Chapter Twelve
“Well,” Principal Kwan said getting to his feet, “I’m sure the two of you would like some time to yourselves. Please, feel free to use my office for the time being. I have a staff meeting to attend, please, excuse me.”
I stepped to the side and he walked by me and closed the door behind him. He had just left me all alone in here with this evil witch.
“Dear Heart,” the lovely old woman questioned with a soothing voice, “Aren’t you going to come and hug your Grandmother?”
I didn’t know how to react until Rue said, “You had better do as she says.”
“Hush, faery,” she reprimanded sternly, “Let “him” decide.”
My eyes widened in disbelief, “You can see him?”
“Of course,” she said waving my question away as if it were mere dust, “He is a handsome guardian.”
“Who are you,” I asked as Rue fluttered over to my left shoulder in agitation.
“I thought I answered that already,” she said with a soft smile and got to her feet, “I really must be getting senile in my old age.”
How in the hell was she able to wear those break neck heels? She looked ancient and yet seemed full of youthful vitality.
“You know me, young Darrian,” she said and that tight bun fell into wisps of snow white hair that flowed around her slender shoulders and down her back in radiant splendor, “You know me better than most, Dear Heart.”
“You,” I whispered in slight fear, “That was you in my dream.”
“My memory,” she corrected, “You were in my dream memory.”
“How old are you,” I asked and was dazzled by her ancient beauty.
“Old enough to have seen 73,000 silver moons rise and set in the Goddess’s hair,” she said with a secret smile.
I never was good at math. Take 73,000 and divide it by…how many days are there in a year again? Oh, screw it! She was fucking old.
“You’re the one who…,” I tried to say but couldn’t.
“Cursed you,” she said in serene voice.
I blinked, “Huh? Me? What?”
Rue hunkered down and bared his razor sharp teeth at her.
“Peace, guardian,” she said and held up a glowing pale hand, “I mean no harm, this day.”
“Hold it,” I snapped and it felt good, “What the fuck is going on, Granny?”
“Such ugly language,” she laughed and combed her pale hand through her long white locks, “From such a pretty mouth.”
I blushed and growled, “Answer me.”
Her eyes suddenly became as blue as the sky outside, “How do you think your mother died, Dear Heart?”
That had totally caught me off guard.
“What does that have to do with anything,” I asked.
She took a graceful step forward, “Everything.”
I didn’t know what to say. She was really starting to scare me.
“How did she die,” she asked in a whisper that was like a fading breeze.
“A car crash,” I told her.
“And who told you that garbage,” she asked as she gazed around the little room in distaste.
Garbage?
“My step…,” I tried to say but my voice left me.
“Come with me, Dear Heart,” she said and came closer, “There is a limo outside that will take us for a little drive around this lovely little town.”
“I can’t leave school grounds,” I said and Rue seemed to be frozen as if by a spell, “What did you do to him?”
“I’m keeping him from biting out my eyes,” she said and walked passed me, “Come, Dear Heart.”
“Why are you calling me that,” I asked, “That is what you called…?”
She turned back to look at me before opening the door, “Come with me, Darrian.”
I shook my head, “How do I know that you’re not the one who killed my stepfamily?”
She cocked her head to the side, “You don’t.”
“How do I know you won’t kill me,” I asked.
“Because,” she said ominously, “If I wanted you dead, Dear Heart, you would be.”
“My mother,” I asked and really looked into her eyes, “Tell me how she died.”
“I will,” she said and opened the door, “But you have to come with me before I tell you how Selena died.”
She knew my mom’s name. I went with her.

Rue was lying in my lap as the limo slowly drove out of the school parking lot. Whatever she had done to him, it was a doozey. He was out cold. Some guardian he turned out to be. No milk and fresh blood for him later.
“Well,” I asked looking straight ahead at her, “Tell me what you know.”
“Would you like anything to drink, Dear Heart,” she asked and gestured towards the mini bar, “We have all kinds of tasty beverages.”
I shook my head. I thirsted for what she had to say.
“No, but thank you,” I said and fought not to leap and throttle her until her bones turned to dust in my hands, “Please, just tell me.”
She smiled, “You don’t have the power to strike me, Dear Heart.”
My eyes widened and she laughed, “Did you think that you’re the only one who can read minds?”
Great, now I was an open book. This was just perfect. She could use all my secrets against me if she wanted.
“As much fun as that sounds,” she laughed and gestured towards the mini bar again, “I don’t have time to go diving in that ocean of yours to find your darkest secrets.”
“I’m missing my math exam,” I said.
“Forgive me for standing in the way of your education,” she said with mock hurt, “But I thought you wanted to hear what I have to say?”
“I do,” I snarled and it sounded just like a large dog, “Get on with it!”
Suddenly the air around me began to get really heavy…and really cold. It was sort of hard to breathe. What the hell was she doing?
“You’re mother did not die in some silly car crash, Dear Heart,” the old woman said and her face was like a shimmering ivory skull with burning blue eyes, “She died of a broken heart.”
My breath caught in my lungs, “What?”
“The spell in which I laid upon my Granddaughter,” she said, “Is a curse upon all who came from her womb and her daughter’s wombs.”
I remembered the frightening spell from my dream…her memory…whatever.
“You’re father was human and extremely handsome,” her airy voice whispered, “He sacrificed himself to the Goddess in order for your mother to live and give birth to you.”
“What,” I asked in horror as a vision of a handsome man came to my mind…and I saw him plunge a silver dagger into his breast. He fell across a great stone altar and his blood flowed and dripped down the sides.
“His love for her freed her from dying,” she said, “So she could give birth to you.”
I didn’t understand.
“She could not bear the thought of dying,” she said, “So she begged him to spare her from such a fate.”
