ch 11
When Grissom invited the crews to come to his town house, they were quite shocked. Grissom wasn’t the most social person but he assured them that they would be very upset if they refused his invitation.
Intrigued, they all agreed to attend.
Promptly at four PM, most of the Las Vegas Crime Lab was on the front step of Griss’s townhouse.
Greg stood on the doorstep waiting for Grissom to answer the door. “Why do you suppose he invited us here?”
“With Gil, who knows?” Catherine interjected. “Maybe he’s got a new bug and wants to show it off to us.”
Warrick and Nick laughed. “That would be typical Grissom.” They spoke in unison.
“Gil has been happier lately.” Brass added.
A smiling Grissom answered the door. “Wow, you are happy.” Catherine added.
“You will see why in a few minutes.” He said as he opened the door to let them in.
They all looked around. What had happened to Grissom’s townhouse? It was nicely decorated…. it looked like it was peppered with a woman’s touch, was that his secret? There were floral prints and candles everywhere. This was strange even for Grissom. They walked in and sat in the living room. Grissom disappeared.
They were conversing in the living room when they heard it…it was a baby’s cry.
They all shot shocked glances at each other.
“Was that what I think it was?” Nick asked.
Catherine looked at him. “You bet. He has some explaining to do.”
They all looked up to see Sara standing there in front of them and Grissom holding a baby in his arms. He smiled at them all. “I would like you to meet Jillian Sidle Grissom, my daughter.”
They were all stunned. That was the response he was expecting.
“What…When? How?” Catherine began.
“Before Sara left. She had Jillian in Frisco. I just found out myself.” Grissom stated.
“So you are back, Sara?” Nick asked.
“Yes.” She added softly.
“You coming back to work?” Greg asked.
“No. I’m gonna stay home with Jilly-bug.”
Again they looked at each other in disbelief and began to laugh.
“Let me guess, Gil’s nick name for the poor girl?” Brass asked.
Sara nodded. “I think it’s cute.”
“You would,” Catherine snickered.
Grissom was holding the baby cuddled against his chest. They were all amazed at how good he was with her. He was a natural, looked like he had been doing it forever.
Catherine’s pager went off. She looked to Warrick and Nick. “We have a 419, we gotta go.” She looked to Grissom and Sara, “Congrats guys.” They exchanged quick hugs and left.
Brass looked at Greg, “We had better be going too. Graveyard shift is short-staffed till Gil comes back.” Grissom showed them out. “It’s good to see you happy, Gil.” He said before exiting the house.
Sara looked at him, “I think we shocked them, what do you think?”
“I think you're right. I’m gonna go put the baby down.”
Sara nodded and went to sit on the couch. How did I do this without him before this?
He returned and joined Sara on the couch. “What are you thinking about?” He asked softly.
“How much I love you. How wonderful I feel right now.”
He smiled. “What’s on TV? Anything good?”
“Not sure. We could watch a movie.” She suggested.
“Sure, what do we want to watch? He asked.
“That new one I just bought would be fine. It’s on top of the player.”
He got up and put it in. He snuggled in next to her. “What is this?”
“Troy. It is about the Trojan War. Brad Pitt is in it. He plays Achilles.”
“Interesting,” He thought as he wrapped his arm around her.
“It is the story of the Achilles Heel, too. That’s what killed him.” She laughed
“If you are going to tell me about the movie, why should I watch it?” He asked her.
A little hurt she answered, “Fine, I won’t talk anymore.”
“Sara. I’m sorry. I’m just not used to watching movies with anyone else; it has always been just me.”
Sara smiled. “I will eventually get used to your quirks.” She kissed his cheek.
“I like this.” He said.
“What?” She asked.
“This. On the couch curled up with you watching a movie while our daughter sleeps.”
“I like that too.” She admitted.
He kissed her lips and settled down to watch the movie.
Sara fell asleep in his arms. He turned the movie off and carried her to the bedroom. He placed her on the bed and spread a blanket over her. He went to check on the baby. She was awake, cooing in her crib. He picked her up and rocked her in the rocking chair.
“Hey, Jilly-bug. What are you doing? Are you getting used to your new home?” He caressed the baby’s cheek. “Daddy has one more week with you and then he has to go back to work. He doesn’t want to go, but he has to work so that mommy can stay home with you.” He rocked her gently. “Are you hungry, sweetie? Do you want Daddy to get you a bottle? I bet you do. Come on, let’s walk to the kitchen.” He walked out and retrieved a bottle and heated it for the baby. He returned to the nursery to feed her.
