A way out?
Chapter: 11
Grissom’s head shot up in a panic as he woke.
Sara held him tightly as he groaned.
“Hey….ssh. It’s ok, I’m here.” She said softly, pulling his head back down to her chest, stroking his hair lightly. She had tried to sleep but hadn’t succeeded. She was content for that time just to hold him, and feel his steady breathing on her skin. Neither of them had a watch but she thought he’d been out for a couple of hours. Even though it seemed longer.
After a long silence Sara finally spoke. “What are we going to do?”
Grissom sighed. “I…..don’t know”.
“They are just getting started you know?” Sara chocked trying to hold back her tears.
Grissom looked up and then hung his head again. “I know,” he whispered. “but…I don’t know what to do…I..”
Sara shifted before he finished, gently pushing him up so she could stand. She leant him against the wall. She wasn’t defeated…. just yet.
“Stay there,” she requested.
Grissom frowned slightly and watched Sara as she began to walk around the room. She began feeling at the walls, trying to find something, anything. Some kind of escape.
“What are you doing?”
Then she came across the cabinet. She looked back at Grissom. “Trying to find a way out.”
She took a firm grip on the cabinet and pulled it away from the wall. Grissom noticed as her eyes lit up. He staggered to his feet.
“What? What did you find?”
She turned and looked at him, faint hope in her voice “A way out.”
Grissom came up behind her as she looked down at the small air vent in the wall. He eyed it closely.
“You could fit through there,” he said “If we could just get the cover off.”
Sara looked at him sharply, defeat in her face.
“What?”
“Forget it,” she shook her head.
“Why?”
“Because it’s too small. You will never get through there.”
Grissom put his good hand under her chin and lifted her head to him.
“But you can! You can get out, get help.”
Sara pulled away and folded her arms. “No!” She said firmly. “I’m not leaving you here. If I go and they find out, they’ll kill you!”
Then the screams came again, the alarming sound of Kate’s sexual activity booming through the walls.
Grissom felt his nose turn up and his stomach turn at the sound. “Look,” he said firmly now, “now’s our chance, and maybe our only chance to do this. They should be at it for a while.”
Sara still didn’t look convinced.
He took her hand and looked deep into her eyes. “Honey…this may be the only opportunity we get to get out of here.” He winced again as he hand began to throb once more. She could seen the distress on his face and the pain in his eyes. He needed help and she knew it.
She sighed. “Ok,” she whispered.
“You think you can get the cover off?” Grissom asked
Sara knelt and pressed on the vent cover. It didn’t move. She came across 4 tiny screws, one in each corner.
“Could use a screwdriver.”
“Sorry, I’m fresh out,” he tried to joke.
“Wai.” Sara said reaching to her neck, she unbuckled the collar that still hung around her neck. She held up the buckle “This should work,” gesturing to the clip part. She slipped it into one of the screws and it fit perfectly. She began to remove the screws as quickly as she could, Grissom watching on, gnawing on his bottom lip anxiously. Praying they had enough time. Sara pulled out the last screw and breathed deeply.
“Here goes.” She sat on the floor and placed her feet flat against the vent. She kicked it hard and it fell from the wall. Quickly getting to her feet she looked at Grissom. He tried to smile. He reached up and stroked her face. “Go baby,” he gestured his hand to the vent.
Again Sara hesitated, she still didn’t want to leave him.
“Go!” He demanded now.
Sara’s eyes began to fill as she leaned in and kissed him softly on the lips.
“I’ll be back. Don’t you dare give up on me Gil Grissom!”
“Never.”
He pushed her towards the vent and she got to her knees. She took one last look back and smiled the best she could. He returned the favour and watched her disappear. Praying she would get out and find help.
Sara found herself in a long dark metallic tunnel and with all the haste she could muster hurried down it hoping the end would soon appear.
Kate grinned, as she sat in nothing but a towel watching her monitors. “I knew you’d find it,” she chuckled.
Grissom sighed as he leaned back against the wall. Then he heard a slight humming noise. A kind of mechanical hissing. He looked around and then looked up. That’s when he saw it, nestled above a beam in the darkness of the ceiling. A camera! Oh god, they’d been watching all along. Grissom painfully got to his knees. Panic flooding through him.
“Sara!!!” He yelled. “Sara!! Come back! They know your in there!”
But it was too late. Sara was already out and walking down a long dark corridor at the other end of the house.
