Chapter Nine
“Ready. Down. Set,” a member of the football team shouted as the cheerleaders went crazy with cheers on the sidelines during the game, “Blue 47. Blue 47. Hut!”
The ball was passed and quickly thrown as Jason shouted walking across the line, “Nice one Danny!”
“Way to go baby,” a blonde cheerleader squealed as she did a flip for her boyfriend.
Clark was sitting on the bench all decked out in uniform playing with his own football lost in thought. He kept thinking about how much fun he had had with Lindsey last week. The two of them saw each other in chemistry but that was about it. He was busy with football and Lindsey was caught up in drama club and swimming. He really should invite Lindsey over to the farm so the two of them could just hang out or do homework. They were going to have a killer exam in Mr. Sanderson’s class real soon. Maybe the two of them could study sometime?
“Clark,” Jason asked walking up to him with a smile while the game was going on around him, “How’re you doing?”
“I’m good,” Clark said looking up at him as he held his football firmly, “When do I get to play?”
“I talked to Quigley,” Jason said sitting and leaning in close to him so no one else on the bench could hear him, “He feels like he has his team for the season, but hang in there, all right?”
Clark nodded and Jason patted his shoulder before walking away. He really did want to sneer but jumped instead when he busted the ball. He looked around with wide green eyes and sighed in relief. Lucky for him everyone was too caught up in the game to pay him any mind, well, except for a pair of glowing violet eyes.
“Cut it out Mandy,” a voice said and Clark turned his head to see Danny talking to his girlfriend, “I told you I was hanging out with the boys this Saturday.”
“Fine,” she said giving him a smug smile, “Here’s your drink.”
Clark watched him take the drink with a super cocky attitude and then something weird happened after he took a sip. He took Mandy in his arms and kissed her…with tongue. Clark quickly looked away with a rosy blush staining his gold cheeks.

Jason saw one of his players leaving the field and went after him, “Where are you going?”
“I’m going shopping with Mandy,” Danny said giving his coach a big smile, “It makes her happy.”
Jason blinked, “Excuse me?”
Mandy walked over and pecked Danny on the cheek, “I’ll see you in the car, baby.”
“Okay,” Danny said watching her go and then noticed the way Jason was checking out his girl. He grabbed Jason by the arm and demanded, “Are you checking out my girl?”
Jason was bewildered, “What’re you talking about?”
Danny just glared at him and began to walk off the field pissed as hell and Jason yelled, “Danny, you walk off this field, you’ll be on the bench Friday!”
“Bite me,” Danny shouted as he gave him the finger before running off. He was going to show him that nobody looked at his girl like that. Nobody!

Clark could not help but hear the whole thing with being alien and all and he almost jumped out of his skin when Jason shouted his name. He hopped off the bench thinking he had been caught in the act of snooping, “Yeah?”
“Looks like its your lucky day,” he said feeling really pissed at the moment, “Get in there.”
“Cool,” Clark said and took off running only to stop when he realized he had forgotten the ball. He turned around and Jason laughed as he tossed one to him.
He caught the ball and turned around to see two of Danny’s friends looking at him with really pissed off expressions. One stepped forward and poked him on the chest hissing like an angry cat, “Don’t get too comfortable lost boy.”
“Huh,” Clark asked all confused. What did he do wrong? All he wanted to do was play.
“Danny is this team’s quarterback,” another one said and Clark moved to go around them only to allow them to rudely bump shoulders with him. That really hurt his feelings but he did not want to hurt anyone. He didn’t want his dad to be right.
Clark ran up to a guy and got down behind him, “Blue 19!”
The guy spun around angrily, “I’m not the center, idiot.”
“Oh,” Clark said feeling really embarrassed, “Sorry.”
“Oh dear,” Jason said shaking his head wondering where Lana was.
Clark walked over to the other player and got down behind him and shouted, “Blue 19! Hike!”
