Mac’s Apartment
Georgetown, Wash. D.C.
Saturday, December 28, 2002.
6:00am.
Mac gets up and slips on her slippers, and robe. She heads for the kitchen to start coffee, but she finds that Mrs. Madison has beaten her to it.
“Good morning, Sarah.”
“Morning Grams,” she says in a suddenly Chloe type voice.
“So, what time did your fiancé finally get you home last night?”
“A little after midnight when my coach became a pumpkin again.”
“Was Chloe still up when you got home?”
“Yes, that stinker interrupted Harm and my saying good night time.”
“I trust there wasn’t many good nights being said then?”
Mac blushes, pours herself a cup of coffee, and leans against her kitchen counter.
“You shouldn’t have let her stay up for me.”
“She’ll be fine. No harm done. She’ll sleep on the plane home, and give me some peace and quiet.”
“Oh all right. I’ve got to get Princess Chloe up soon. I’ve got some things to give you both and you’re definitely going to have to repack.”
“Just how big are these gifts?”
“You’ll see.”
The phone rings and Mac scrambles to find the portable. She didn’t find it in time because Chloe has it in her hand.
“Hello?”
“Good morning Princess Sunshine,” Harm says in Chloe’s ear.
“Morning Harm.”
“Is Mac up yet?”
“Um yeah, I think so. Her side of the bed is cold.”
“Princess, could you go find her for me?”
“Nope, it’s really warm and cozy in this bed.”
“I promise I’ll make it worth your while.”
“Oh all right. Take me to see X-Men 2 on opening day and you have a deal.”
“Okay, and I’ll throw in the plane ticket here.”
“It’s a deal.”
Harm hears rustling in the phone as Chloe puts her robe and slippers on.
“Hey Mac, it’s Prince Charming,” Chloe says landing her the phone.
Harm laughs to himself.
“Good morning, Flyboy. What can I get you?”
“Good morning, my Snow Queen. I would like 2 eggs over easy and a side helping of you, with whipped cream and chocolate syrup.”
Mac instantly turns 16 shades of red.
“I can’t get you that. Is there anything else?”
“How about you tell me when to come over and I’ll spring for lunch for four.”
“Mmm. Sounds good. The flight’s at three so, come about noon.”
“I’d like to come for you now but I’m still in my warm bed, and I don’t need that kind of a mess.”
“Red light Harm,” she says, can hear Harm groaning, and Mac hangs up.
“What did Harm want,” asks Chloe.
“He’s taking us all out for lunch about noon or so, so that gives us enough time to pack and unpack.”
“Oh cool! Last one to… Mac’sbathroomisarottensister,” Chloe challenges, running her words together as she runs off to Mac’s bathroom.
“You going to chase her?”
“No way, I’m going to go start breakfast.”
Harm’s Loft Apartment
North of Union Station, Wash. D.C.
6:30 am.
Harm finally gets up out of bed and turns up the thermostat as best he can before putting on sweats. He begins to exercise in his apartment to keep warm. Doing sit-ups and push-ups as if they are the norm for the day. He starts the coffee machine before heading into the bathroom to shower. A fresh set of warm clothes, a cup of fresh coffee, and now he’s thinking up things to keep him busy until he has to leave to pick up his lunch guests. He finishes a second cup before tackling his luggage and purchases all over the sofa and chairs. He sits on the end of his bed thinking of the strawberries he bought. They would have to be used up tonight before they start to turn. Harm starts to form a plan for a romantic evening at Mac’s place.
Mac’s Apartment
Georgetown, Wash. D.C.
7:00am.
“Come on Chloe, don’t use all the hot water. I’ve got someone out here I’d like you to meet.”
“But I already know Harm,” Chloe says as she opens the door to a Cub Condo Hugger, carefully and pulls out an elephant dressed in Marine Camouflage, “Ooh Mac! What’s its name?”
“Well look at the birth certificate silly.”
“This is Sarah Chloe MacKenzie. Born December, twenty seventh, two thousand and two. Made by Sarah MacKenzie for her little sister Chloe. Oh Mac, I love her!”