Tears were starting to form in my eyes.
“He loved your mother so much,” she said and leaned back to get more comfortable, “That he took his own life to save her from the curse of the Blue Moon.”
“Why would she die,” I asked with a shaken voice.
“That’s the beauty of my curse, Dear Heart,” she smiled, “The one who truly loves you must sacrifice themselves unto the Goddess before the moon turns blue…or else you will become the silver dust that litters the surface of her jewel.”
“Loneliness,” I whispered, “Heart colder than ice.”
“She hid her grief from you behind a beautiful smile,” she said and leaned forward, “And her heart became cold and icy…until it shattered in her breast.”
I suddenly felt bile rising in my throat and she laughed.
“Your stepfather was a drunken fool,” she cackled, “But very amusing with his antics over you.”
My fingers suddenly shifted and grew into long razor sharp talons. I flexed them and without thinking made a swipe at her. She moved as if she were made of mist and cackled.
She was suddenly on top of me and pinning me to the seat by the throat. She was old, but she was incredibly strong. Her grip was like iron.
“How I have waited for this moment, Ariel,” she smiled evilly as I kicked and thrashed under her, “I watched him as he beat your new body and I watched him as he raped you as well. Your heart is already like ice my dear little wolf. And pretty soon, I’ll get to watch you die all over again.”
Tears were streaming from my eyes and I could not breathe. She was crushing my windpipe and fucking enjoying the pain she was causing me.
She leaned down until the top of her nose was touching mine and my eyes widened in fear. Her voice was so warm and tender…and laced with evil.
“Beware the wolf in the forest at night,” she cackled with a haunting echo, “My Little Red Riding Hood.”

My eyes suddenly snapped open and I had no idea where I was. I sat up only to feel really strong hands suddenly holding me down.
“Let me go,” I screamed and started to kick my legs.
“Darrian,” Clark’s voice said as he fought with me, careful with his strength, “It’s just me, calm down.”
“What happened,” I rasped and looked around with wild eyes to see that the old bitch was no where in sight, “Where am I?”
“It’s okay,” he said and I began to calm down, “You were just having a bad dream.”
“Bad dream,” I asked looking into his scared green eyes.
“We were walking around the track,” he said with a small voice, “And you suddenly collapsed.”
“Collapsed,” I asked and could see the wetness in his eyes, “You mean?”
“Yeah,” he said, “You’re in the hospital.”
“Hospital,” I squeaked and fought with him again.
“Stop it,” he said holding me down, “You’re going to pull out your IV.”
I suddenly remembered that my scars were gone. My body was perfect. There was no deep dark secret on the surface…it was well hidden deep in the waters of my disturbed mind. Wait just a damn minute…I’m not normal!
Suddenly I panicked, “My blood?”
He smiled, “Taken care of.”
“You can let me go, Clark,” I said and he reluctantly did so, “I’m fine.”
“Could have fooled me,” Rue said landing at the foot of the bed, “You smacked that pretty head really hard when you said hello to Mr. Ground.”
That was when I noticed I had a bandage wrapped around my head. Now I looked even more like a freak. If I ever see that ugly, wrinkled, toad faced bitch again…I’m going to fucking scratch her eyes out!
Wait! I had collapsed on the track. That means I did not go to Swan’s…Kwan’s office. Had it all been just a dream? It had been so vivid and everything about my parents? Had that all just been something my warped mind cooked up to…fuck with me even more?
“I was so scared,” Clark said as he held one of my hands in his, “You had stopped breathing.”
“What,” I asked.
“You did,” Rue said, “It was like you were just gone.”
“It’s a good think Chloe made me take that CPR class with her,” Clark smiled trying to lighten my mood and then asked, “Darrian?”
Oh my god! Clark had given me mouth to mouth! His lips had been on mine! Oh my god! Oh my god! Oh my god! He had…kissed me…sort of…kind of…maybe! Oh my god! Oh my god! Oh my god!
“You’re really red,” Clark said starting to panic and got to his feet, “And your heart’s racing…should I get a nurse?”
“No,” I wheezed trying to calm myself down, “I’m fine.”
“I swear,” Rue said giggling as if being tickled, “This boy cracks me up when he’s all flustered.”
“Are you sure,” Clark asked suddenly pouring me a glass of water, “How about you drink this?”
I did. It helped to cool me down. Just the thought of that mouth breathing life back into me…it made me so…warm.
“Mom and Dad are with the doctor right now,” Clark said, “The doctor thinks that the stress of having to deal with the deaths of your stepfamily brought this on.”
If he only knew. Doctor would shit a brick.
“Maybe,” I lied and smiled warmly at him, “I don’t want to be here, Clark.”
“Home,” he asked, “You want to go home.”
Tears suddenly came to my eyes without so much as a warning and they spilled down my cheeks, “I don’t have a home, Clark.”
“Oh, shit,” he said, and quickly covered his mouth, and then hugged me, “I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to make you cry.”
I leaned into his warm embrace and saw my dad dead on a stone altar, my mother lying shattered in the falling cherry blossoms that were the color of blood. They had both died because of that evil, vindictive, bitch. My father died for my mother so that she and I could live. She had died of a broken heart for begging him to do so.
“Clark,” I whispered, “Why do you care so much about me?”
He breathed into my neck and gently placed a chaste kiss there. Tears spilled from my eyes. Why had he done that? He did not love me. He has only known me for a few days.
“Beware the wolf in the forest at night,” that bitches’ scary voice echoed, “My Little Red Riding Hood.”
Holy shit! Was I that red headed woman? Oh, hell to the nah!
“Darrian,” the doctor said coming through the door followed by the elder Kent’s, “How are we doing this evening?”