The ball was quickly given to him and Clark backed up looking for his runner and twisted around causing a guy to go flying by him to land on his face. Clark snorted and found his runner and quickly threw the ball.
“Holy shit,” Jason said as he watched the ball fly and the other guy caught it perfectly, “Nice throw, Clark!”
Clark smiled and fixed his helmet that was on his head sideways. This was a lot of fun. He wondered if any of his friends were watching.

Clark was making his way down the hall to the locker room in his normal clothes to see if he had left his chemistry book in his locker there. If his head had not been attached to his neck he was sure he would misplace that too.
“Hi, Clark,” a cool voice called out to him and he smiled as Lindsey walked out of the art room, “I saw your practice.”
“Really,” Clark asked feeling excited that someone had been watching him, “It was so much fun.”
“I could tell,” Lindsey said coming up to walk beside him, “You did not stop smiling the entire time.”
Clark felt funny walking beside him down the hall. Lindsey wore some really cool clothes and in a way they reminded him of Lex. How did he manage to stay so clean? He must wear different clothes while creating art.
“Yeah,” Clark said while feeling himself blush beside those violet eyes, “Coach Teague said I might get to play Friday.”
“Really,” Lindsey asked and suddenly threw himself in front of Clark when a gunshot went off and several more coming from down the hall.
Clark was bewildered. Why in the world did Lindsey throw himself in front of him? Clark quickly grabbed his arm and pushed him over between a set of lockers.
“Stay here,” he said and quickly too off running down the hall.
“Clark,” Lindsey shouted but he was gone.

Clark ran into the locker room just in time to see Danny holding a shotgun on Coach Teague. They had not seen him yet, so that was a plus.
Jason had his hands out trying to calm his obviously pissed off player down, “Let’s just sit down and talk about this Danny.”
“Too late Coach,” Danny said and cocked the gun one handed, “You shouldn’t have looked at my girl like that.”
He pulled the trigger and Clark went into super mode. He rushed Jason in a red blur getting him out of the way. The shot rang out and shattered glass fell all over the two of them from where the bullet struck the mirror over their heads.
Jason had been knocked out and Clark quickly rolled over when he heard the gun being cocked again. His eyes glowed red and his heat vision struck the gun making it glow red hot. Danny cried out in shock and dropped the gun. He fell to his knees and then fell over on his side out cold.
“Clark,” Lindsey shouted as he ran in to see what looked to be the shooter on the ground and Clark checking on the coach. He looked down at the gun to see that is was partially melted.
He ran over to Clark and knelt down beside him, “Are you okay,” he asked looking him over with concerned violet orbs.
“I’m fine,” Clark said in relief that his coach was going to be all right. It was just a little cut and a bump on the head.
“Thank goodness,” Lindsey said with a shaken smile and turned to look at the shooter in the football uniform just as cops ran in with their guns drawn. He turned back to look at Clark and rolled his eyes, “Well, isn’t this exciting?”
8888888888888888888888888888888888
That night in Lana’s loft she was fighting not to freak the hell out. Her boyfriend who was not suppose to be her boyfriend had been shot at and she had almost fainted in class when Chloe told her.
She was putting some alcohol on a washcloth and turned around as Jason took his shirt off for her. He had a nice gash on his shoulder from where some glass had cut him when he fell.
She was about to put the cloth on the wound when he started to whine like a little baby. She rolled her eyes, “I’ve not even touched you yet.”
“Oh,” he said opening one of his tightly squeezed eyes, “I was just practicing.”
“Good,” she said with a worried face, “Because this is really deep.”
“I’m just lucky that Clark was there to tackle me out of the line of fire like he did,” Jason said looking down at the gash, “It could’ve been worse. I’ve never seen anybody move as fast as the way he does. Somebody should give that boy a medal. I really need to get him off the bench.”
He looked up at Lana with a question on his face.
“What,” she asked.
“Do they still expel students for shooting at their teachers?”
