chapter 11
Chapter 11.
(Up in the high building Mr. Pulitzer is not happy, he ends up throwing things around. He demands
that someone do something about the newsie strike. He talks to Weasley and they decide it's time
to bring in the big boys to stop the strike, even if it means that the newsies will be beaten up
to scare them from continuing with the strike.
The newsies have a diffferent idea as they all block the scabs from leaving the area.
All is going well. Morgan stands next to David, Les and Jack as she blocks the way.
Jack of course looks over a Jeffrey on the other side and nods. So far they had gotten most of thescabs to join them. Until someone Morgan recognizes as Race shouts out)
Race: Oh no, it's a trick Jack, run for it!
(a bunch of mean men with clubs and chains head to the newsies.
Jack pushed Morgan to the side as one of the burly men goes after her. Morgan ducks as another one goes
after her. Fights break out as the burly men don't care that they are kids.
The newsies are fighting the best they can as they hold off the burly men as best as they can. Jack and
the other newsies get a few punches, but it seems hopeless, when the men have clubs and chains and the
newsies have nothing to fight with, until Jack notices that alot of the men are wincing in pain.
Jack looks up to see Spot Conlon with his slingshot and his Brooklyn Newsies.
Denton, who is watching, starts to write in his notebook about it, he tries to help the newsies, but he's
held back to watch helpless)
Jack: Hey Spot, it's Spot!
Spot: Never fear, Brooklyn's here!
(With the newsies with the slingshots, the newsies overpower the men and drive them out. Everyone is
cheering and hollering, Morgan pulls Jeffrey to the side as the Newsies cheer.)
Denton: Hey guys, hold it! Smile boys!
(Denton had taken his camera out and shouted them to stand still. he took the shot of the Newsies just
as they had stood, even Les looked funny as he was squeezed inbetween two newsies. Morgan giggled at the
sight and looked at Jeffrey)
Morgan: We can't be in the picture Jeffrey.
Jeffrey: I know.
(After the shot was taken, Denton invited everyone to Tibby's to celebrate, everyone ate their fill
and waited for the new addition of the New York Sun to be printed with the newsie strike article and
picture. Morgan sat at a table with a bunch of newsies, occationally Jack would look at her, but then
would get distracted from celebrating. It didn't take long for Denton to come back with a few copies of
the paper.)
Denton: Here ya go.
Spot: Where's me picture, where's me picture?
Jack: Is that all you're thinking about?
(One is set down in front of Jack and he looks at it)
Mush: Hey there you are Jackie boy!
(Mush rubs his finger on Jack's face on the newspaper)
Jack: Will you get your finger off my face.
David: So you got us in the paper.
Denton: I just have to keep you in the news David, my paper is the only one writing about the strike.
David: Then we have to do something really big.
Jack: Yeah, show them that we aren't gonna go away.
Morgan: Hey how about a newsie rally Jack?
Jack: That sounds really good Morgan, get all the newsies of New York together, make it the biggiest blow
out that this town has ever seen.
Morgan: Yeah, but where?
Jack: I know just the place, I just have sweet talk a certain swedish meadowlark.
Morgan: Irving Hall would be the perfect place, it would hold alot of people, expecially newsies from
all over New York.
David: Think she'll let us have the rally there?
Jack: Sure.
(Everyone left late, alot of the newsies stuffed the leftovers in napkins and shoved them in their
pockets, even Morgan did that, Denton watched, but didn't say anything, he knew what it was like to
not know when you're next meal would be. Denton paid Tibby's for the food and soon everyone started
to leave. Jack and Morgan finally got some time alone together, they stood in the corner by the kitchen
and talked.)
Jack: Thanks for the idea about the Rally.
Morgan: It was nothing.
Jack: I was meaning to ask you something.
Morgan: What?
Jack: Well, will you come with me when I ask Medda about using Irving Hall for the newsie rally?
Morgan: Sure, I like her, she's very pretty and really nice.
Jack: Come on, I'll walk you back to the Jacobs.
David: It's ok, Jack, she can walk with Les and Me.
Morgan: See you tomorrow?
Jack: See you tomorrow, we have to ask Medda in the afternoon, so meet me at Irving Hall at noon.
Morgan: Ok, I'll be there.
(Morgan left with David and Les, she was quiet the whole time. Jeffrey walked back to the Lodging
House with the other newsies, so Jack headed there by himself, just with his thoughts his thoughts
were on Sante Fe and then to Morgan, but he also heard Jeffrey's voice in his head.
Morgan laid in the bed, she was the only one still awake, the throbbing in her shoulder finally going
away. She was glad when the bullet wound started to itch slightly. Morgan's thoughts drifted to Jack and
then to Jeffrey, she drifted to sleep with Jeffrey in her thoughts.
Jeffrey was awake when Jack came in, he looked at Jack and Jack looked at him, but they didn't say a word.
Jeffrey turned on his side and closed his eyes, he had to do something about Jack and Morgan, he just didn't know what. He was jeolous of Jack and alittle upset about Morgan, he had so many feeling for Morgan, his feeling ran deep, ever since they had given themselves to each other that night in the hotel room in
Liverpool 1961. This was the first time the ugly green monster crept up in him. Jeffrey finally let sleep
take him with Morgan on his thoughts and that night in the hotel.)
