Chapter 11
Sara sat smiling sweetly at the man who’d sent her the flowers. It wasn’t that hard. Detective Michael Vartan was handsome with sharp angular features. Sara had been seeing her law enforcement colleague for nearly two months. He wasn’t as Greg described. He didn’t own his own tuxedo nor did he listen to opera, but he had taken her dancing and to a nice restaurant for dinner. She had hoped the flowers were from Gil. She was not surprised that they had not.
Michael was saying something about her eyes. She smiled wider trying to concentrate.

Sara was in the Red Bar waiting on Gil. He had called to say he was running late. Rather he’d called Rosalyn to deliver the message. Everyone was required to at least put their cell phones on vibrate, and Sara’s was in her purse.
The pleasant classical guitarist was playing something whimsical and romantic. A voice broke into her thoughts.
“Is he late?”
Sara turned to see a dark haired beauty with long lashes sipping a martini.
“Yes.”
“Is he always late?”
“Hardly ever.”
“Work?”
Sara nodded. “That’s all it could be.”
“It must be nice to that secure. To know that’s the only thing that would keep him.”
Sara thought for a full minute and then spoke. “It is.”
“How long have you been married?”
Sara waggled her ring finger. “I’m not.”
The other attractive brunette swept the olive off its skewer. “You aren’t? I usually can tell when someone is married. One of my dearest friends says I should have been an anthropologist.”
Sara moved a lime wedge around her glass. “You sound like my friend, Catherine.”
“Perhaps we are in the same business.”
“Maybe”
“So when are you getting married?”
“We aren’t.”
“Does he know that?”
“He’s not interested in marriage.”
“Are you?”
“Yes”
“Does he know that?”
“That I want to get married one day?”
“That you want to marry him.”
Sara started to defend herself but decided it wasn’t worth it. So she said nothing.
“Is there someone else?”
“I’ve been seeing a guy for a few months.”
“Is it serious?”
“I am not sure.”
“Does he know about the other man?”
“I think he is the other man.”
“Oh”
“So you come here for a little tryst with your lover. You don’t strike me as that kind of woman.”
“What kind of woman is that?”
“A woman that cheats on a guy that’s she’s serious about. I don’t think you are meeting the other man. I think he is the only man. Does your paramour have a deadline?”
“I have waited for a long time.”
“How much longer are you going to wait?”
“I don’t know. I don’t think much longer. I want a family.”
“I feel sorry for him. Sounds like he doesn’t know what’s good for him.”
“I think he is very satisfied with his life.”
“With you in it maybe. What will he do once you are gone?”
Rosalyn leaned over and whispered into Sara's left ear. Sara drained the last of her drink. She extended her hand. Brown eyes met brown eyes.
“It was nice to finally meet you, Heather.”
The woman who had been christened Marion at birth laughed happily. “And you, Sara.” Long eyelashes fluttered. “Do you want me to talk to him?”
Sara shook her head. “I think his mind is made up.”
“A lot of women would not have been so kind to me considering.”
“Thanks for the company.”
“You are most certainly welcome. I’ll say a little prayer for the two of you.”
“I would appreciate that.”
~~~~~
Sara was snuggled close to Gil. His strong voice soft and reverent. “Is he good to you?”
Sara watched his face for some reaction as she spoke. “Yes.”
“Good”
She saw something pass across his face. It vanished almost as immediately as it had come.
“Everyone thinks you sent the flowers. Well everyone except Sofia. You never did tell me what happened that night?”
“I didn’t? I think they we were doing so much only they were doing it outside.”
“We should try that.”
“They are a perfect example why we shouldn’t. They got locked out of the house and I had to look at my baby brother’s ass to see what kind of bug bites he had.”
Her hand made circles on his torso. “You like having him around.”
“It’s nice. I always wanted a brother or a sister.”
“Is he going to stay in Vegas?”
“I think so. Casinos want guys like him to work for them. He can keep doing contract work or he can teach. I think Sofia wants to stay. How does the team feel about her?”
“She is growing on us. Kind of like sexy mold.”
Gill laughed. Sara had always made him laugh. He pulled her closer to him and closed his eyes. He wondered how much longer he had with her.
