Chapter 12 -- We Did The Right Thing . . . Right?

They put actions to words, and in three days, they had everything arranged. Calleigh and Alexx helped them set up the room, and when the day came to transfer Ryan from the hospital, while it wasn’t exactly a party, it wasn’t as somber as it could have been.

“Welcome home, Ryan,” Calleigh said, somewhat cheerfully as she placed his suitcase on the bed, and Alexx smiled as he stood beside the bed, and though he didn’t acknowledge anything that was said or done, both she and Calleigh were determined not to let that mar how good it felt to have him where they knew he was going to be safe and well treated.

“These guys’ll take good care of you, Baby, and if you need anything, you just let them know.” She told him, trying desperately to at least pretend that things were even slightly normal, and she gave him a quick hug. Calleigh pecked him on the cheek, and with encouraging touches to Eric and H’s arms, the two of them left the three men alone.

“So,” Eric looked at H as they stood in the livingroom. “Now what do we do?”

“Go in and unpack, I guess,” H answered, his eyes troubled, and together the two men entered the room, and looked at Ryan for a moment.

“Damn, H,” Eric said, and he stood in front of Ryan’s empty eyes. Eric slowly traced a small line from Ryan's eyebrow down his cheek, and to his mouth, and his voice trembled. “How can someone do something like this to someone. I mean, I know how it was done, but . . . I just can’t believe it. Gods, H, they hurt him so badly. Maybe, maybe it would have been better if they’d just killed him.”

“Don’t say that, Eric,” H stood next to them, took Eric into his arms, and rested the dark head on his red one. “Don’t ever say that, Eric. We’ll get him through this, and we’ll get through this, but we couldn’t do anything but bury him if they’d killed him. And . . .” his control finally broke, and he suddenly buried his face in Eric’s hair. “And I couldn’t take that. Not . . . not again,” Eric wrapped the older man in his arms, and H buried his face in Eric’s shoulder, as he clung to the younger man.

“I’m sorry, H,” he said. “You . . . you’ve been so strong, and here I am, leaning on you again.”

“They made him a whore, Eric,” Once H started to let go, he couldn’t stop, and he trembled in Eric’s arms. “I watched it all, every last DVD, so I could help him, and here I am, and I can’t help him. What I saw, what he’s gone through . . . the swamp, Eric,” tears slipped from his eyes, and Eric swallowed as the scene in the swamp played in his mind as well, and he couldn’t keep the tears from his eyes.

“They called him Whore, Eric. They took his name, his identity, everything about him that made him what he was. What the hell gave me the right to think I could help him after all that?” H’s voice trembled, and a slight movement from the bed made Eric look up. He started, and saw that Ryan’s eyes were on him, and that there was an intelligence in them that hadn’t been there before.