“I got her because I don’t want you to forget me. She has a special wish in her heart just for you.”
“What does it say?”
“It won’t come true, if I tell you.”
Mac gives Chloe’s grandmother a lavender bath set; it’s her favorite scent. Chloe runs off with Sarah Chloe. She leaves her on the bed and grabs one of her Cub Condo Huggers, the one with the M on it.
“Here Mac, this is for you,” Chloe hands Mac the box.
Mac opens the box and pulls out a floppy pony like the one she made. It is wearing a cute pair of cut off jeans, a red tie up top. It looked like Chloe dressed it up like Daisy Duke.
“She’s dressed like me. Her name is…”
“Don’t tell me,” Mac says pulling out the birth certificate, “Wildfire Chloe Madison. I like it. She’s adorable.”
“Hold on, let me get my camera,” says Mrs. Madison.
Mac runs off to the bathroom and does up her make up for the picture. Chloe goes back to the guest room for Sarah Chloe. They all gather back in the bedroom. Mac and Chloe hop on her bed with their animals in their laps.
“Ok you two, get your sillies out and on three I’ll shoot.” Chloe moves a hair that fell out in between her eyes and Mac fluffs her hair.
“One, two, three, and click,” says Grandma Madison, as she takes the shot, “Let me take one more. It’s the last shot of the roll. We could put them in and have them done before we have to take off.”
“Good idea. You don’t want the film ruined in the X-ray machine at the airport. And I want a copy,” says Mac.
“Ok, now put your sillies back in. This is a crazy shot,” Chloe messed up her hair, and she and Mac do a half-hearted Charlie’s Angels pose, “Now hold. One, two, three… Click.”
At the last second before Mrs. Madison took the picture, both Mac and Chloe turned their heads to smile at the camera. After the shot, all three were laughing so hard. Mac’s sides hurt.
“This is also for you,” Mac says handing Chloe a specially put together bath set almost like the one she gave to her grandmother.
“Oh cool Mac.”
“It’s got lots of bath oils in cool shapes I thought you would like. Each of them has a different scent.”
“This is so rad Mac. Thanks!” Chloe jumps herself into Mac’s arms.
“We better go get repacked,” says Mrs. Madison, “But first I’ll go reheat Chloe’s breakfast.”
Mac takes over her bathroom again and slips into her shower, thankful that the pipes still seem to be working the hot water through. She dresses in layers and cleans up her messy bed, while Chloe practically inhales her breakfast.
Mac’s Apartment
Georgetown, Wash. D.C.
11:00am.
Mac, Chloe, and Mrs. Madison are all sitting around her living room thinking up plans of what Mac’s dream wedding should be like, when the phone rings.
“Hey Mac, it’s me. I’m on the road. I decided to leave a little early because of the snow. See you in a half hour.”
“Be careful Harm, see you soon, love you Flyboy.”
“Love you too, Ninja Girl.”
“Harm’s on his way. Let’s go make ourselves up.”
Mac starts her inner clock to count down the minutes it would take Harm to get to her place. When the half hour is up, Mac begins to pace, hoping her Flyboy hasn’t gotten in an accident. She starts her inner clock to start counting the minutes he is late. She knows that even though he is going to be late she could forgive him just about anything. Chloe pops in Cinderella in the VCR and sits to watch with her grandmother, while Mac paces.
“Sarah, I’m sure he’s fine. He probably got stuck in traffic. He’ll be here.”
“I know, I guess you could say my stomach that is making me pace,” Mac says as she sits down on the corner of the sofa.
Suddenly, there’s a knock on the door and instantly Mac has her hand on the cold knob. She stops a moment to breath and then she opens the door to Nannook of the North. Harm is so bundled up in his parka; Mac can barely make him out.
“Hi Mac, can I come in?”
“Harm,” Mac asks a little dumbstruck.
“Yeah sure Harm,” comes from Chloe.
Absently, Mac shuts the door and snaps out of it.
“Hey Flyboy, what took you so long?”
“Mac’s been pacing,” proudly states Chloe.
“Chloe!”
“Sorry Mac.”
“I got stuck behind a snow plow. Anyway, are you ladies ready to go?”