“Can I ask you something, sweetie?” The baby was suckling on the bottle. He knew she couldn’t answer him, but he needed someone to talk to. “Do you think that if I ask your mommy to marry me she will?” The baby just suckled away, oblivious to what he was saying. She just wanted her bottle. He finished feeding the baby and changed her. He got her dressed and left to find Sara a ring. He left Sara a note.
Sara,
Me and Jilly-Bug went to the store to get something for supper. We didn’t want to wake you. We will be back soon.
Sleep my love.
Griss & Jilly.
Sara stirred in her sleep. She could have sworn that she heard Grissom talking to the baby and that he was talking to her about marriage. Must have been a dream. That is so unlike Grissom. Had to be a dream. Sara rolled over and went back to sleep.
Grissom, stroller and baby in tow, walked into the jewellery store. He looked at the engagement rings. None really jumped out at him. He kept looking until he spotted the perfect one. It was plain. Just three stones set on a white gold band. It was perfect.
“Have you decided on one sir?” The clerk asked.
“Yes, that one over there.” He said pointing to the ring he liked.
She passed it to him. “Is that to your liking?”
“Yes, do you have it in a six?”
“I will check,” She walked away and then quickly returned. “Yes sir, we do.”
“I would like it, please. Can I get it inscribed?”
“Sure. When do you need it done?”
“As soon as possible,”
“Our inscriber is still here, he could probably do it now.”
“That would be great.” He grinned. The baby began to coo. Grissom picked her up. “What do you think; will mommy like that one?” Jillian gargled. “Yeah, I think so too.”
The sales clerk was taking in the interaction with Grissom and the baby. She waited before she questioned him. “What would you like the inscription to say?”
“Oh right. I would like it to say, From Grissom.”
“Certainly sir, I will have that for you in a few minutes.”
Sara woke to a silent house. She got up and went to check on Jilly. She was gone. Sara began to panic. She went in search of Grissom. He was missing too. Her heart began to beat regularly again. Jilly must be with Grissom she concluded.
Walking to the kitchen she found the note. He is so thoughtful. She decided a shower and a nice outfit were in order. She picked out a nice low cut blouse that was form fitting and showed off her new curves. She paired it with a nice pair of black slacks. Proud of her choice she headed for the shower.
Grissom walked in the house with the baby on his hip and dinner in his arms. He heard the shower running. That gave him time to prepare. He put the baby in her bouncy chair on the table and got dinner ready. He had bought vegetarian Chinese, Sara’s favorite. He dished it out and anxiously waited for Sara. The ring was in his pocket. The shower stopped and so did his heart; he had to remember to breathe. He looked over at his now sleeping daughter and contemplated putting her down. He changed his mind. He wanted her here for this even though she was too young to know what was going on.
Sara emerged in her outfit. It hugged her in all the right places. Grissom couldn’t help but stare.
“You like?” She asked as she approached.
“Yes, very much,” He smiled at her.
“I figured since you were getting dinner, I would dress up for you.”
Her hair lay in waves framing her face. She looked sexy. He was fighting off his arousal. Not now, I need to get through dinner and this proposal first.
Sara sat down and began to eat. “Did you wear Jilly out?” She asked between bites.
“I guess so.” He stated. “Sara…” He began.
“Yes.”
“I need to ask you something.”
“All right.” She was slightly confused. Why is he stalling?
He reached for the small box in his pocket and placed it on the table. Sara spotted it and had to fight back the tears. It wasn’t a dream. He really is doing this.
“Sara…” He paused. “We’ve been through a lot together.” He paused again and opened the box retrieving the ring from its spot. “Would you do me the honor of being my wife?”
Sara was speechless save for the tears flowing down her face. She couldn’t find the words, she just nodded incessantly. She crawled across the table she reached and wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Yes.” She whispered in his ear. “Yes, I will marry you.”
He passed her the ring. “It’s inscribed.”
She turned it over to read it. ‘From Grissom.’ “Oh Griss, that is so sweet.” She kissed him intensely, showing him exactly how much she loved him.
Intrigued, they all agreed to attend.
