Author's Notes: Something I came up with, some time ago. A young witness stays at Charlie’s house to be given protection. She finds out about Charlie’s secret love for a special person.
“It’s freakin’ you out, isn’t it?””, Marissa says after she has noticed that Charlie has been staring at her file for quite a while.
“No... Why would it?”, Charlie stumbles. Marissa shoots him a knowing look. “Okay, yes, it’s been bothering me ever since I’ve noticed it.”
Marissa laughs, though her eyes show hints of sadness.
“Yeah, it’s actually not my idea. Josh came up with it when we had our first huge fight. He said it’s the easiest way to explain the difference between math and poetry. The difference between him and me.”
She continues scribbling some words in her exercise book.
“You miss him, hm?”, Charlie asks softly.
“Yes.” The answer comes quick and with a trembling voice. “But I know your brother will find him. I trust him.”
Charlie smiles encouragingly at her.
“You know, the difference is not that great. It’s all numbers. Two plus two equals four in math, two plus two equals five in poetry. You see? I think he wanted to show you that although you study two completely different subjects, in the end it’s all the same. Just numbers.”
Marissa’s eyes glitter at that and she hides her tears behind her long hair falling into her face now. Charlie doesn’t speak for a moment and gives her time to calm down again.
“Isn’t it the same with you and Don?”, Marissa suddenly says after some minutes has passed. “You two have different jobs and yet you fight for the same thing.”
“Yeah, we’ve discussed that subject once. He said we’re from different worlds.” Charlie pauses. “But what can I expect. We’re brothers, there won’t be any development in our relationship. We’ll always be Don and Charlie Eppes. Nothing more, nothing less, right?”
Charlie doesn’t even realize that he has spoken this out loud.
Marissa breathes out deeply.
“It was the same with me and Josh at the beginning, when we were still friends. No progress, status quo all the way through. But then we recognized one day that we miss the presence of each other, my skin suddenly prickled under his touch, the way he looked at me was...unusual.”
Charlie looks at her, confused.
“I think you should have it.”, Marissa announces and starts carefully pulling off the sticker from her file.
“No... I can’t take it. It’s yours! What about Josh?”
“He’ll understand.”, Marissa answers and holds the sticker out to Charlie.
“But why?”, Charlie asks, his expression almost looks sad and depressed, helpless.
“So it will remind you that also if two things seem different, in the end they’re all the same. They’re just numbers.”
