Chapter 10 -- Definitely Lost
“H,” Eric said, and his voice shook. “He’s . . . gone. There’s nothing in his eyes.”
“They said they broke him,” the woman who had led him out of the container said, and looked at the pavement. “When they brought him to Vasquez, they laughed about what they did. He didn’t really react, or anything, and then I looked into his eyes, and saw . . . well, you know. We . . . we've kind’ve been taking care of him, but he won’t do anything unless he’s told to . . . and as you can imagine, these weren’t exactly optimal conditions for any kind of decent medical care. I’m sorry.”
“There’s nothing to be sorry for,” H’s voice was extremely kind, and he laid a gentle hand on her shoulder as he gave her a genuine smile. “I am very grateful to you for everything you’ve done so far . . . especially with your own difficulties. I know it couldn’t have been easy,” H said, and his hand trembled as he waved a female officer over. “I’m . . . I’m going to let you go with Officer Cat, now, and she’ll take your statement, and then get you to the hospital.”
“Thank you,” she smiled, and sighed as she gazed one last time at Ryan. “I hope he’ll be okay.”
“Me too,” H said, and Alexx stepped up to Ryan, and he showed no sign of recognition.
“Oh Baby Boy, you didn’t deserve this. No one deserves this,” Alexx said, and tears dripped down her cheeks as she watched while Calleigh and Eric processed him in absolute, pained silence, and then gave the okay for him to be treated. Alexx field dressed his wounds, and washed what blood she could from him, crooning and talking to him the entire time.
They finally put him into an ambulance that seemed to have taken an hour to arrive, and he was taken to the hospital. He was admitted, and for the next few days, Eric, Calleigh, and H stayed with him almost constantly, while Alexx, Boa Vista, and Valera popped in and out.
However, Ryan just lay in the hospital bed and let whatever anyone wanted to do to him, happen. He never raised a fuss, never made a sound, and never reacted to any kind of pain . . . not even when they probed his ribs and discovered that two of them were broken, set his broken finger, patched his broken nose, and cleaned out the deep wounds in his back. It was the same when they put him to sleep for surgery, to repair his damaged insides, and when he opened his eyes after surgery.
And it was the same for the last three days, while he was in the hospital. He just lay in the bed, looked at the ceiling, and did whatever anyone told him to do. The only thing he did on his own, was go to the bathroom.
