he was lost in his own little world.
Clark had elbowed him. “What’s wrong with you?” There was still nothing.
That was when Pete had punched him in the arm. “Oh, he’s just being Zaky.”
I got this crazy feeling, deep inside
When you called and asked to see me tomorrow night
I’m not a mind reader but I’m reading the signs
That you can’t wait to see me again
Clark shook his head. He had been so damned blind. All those wasted years.
The last time I freaked out
I just kept looking down
I st-st-stuttered when you asked me what I’m thinking about
Felt like I couldn’t breathe

Zak’s voice soared in perfection, the lights flashed off, and the audience wildly cheered. That was when a gun suddenly fired, people began screaming in a panic, and the lights immediately came back on.
Clark sat frozen in his seat, looking at Zak who was on the ground, not moving. His parents were on their feet in horror. People were screaming in a panic as the camera focused on the unmoving blond. Lex had even run out, going down on his knees beside him, yelling for someone to call an ambulance. Rosette was doing her best to keep people calm, while screaming for security at the same time. Clark’s eyes glowed red with rage and he was suddenly gone in a violent blur.

Note: These song lyrics belong to Miley Cyrus. I really like this song for some reason. Perhaps it is because I can see a super sexy gay guy singing his heart out to it to the man he loves.
