Chapter 12
(In the afternoon Morgan and Jack headed to Irving Hall to talk to Medda about using her place
for the newsie rally. Jack and Morgan walked in and were greeted by Tony.)
Jack: Is Medda busy?
Tony: She always has time for you Jack, come on.
(Tony led them to where Medda was sitting at a table writing something, she tapped her pencil on the
table as if in beat. Tony walked up to Medda)
Tony: Jack and Morgan are here to see you my lady.
(Medda put down the pencil and got up from her chair, she came over smiling)
Medda: What brings you here Jack darling?
Jack: We wanted to talk to you about using Irving Hall for a newsie rally, we want to get all
of the newsies of New York together for the strike.
Medda: Oh no, I rely on the papers to give me good reviews for my show and if I don't good good
reviews, then business goes bad and this swedish meadowlark would be on the streets. I support your
cause, but this is a theatre of art, not a union.
Morgan: What are you afraid of.
Medda: The newspapers could print lies about me and ruin my career, they can do that and then I
would have to leave and start over somewhere else.
Morgan: You're scared of them, that's what you are, but the truth always wins out. We can pay you
money Medda, we took up a collection and we can even charge for the night.
Medda: It's not the money, it's the fact that I can get ruined.
Jack: You're scared of them, well you shouldn't be, because in the end the newsies will win and the
big shot papers will learn not the mess with us.
(Morgan held out her hand, she opened it up and there in her hand was a bunch of dollar bills)
Morgan: This is 6 dollars so far, if you need more, we can alway take up a collection at the door the
night of the newsie rally.
Medda: Ok, you can use my place, but only on monday night when we're closed, ok?
Morgan: Thanks Medda, you won't regret it.
Medda: With that settled, I have to get back to work.
(Morgan and Jack watched Medda leave)
Jack: Now all we have to do is tell the others and spread the word that this coming monday is the newsie
rally.
Morgan: Shouldn't be hard Jack.
(Morgan and Jack left Irving Hall and headed back to the square to let the others know about when they
can use Irving Hall. Later that night Jack and Jeffrey headed into the Lodging House, newsies were making handmade signs for the strike. It didn't take long for Snyder to show up and the newsies blocked him for
seeing Jack, by pushing him behind them. Snyder found a flyer that was printed up and read it, trying not
to be too obvious about it, he noticed the registry and picked it up, he thumbed through it looking for
Jack Kelly's name when Kloppman took it from him)
Kloppman: Can I help you?
Snyder: I'm looking for a Jack Kelly, I was told he was staying here, he's an escapee from the refuge and dangerous.
Kloppman: Never heard of him.
Snipeshooter: Unusual name for these parts.
Race: Yeah, he was here, but he put an egg in his shoe and beat it.
(The newsies started to laugh hard and Kloppman hushed them)
(Nobody spoke up, until Race walked up to Snyder and put the tin can under his nose)
Race: Give to the newsie strike fund.
(Snyder pulled out a coin and drop it in and then left. Jack and Jeffrey both had snuck out of the lodging house about 5 minutes before without Snyder knowing and were headed to the Jacobs.)
Jeffrey: What was that all about Jack?
Jack: Nothing, come on.
Jeffrey: You escaped from the refuge?
Jack: Yeah, it was great actually.
Jeffrey: It's a good thing we were able to sneak out.
(Once at the Jacobs, they climb up to the fire escape quietly so they wouldn't wake anybody up. Jeffrey
looked in and noticed how quiet it was, he tried to get comfortable on the fire escape. Jack smiled and
then they started to talk in a whisper)
Jack: Sorry about that Jeffrey, you know you could of stayed at the lodging house, he wasn't looking for
you.
Jeffrey: No, it's ok, besides this isn't the first time I had to deal with something like this.
Jack: So you and Morgan travel alot?
Jeffrey: You could say that.
Jack: Well at least it's a nice warm night out tonight.
Jeffrey: And it's not raining.
Jack: Yeah, why we get some sleep.
(Jeffrey tried again to get comfortable, he finally leaned against the railing and closed his eyes, he
tried not to think of Morgan who was only alittle ways from him in the apartment and fell asleep. Jack
closed his eyes, it took him awhile, but sleep finally came.)
