Why Do You Read This Filth?
Paul sat in Zoe's room, on the edge of her bed. Zoe was lying on the floor, and both were flipping through the girly magazines she sometimes bought.
"Why do you read this filth?" Paul asked, pulling a face at one of the articles.
Zoe just smiled. "So we have something to bond over." Paul threw the magazine at her. "Actually, it's because they're funny. Listen to this one." She then read out a letter about a girl who had made out with her best friend (also female) while at a party with her boyfriend, and wanted to know if this made her bisexual.
Paul looked nonplussed. Zoe had to remind herself that he wasn't exactly up-to-date on things like this. She went back to reading, while Paul looked around for something to occupy himself. He then lay down on her bed and poked his head underneath it, looking for monsters, presumably. He found none. He did, however, find a shoebox filled with photos. He pulled them out and started looking through them.
Zoe looked up, noticing that he'd gone quiet. She saw the photos and smiled. They were all from her various birthdays. Anubis was in a few of them, always standing to one side. Except her first birthday - someone had snapped a shot of him holding her, with her little hands hitting his face, making him laugh. This was the photo Paul held. He raised his head, smiling at her.
"Y'know, he loved you right from the start. I remember when you were born - after he named you, he was wandering through the Kingdom, and not even I could shake his mood. Not that I didn't try, mind you."
Zoe laughed. Of course Paul would try. It was unthinkable for him not to annoy Anubis. Zoe moved to sit on the bed next to him, also sifting through the photos. They laughed at some of the pictures, while others Paul wanted to tear up. At the bottom, they came to a photo of her sixteenth party. It was after Anubis had brought her back, after their first kiss. The couple were sitting on the edge of the porch, legs dangling over the side, hands entwined. They hadn't noticed Natalie take the picture, but Zoe was grateful she had. It was her best birthday memory.
A thought crossed her mind. "Hey, Paul?"
He looked up at her. "Whassit?"
"When's Anubis' birthday?"
Paul blinked. "How should I know?"
Zoe shrugged. "Just thought you might. After all, you probably know him better than any of us."
Paul smirked at her. "Actually I think you know him the best. Certainly in the biblical sense."
Zoe grabbed her pillow and hit him with it, blushing madly. Trust Paul to think like that. Paul just grabbed the pillow and hit her back, before jumping off the bed. "Gotta go recharge. See you round, short-timer." He turned and walked through the wall, phasing back to the Old Kingdom as he did so.
Zoe held her pillow and thought. As far as she knew, Anubis didn't have a birthday. So, she should give him one. She smiled and stood up, mind racing. This was going to be fun.