“This isn’t funny you ass hole,” she said looking down at him as if he was crazy, “Imagine being me for five seconds and finding this out from Chloe.”
“Right,” he said while blowing on his shoulder. It stung like a mother. Ouch.
“I felt faint. I wanted to scream but I couldn’t,” she said walking over to the table to put the rag down, “Because why would Lana be freaking out over the new assistant coach?”
Jason got up and moved to put his shirt back on, “This is usually the part where I’d buy you tons of flowers and take out for a nice dinner,” he said moving over to her, “But I can’t because my dad cut me off because I followed my heart instead of the big bucks of business school.”
Lana felt like crying. What if Clark hadn’t been there? What if Danny had shot and killed Jason? What would she do? Where would she be right now? She would be tearing out a bitches intestines and stringing him up by them. That’s what she would be doing. She would be enjoying watching him dance.
“I really need this job,” Jason said trying to soothe her, “It’s something I really love and it works well with my college schedule.”
“What if you had been killed,” Lana asked, “What if Clark had not been there?”
“Hey,” Jason said hugging her close, “I’m fine. I’m right here with you.”
“I’m just upset,” she said looking up at him, “You were shot at and I can’t even voice concern. This is so frustrating.”
“I know we have to keep it under radar,” he said and then smiled, “But you can take your frustrations out on me if you like.”
She laughed and went up on her tiptoes to kiss him.

Lois was pissed as she walked through the doors of the school. It was a new morning and she was still stuck in this cow patty. She hissed at a random student and he jumped out of her way as she snapped at the person on the other end of her cell.
“How about you tell the dean that this is all a terrible misunderstanding,” she asked before yelling, “I belong at Metropolis University not walking the halls of Podunk High!”
Why were people all up in her way? Couldn’t they see that she would like nothing more than to rip their heads off and use their skulls as a piss pot?
“I’m sure that we could work this all out,” she said trying to keep her cool, “If you could just get him to call me back.”
“You could try being a little nicer,” Clark told her as she passed him, “If you spent as much time studying as you did trying to leave, you’d be in college already.”
“Oh,” Lois said turning around to glare at him, “I see someone’s been reading the Farmer’s Almanac.”
“I don’t even know what that is,” he said and then looked down to fix his new team jacked, “Do you like it?”
“Not your colors,” she said seeing if she could piss him off.
“Of course not,” he said following after her, “They’re the schools colors.”
“I’m glad you made the team Clark but why be a Conformist,” she asked, “As lame as it is, the whole farm boy plaid thing completely belongs to you.”
Why was she so damn mean? All he wanted to do was talk to her. She was so loud and bossy. He didn’t want to be mean but he was tired.
“From now on,” he hissed with narrowed eyes that made her narrow her own in surprise at the ire in his voice, “Let’s restrict our conversations to hello and goodbye.”
Lois was about to slit his throat when she started to notice how all the cheerleaders and football players were acting. They were practically being slaves to the girls. They were hanging on their every word and holding all their belongings. One was talking about how cool the pool part was going to be. What pool party?
Lois and Clark both noticed a player holding his girlfriends makeup mirror so she could put her lipstick on perfectly. This was very odd.
“Where the hell are we,” Lois asked, “Some parallel universe?”
The two of them walked into the Torch to see Chloe with Lindsey who was helping her file some things away.
“Chloe,” Lois asked, “Have you seen how the football players are acting?”
“Yeah,” she said handing Lindsey some more things to file, “And I noticed one of them unloaded a shotgun in the locker room too.”
Both Lois and Clark were looking guilty, so she continued, “I was thinking about doing an article on it but the only two reporters I have are late again.”
“Oh,” she said turning to look at the two of them, “Hi, its you.”
Lois held out her hands, “I was fighting with Met U.”
“And I had to pick up my new jacket,” Clark said walking around Lois, “What do you think?”
“Not your colors,” she said.
“It’s the schools colors,” he said and then turned to look at Lindsey who was always stylish, “Not my colors?”
