Chapter 12

A/N: This was in response to one to Keith's review/questions.
*She stood waiting at the guard station, having been told that someone was coming up to meet her and give her the lay of the land.
‘What the hell have I gotten myself into,’ she thought, she was fresh out of the Archaeology PhD program at Oxford in England, she was used to trees and grass and ivy covered buildings, and now she was smack dab in the middle of an underground, top secret, military facility.
Hearing footsteps brought her out of her introspective daze, looking up she saw a solid man with salt and pepper hair and a mischievous gleam in his brown eyes.
“Dr. Black?” he asked.
“Becca,” she replied.
“I’m Colonel Jack O’Neill, I lead one of the SG teams and today I’m your welcoming committee. I have been given the honor of bringing you down to your in-briefing.” He said as he led the way to the elevator.
“SG Teams?” she asked.
“How much have they told you?” he said answering her question with a question (she really hated it when people did that).
“Not too much” she replied.
“Well it’s complicated so we’ll just wait till we get to the briefing room. Prepare to have everything you think you know blown out of the water.”
This just left her with more questions but she did not think she would get anything else out of him, so she just followed him the rest of the way in silence.
When they got to the briefing room, she was unimpressed by the standard issue boardroom table and chairs and the industrial beige walls.
She was however, impressed by the man sitting at the table directly across from her. His brown hair was cut no-nonsense short but suited him to a tee, he had wire rims much like her own, behind which were sky blue eyes, the kind you could drown in, eyes which were currently fixed on her own.
‘Down girl, I know it has suddenly gotten really warm in here but he is probably one of your bosses, and you have a boyfriend’ she mentally slapped herself.
Once she had snapped out of that she noticed the other two people in the room, a round bald man with an air of authority around him, and blond woman who managed to look smart, hard core, and feminine all at the same time, currently staring at Colonel O’Neill and smiling. Becca made a mental note to find out what kind of relationship those two had besides being colleagues.
“Welcome Dr. Black, I’m General George Hammond, base commander, this is Major Samantha Carter, doctor of astrophysics and Dr. Daniel Jackson our head archaeologist, they are both members of Colonel O’Neill’s team, SG-1 ”, both Sam and Daniel smiled and nodded at her.
“ I am sure you have a lot of questions, but before we get down to business and outline your duties, I would like to show you something.” Gen. Hammond said indicating that she should come around the table to the dry erase board on the other side.
She stood beside him facing the board and she felt his hand and Daniel’s hands on the small of her back, though she had no idea why.
The General reached over and pushed a button and the board slowly rose revealing a window.
She would not forget her first glimpse of what lay behind that window for the rest of her life; it stood two stories tall in what used to be a missile silo. It was a dark gray metallic ring covered with symbols that looked vaguely Egyptian, but because she was fluent in ancient Egyptian, she knew they were not. Running from the floor up and through the center was a ramp. It was for lack of a better work awesome. She tipped forward, her head bumping the glass, wanting desperately to get in to that room and touch it to make sure it was real.
“What is it?” she whispered reverently.
“We call it a Stargate.” It was the first time she had heard Daniel speak.

A couple of days later she was walking down the corridor trying to find her way back to her lab from lunch when she heard Sam’s voice and changed directions needing to ask her a question.
She knocked on the door to Sam’s lab and heard two voices call out “Just a minute!” from the other side.
She looked through the file she was holding, while she waited. Finally, Sam opened the door and let Becca in, her hair was a mess and her shirt was not buttoned right. Jack was also in the room and looked equally disheveled.
Becca felt her face flame with embarrassment, “I am so sorry Sam I had no idea!”
Sam looked over at Jack as she closed the door behind Becca.
“Becca, I suppose we need to tell you something but not many people know. This does not get discussed outside this room while we are on base okay?" She began.
"Jack and I have been in love for many years, but due to regulations, we never found a way to be together. Which, I must say is mostly my fault. I have never been much of a rule breaker, unlike someone who shall remain nameless." she cast a knowing glance in Jack's direction and he grinned sheepishly.
"Last year I got engaged and it was a wake-up call for both of us. I realized that I could never marry Pete because I am in love with Jack, and Jack decided to make a stand because seeing me with Pete was killing him. We decided to screw regulations, because we can’t deny what we mean to each other anymore. Gen. Hammond gives us his blessing while off duty, and while on duty he has a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy towards our relationship.”
“Why are you trusting me with this? You guys barely know me.” Becca replied.
“We all have a really good feeling about you Becca, we want you to feel like part of this dysfunctional family.” Jack answered.
Becca who was really missing her own family was pleased with that idea. She left having forgotten to ask her question.
Walking down the hall lost in her own thoughts she ran smack into Daniel, who put his hands on her shoulders to keep her from falling backwards.
“Sorry,” she mumbled with a sheepish grin, smiling seemed to be involuntary around him.
“That’s okay. Dr. Black, have you met Teal’c?” Daniel replied.
She had to crane her neck to get a good look at the massive Jaffa; she had never seen anyone like him before.
“No I haven’t, and please call me Becca, Dr. Black is my father.” She said extending her hand to Teal’c.
Daniel smiled at her and Teal’c gave her an elegant nod.
Becca woke up the next morning with a smile on her face.