“We’re starved,” Chloe says.
“I second that motion,” says Mac.
“I’ll help carry luggage if you all want to climb into the SUV. I’ve had the heater on all the way here so the heat should still be in the vehicle.”
“Ok, we’ll take the keys and get in,” says Mrs. Madison.
“Meet you there,” says Harm.
Chloe and her grandmother leave the apartment looking as dressed up as Harm looked when he came in the apartment.
“I think we’re alone now, there doesn’t seem to be any one around,” says Harm, reciting an old song lyric from I Think We’re Alone Now, by Tommy James & The Shondells.
“I think we’re alone now. The beating of our hearts is the only sound,” Mac continues, in perfect sync with the next lyric.
Harm leans down and kisses her warm smooth lips, and she sweetly returns the kiss.
“I thought you said you were starving?”
“I am, but not entirely for food. I missed you.”
“I missed you too. Now, let’s get going before they send out a search party.”
Mac and Harm gather all the luggage and head down to Harm’s SUV. Harm leaves Mac to pack the back since she did such a good job with his car. Harm gets in and quickly gets the heater running. Soon Mac hops in and Harm gets the show on the road.
“So where are you taking us Harm,” asks Chloe.
“How about I surprise you?”
“Well, since you want to do it that way, we want to stop off and drop off this roll of film. We can pick it up on the way to the airport after lunch,” says Mrs. Madison as she hands Mac the used canister with the roll inside.
“We can do that,” Harm says as he changes a lane.
True to his word, they stop and drop off the film at a developer and go on to lunch.

12:00pm.
“We’re here. Wow Harm, I’ve never been here before. This is cool.”
“I’m impressed Flyboy. I thought you wouldn’t come to one of these because they serve my kind of food.”
“I like the Natural Veggie Burger they have.”
“I’ve never been to one of these back home,” says Mrs. Madison.
Harm skips the appetizers the ladies order, opting for a salad. The Jumbo Combo the ladies ordered had handmade onion rings, chicken wings, potato skins, Santa Fe spring rolls, Tupelo chicken, and served with five different sauces. After that Harm ordered his Natural Veggie Burger. A gardenburger patty made of garden vegetables, rice, cheese, and spices that come on a freshly toasted bun with alfalfa sprouts, tomato, onion, lettuce, and Cajun mustard mayonnaise. It also comes with cole slaw and baked potato. Mac surprises Harm by joining in with Mrs. Madison in ordering an original BLT. No real meat Harm could complain about. She was sure he’d bug her about the artery clogging food later along with the dead pig she ate. Chloe goes all out and does the exact opposite of what Mac ordered. She even surprises Harm for once. She ordered a Classic Bacon Cheeseburger, with a fresh U.S.D.A. beef burger, grilled with American melted cheese, topped with crisp bacon and it comes on a toasted bun.
“I see you have her trained Mac,” says Harm as he smirks at Mac.
“Why of course, she’s my little sister and I want to teach her the finer points of enjoying a burger. I mean, come on Harm. It’s not like she gets them at home all the time.”
“Yeah, and besides. I made the cross country team at school, so a girl’s gotta eat to get energy,” says Chloe.
“Chloe! You didn’t tell me that, congrats little sister,” says Mac giving her a half hug at the table.
“Congratulations Chloe,” says Harm.
“Good, now I can stop holding that secret now that the cat’s out of the bag. She made me pinkie-swear not to tell you Mac,” says Mrs. Madison.

They quickly stop for the film and Mac grabs her copies. Everyone says their good-byes inside the SUV. Harm gets their luggage out of the back, Mac, Chloe, Mrs. Madison hug. Then they headed into the terminal so that Harm wouldn’t get in trouble for parking by the pol Mac Mac waves until they go into the terminal and then Harm fully pulls away from the curb as he spots a cop coming up to tell him to move his SUV.
“It’s sad we can’t see them to the gate anymore,” says Mac as she buckles her seat belt.
“Yeah, I agree Mac.”
Harm and Mac drive quietly for a while before Harm gets an idea.
“So Mac, now what?”
“Your place or mine Flyboy?”