Lindsey smiled, “It’s a nice jacket, Clark.”
Clark beamed. That’s what he was looking for. A compliment. A simple little, “You look nice.” Was that so much to ask for? Really, was it?
“Whatever,” Chloe snorted, “Lois, I need you to go to Smallville Medical Center. Apparently out shooter woke up feeling the sting of his second degree burns. He’s been apologizing nonstop.”
Lois smiled evilly, “Sure he doesn’t love the prospect of playing tight end for the Kansas State Boys Home?”
Clark saw Lindsey smirk at her comment and he smiled at him. That was when Lois’s cell went off again, “Somebody save me!”
“Damn it,” she snapped and picked it up walking out of the room, “Hello?”
Chloe looked a little hurt as Lois ran out of the room in hopes that the dean would let her in.
“I guess I’ll go to Smallville Medical,” she said a little let down, “Clark I need you to talk to Coach Teague since you were there to save him like the hero you always are.”
“Actually Chloe,” he said looking a little sad, “With this whole football thing I’m not going to have much time for the Torch.”
Chloe felt like her heart had been ripped out right then and there. She looked up at him with hurt written all over her face. Now how was she going to be able to spend time with her best friend who was rapidly growing in popularity?
“Oh,” she smiled weakly, “I guess I’ve got my work cut out for me then.”
“I’m sorry,” Clark said looking down at his feet.
“Don’t worry about it,” she said putting a notebook in her bag, “You’re the new quarterback. This has to be exciting.”
“It is,” Clark said with a bright smile, “But I’m just not sure that the other guys want me around.”
“They’ve all played together for three years,” she said while watching Lindsey who had apparently found something more interesting to look at out the window, “You’re on the team for two weeks and now you’re starting. What did you expect, hugs and kisses from all the boys?”
Clark didn’t answer but he did want to be accepted as one of the guys. That was when he got an idea on how he could help Chloe out. He turned around to see Lindsey standing in the bright light shining in from the sun and smiled, “Maybe Lindsey could help you.”
“Huh,” he asked turning around when he heard his name, “Help?”
“Me,” Chloe asked and her mood lightened some, “Would you like a job?”
Lindsey looked at Clark who had “please” written all over his handsome face. He smiled at him and Chloe thought for a moment his smile looked brighter than the beam of light he was standing in, “Sure.”
“Sweet,” Chloe said and immediately put the beautiful man to work.
88888888888888888888888888888888888888
Clark got done with his history exam early and asked Mrs. Applebee if he could go to the library. She, of course, sent him on his merry way. She loved students who loved books. He smiled at her and took his pass before walking out.
He found a nice quiet spot and sat down in his chair to pull his journal out of his backpack. He read some yesterday but got to some sad things about Lex. He held his journal in his hands and suddenly felt afraid. According to this, Lex had been doing some pretty bad things. Did he really want to know that which was forgotten? Why did he have to be so darn curious?
His name is Loth and he says he has come from Krypton to take me home. I thought my world had been destroyed. His power is greater than mine and he can even fly. He took me in his arms and we floated over the roof of the barn. It had been really scary being up that high and I had to close my eyes. I really don’t like heights. He was so…nice…and told me that he would not let me fall. He had that look in his lime green eyes that made me believe him.
He says that he is no threat to me or my loved ones but he did kill a reporter today. He had overheard and gained evidence that I am an alien and he incinerated him along with his car. The reporter would have hurt me and my family but I wouldn’t of killed him.
“He felt no pain, Kal-El.”
Clark looked up and sighed. This was the day he had vanished. He turned the page to another entry. It was the last entry in the whole book. All the other pages were blank. He really should learn to use dates.
