Right On the Borderline

************************************

The first thought that Dean had when he woke up was, ‘Where’s Sam?’ That thought was quickly followed by, ‘Why the hell is it so bright in here?’

He found the answer to his latter question as soon as he turned his head and saw the most brilliant sun rise that he had ever seen shining in through the window and directly into his eyes. Dean groaned in protest and turned his head away.

Sam was no where to be found but there was an empty chair next to the bed and a half filled glass sitting on the side table. Dean sighed a little in disappointment and tried to reach for the covers only to discover that someone had bound his left arm across his chest with bandages. He squeezed his left hand into a fist experimentally and his vision dimmed a little around the edges. When it finally cleared he told himself that he was never going to do that again.

His second attempt at getting out of bed was much more successful. This time, instead of feeling like his whole body was floating away, he just felt a little nauseous. He even managed to keep his feet under him as he made his way to the door.

There was no one in the hallway but he could hear raised voices coming from what he thought he remembered was the kitchen. Unfortunately his brain was working off from twenty year old memories and he couldn’t be certain. But then again, what did he have to lose?

He slowly made his way along the wall, making sure to keep his right side braced at all times just in case his body decided to stop cooperating. When he finally reached the door he stopped to catch his breath. His shoulder was throbbing and his chest felt like he had just run a marathon, but none of that mattered the moment that he heard Sam’s voice carry through the crack under the door.

He used his remaining strength to push himself upright and forward. He stumbled through the doorway rather clumsily and caught himself on the table. A deep silence had settled as soon as he had pushed against the door and now he knew why. Jonas was looking at him like he had grown five heads overnight and Sam looked so pale that Dean was afraid he might faint.

Now that Dean was here he didn’t know what to say so he settled with a quiet “Hey” and a tight smile. That seemed to be enough because before he could brace himself Sam was wrapping his right arm around Dean’s neck and throwing his left arm around his back and squeezing as tightly as he could. Dean would have protested but it felt so incredible that he simply hugged him back as well as he could with one arm. When Sam finally broke away he leaned back enough to look Dean in the eye and give him the biggest smile that Dean had seen in years. Dean smiled back openly.

For a minute Sam looked like he was going to say something, but as quickly as he opened his mouth he closed it again. For a minute Sam looked like he was giving something some serious thought because his brow furrowed sweetly and Dean couldn’t help but chuckle. After another few seconds Sam seemed to make up his mind though and he leaned in close. Dean’s breath caught. Sam’s mouth was centimeters away and all Dean could think was ‘Please.’

Suddenly, Dean heard Jonas clearing his throat loudly behind them and he jumped in surprise. Sam stiffened and sighed. He turned his head toward Jonas and seemed to communicate something silently before he faced Dean again and closed his eyes, leaning his forehead against Dean’s. Their noses brushed against each other gently. Dean took a deep breath and closed his eyes as well. For a minute all Dean could think about was how Sam smelled. It was like a mixture of dirt, water, blood and sweat. He smelled like home.

Dean heard some shuffling over Sam’s shoulder and heard Jonas mumble a quick “I’ll give you boys a few minutes alone” before the door on the other side of the room opened and closed. Dean wondered briefly where he was going before he felt Sam’s lips against his own and all other thoughts left his head.

**************************************

Sam’s kiss was unlike anything that he had ever experienced before. It was chaste and soft one minute and the next minute it felt like Sam was trying to draw his soul out through his lips. At some point in time Sam’s hands had magically appeared in Dean’s hair and at the moment they were performing a complex combination of massaging and gripping that Dean couldn’t say he wasn’t thoroughly enjoying.

What he wasn’t enjoying though was his complete inability to participate fully in the kiss. As much as Sam didn’t seem to mind taking control of the situation Dean was feeling genuinely frustrated as he was forced to keep his shoulder straight inside the confines of the bandages.

Eventually he couldn’t take it anymore and he let out an irritated growl. Sam broke away and gave him a surprised look.

“Did you just growl at me?” Dean huffed quietly and made an elaborate gesture with his right arm to indicate his shoulder. Sam looked at it for a minute before he burst out laughing. When he finally stopped Dean was feeling less amused than he was before.

“You think this is funny?” Dean meant for it to sound affronted but the look in Sam’s eyes was one of shock and horror. “I’m sorry Sammy, that’s not what I meant…” Dean reached out with his right arm and hooked it around Sam’s back. Sam resisted at first before he fell against Dean and gripped him tight again.

