Chapter 11 -- What Happens Now?

“It’s been a week,” H said, as they sat in their kitchen after work, and while they pushed their dinner around on their plates. “They want to release Ryan from the hospital,” he added as he dropped his fork with a clatter to his plate.

“Where’s he going to go?” Eric asked as he put his fork down too, pushed his plate back, leaned his elbows on the table and put his head in his hands.

“His family is in no position to take him as he is,” H answered. “The doctors want to put him in a mental hospital.”

“No!” Eric looked up, horrified. “We can’t let them do that to him! Not after everything he went through! Damn it, H, I can still see those scenes in my head. I didn’t even watch half of them, and I’m still having nightmares! We can’t let him be put away like he . . . like he doesn’t matter to anyone!”

“And what do you suggest we do?” H asked. “There aren’t that many options. While I tend to agree with you that the last thing he needs is to be separated from those who lo . . .” He stopped, looked down at the table, and swallowed. “Those who care for him, he does need special care, and round the clock care too, at least for a while.”

“H,” Eric looked down at the table top and played with the edge of his plate. “Even with the trip to Brazil, I’ve still got a lot of vacation time built up. Maybe, maybe for just a little while, we . . . we could bring him in here? I mean, we’ve got the extra room, and I could stay with him during the day, when you’re at work . . .”

“It’s funny you should say that,” H smiled sadly. “I was thinking that even with the trip to Brazil, I still have a lot of vacation time saved up. I was wondering how to bring up the fact that I wanted to bring him in here, too. You seem to have saved me the trouble.”

“So, we’re agreed then?” Eric smiled. “We’ll set up the spare room for him, bring him in here, and if you want to switch off days with me, then we won’t go through our vacation days quite so fast, and we can take care of him for as long as it takes.”

“I love you,” H smiled, and his entire face was lit for the first time since Ryan had been kidnapped.

“You can’t help it,” Eric chuckled. “Any more than I can help loving you.”

“Too true,” H said, and for the first time in weeks, they attacked their dinners with an appetite that was matched that night in bed.