How could he do this to me? He promised that he would stop digging into my life. At first I thought Lionel was just getting under my skin because he was upset with my and Lex’s “friendship.” He told me exactly where the room was and I found it. Everything from the past three years was in there and it was all of me. There was pictures of me, pictures of me and the cave drawings, the crash simulation from the bridge accident, and the car itself. It actually felt like Lex had just dug my heart out with a spoon. He had kissed me and fucking promised me that he gave it up!
When I think that I have finally found someone they stab me in the heart. I would rather be stabbed in the back with a blade coated in meteor rock than go through this pain. I love him! I loved him! How could he do this to me? He looked me straight in the eye with such love and promised that he would leave my secrets alone. He lied to me!
I might be sounding like a hypocrite because of my lies but I am protecting myself and him. I was not going to allow anything to happen to Lex like it did Pete when he found my ship.
I’ve made up my mind. I have nothing left here. Jor-El is hurting my dad and I wont allow it. I thought I had love but all I had was lies. I’m going with Loth. Was it worth it Lex? Was my secret worth losing me? You had me! Why wasn’t I enough for you?
A tear slid down his cheek and landed on the page making him blink. Loth? Why did that name sound so familiar to him? Why didn’t Lex say anything? He was acting like they were the best of friends. He looked back at the last question.
“Why wasn’t I enough for you?”
Lex had betrayed him. He felt a sharp pang in his heart and muffled a sob. This wasn’t right. Lex was lying to him right now. Lex had promised him the barn that they’re would be no more lies. Was Lex hoping that he wouldn’t remember?
He shoved his journal back into his pack and felt from the library getting concerned looks from a few of his peers.
888888888888888888888888888888888888888888
He walked into the boys locker room seeing boxes all over the place and asked, “What’s going on?”
Bradley walked up and handed him a jersey that read “KENT” and said, “You owe me Clark. I saved it from the toilet.”
“Thanks,” Clark said suddenly wanting to burn them all with his heat vision. Why were they being so mean to him? It wasn’t his fault that Danny turned out to be some psycho who went trigger happy on his coach over some stupid looks he gave his girlfriend. He rolled his eyes and walked away from the mean looks he was getting. They could all go to that place where people you don’t like are suppose to go when you’re upset with them.
“All right,” Jason said walking in clapping his hands in order to get everyone’s attention, “Listen up. Ya’ll obviously found the new jersey’s. I want to introduce you to the “man” responsible for them.”
He turned around and gave his ex a false smile, “Lex Luthor.”
Clark felt frozen when Lex walked by giving him a warm smile. Why was he here? Why was he doing this? Was he trying to make up for the lie? Was this his way of saying he was sorry? Clark felt his eyes get hot and he looked down at his feet and closed them. Lex promised him no more lies. He lied again.
“Your “coach” tells me that this is going to be a “rebuilding” season,” Lex said looking every player over, “And I want to encourage you to keep at it.”
He really was enjoying the way Jason was looking at him. Did he not like the air quotes?
“”In my life I’ve learned that you can never give up on something that means a lot to you, even if you’re coming off a losing season. You keep trying. You just need a fresh start.”
Jason was nodding his head. What are you up to Lexy?”
Lex turned to look at Clark who was looking at him with empty eyes and Lex refused to frown, “So please enjoy the new uniforms.”
“All right,” Jason said clapping his hands and the team followed his lead except for Clark.
“Shit,” Lex hissed to himself, “Did he get his memory back?”
He smiled at the team and gave his ex a little wave before he walked by Clark only to stop in his tracks when his farm boy said, “I know what you’re doing.”
Lex took a slow breath and steadied himself. He turned around and nearly flinched under those burning emerald green eyes that looked wet and heard Clark whisper, “But you can’t buy back my love.”
Lex felt like he was going to die when Clark walked away but not in time to keep Lex from seeing the tears fall. He had done it again. He had made Clark cry. He was going to head straight to the Kent farm to borrow a shovel from Mr. Kent. He was sure Mr. Kent would lend him a shovel if he explained that he was just going to dig himself a hole straight to hell and that if he liked he could just fill the hole in when he got there.