“I thought you were dead Dean.” Sam’s voice was soft and a little bit broken. Dean squeezed him tighter.

“It’s alright Sam. I’m not going anywhere. I’m right here.” He pulled back a little and tried to catch Sam’s eyes, but Sam seemed keen on avoiding them for the moment. “Hey, look at me Sammy…” The desperation in Dean’s tone caught Sam’s attention. Dean didn’t comment on the wetness that Sam’s eyes had taken on. “I’m right here.”

Sam nodded and smiled a little before giving him another hug. The side door of the kitchen slid open slowly and both boys pulled reluctantly apart. Jonas looked hesitant but when he noticed that the boys weren’t hugging anymore he crossed the kitchen and headed to the sink. After he poured himself a glass of water he faced the boys head on.

“So, you boys think you’re up for telling me just what the hell happened to you?” Jonas took another sip of water while Sam looked to Dean for acceptance. Dean nodded slowly and made to sit down at the kitchen table. Before he could blink though Sam was behind him pulling out his chair. Dean raised his eyebrow and looked incredulous and Sam just shrugged. Jonas took another sip of water and watched them both a little more closely.

***********************************

“Look, honestly, I don’t know what the hell happened. One minute I had the gun and the next minute I was getting shot. After that it gets a little fuzzy.” Dean sat back angrily and winced as his back connected with the chair.

“Alright, what about you Sam, what do you remember?” Jonas turned toward Sam and crossed his arms over his chest.

“I told you already…when I got there the door was wide open and the circle had already been drawn. I just picked up the book that Dean had dropped and finished the ritual.”

“And what happened when you finished?” Jonas knew the boys had been through a lot, and judging by the color of Dean’s skin he knew they still had a ways to go, but he also knew that hunting came first. That meant that he needed answers now just in case something else went wrong.

“I saw Dean. On the floor. He wasn’t moving.” Sam’s teeth were gritted and Jonas sighed in frustration.

“I meant what happened to the poltergeist. Did he vanish? Did he go up in a column of flame? What?” Jonas was sitting forward now and Sam was doing the same.

“Neither, he just kind of turned into a cloud of black smoke and disappeared through the floor. It was kind of weird actually.”

“A cloud of black smoke?” Jonas sounded alarmed. Dean sat forward in his seat as well now.

“Is that significant?” Dean’s eyes had narrowed and he was looking at Jonas suspiciously. Like Jonas had more information than he was letting on. It appeared that Sam had come to the same conclusion because he stood up and slammed his fists on the table. Half of the kitchen seemed to shake with the force of it.

“What aren’t you telling us Jonas?” They all knew the real question was ‘What didn’t you tell Dean before you sent him in there to almost get killed?’

Jonas took a deep breath. “Sit down boy. I didn’t know anything at the time that would have saved Dean any trouble. But black smoke…” Jonas trailed off for the minute and got a troubled look on his face. “Black smoke usually indicates Demons, not poltergeists.”

Dean snorted. “Demons? Are you kidding me?” Jonas just leveled a look at him. Dean swallowed convulsively. “It couldn’t have been a Demon, I saw that thing, it was definitely transparent.”

Jonas just shook his head and sighed. “Something isn’t right, that much I think we can agree on.” Sam and Dean both nodded.

“Maybe it was some kind of poltergeist we just haven’t seen before” Sam had taken his seat again and was rubbing his forehead slowly with his left hand.

“Yeah, maybe…” Jonas narrowed his eyes a little and Dean leaned forward as much as he could across the table.

“Hey Sammy, you alright?” Dean reached out and ran his hand lightly over Sam’s right knuckles.

“Yeah, I’m fine, I just…” Sam broke off abruptly and screwed his eyes shut in pain. Dean was out of his seat and around the kitchen table in seconds trying to keep Sam upright in his chair. Unfortunately, Sam was thrashing around a lot and Dean couldn’t keep him controlled with just one arm.

“Hey Jonas! Little help here!” Jonas managed to pull himself out of his surprised state enough to wrestle Sam back into his chair and he held him on the right while Dean tried to hold him on the left.

“Sam? Sam! Can you hear me?” Dean shook him a little but Sam couldn’t seem to hear him. Sam was holding his head like it was about to explode and groaning like someone was pressing a hot poked to the back of his eyeballs.

“What’s wrong with him?” Jonas grunted a little as Sam shifted too far to the right and elbowed him in the side.

Dean just held on to Sam tighter and said, “I think he’s having a vision…”
