Who Survived?
Someone was screaming. Someone was crying. More screaming. Panic. John's eyes snapped open. He was flat on his back, looking into a beautiful blue sky. But this was no paradise. Turning his head, he saw people running every which way. What had happened? It then came back to him. The plane had gone down. And he was alive. Sitting up, he felt an odd sensation. Glancing down at his feet, he saw his left toe twitch. And then his entire foot moved. How was that possible? John then looked at his other foot. It was moving, too. He also realized he had feeling in both his legs. It had to be a miracle. Spotting his shoes near by, he put them on his feet. Would he be able to stand? Tentatively he found his footing. Before John could think more about his regained ability, he heard someone calling out. Glancing over he saw the young dark headed man gesturing for him to come help. Without second thought, the older man ran to assist.
That night, after most of the survivors had settled in for the night, John remained seated near the ocean. He mulled over everything that had taken place that day. Thinking back to the morning, he remembered the bitter fight he and Melissa had. Feeling a tug at his heart, he couldn't believe that he had just spent a wonderful night with the love of his life and in a matter of hours it was all gone. He couldn't help feeling slightly regretful that he had left her on such a bitter note. Now he'd never see her again and she'd never even have the chance to try to win his forgiveness. It all seemed so long ago.
Now, John was on a mysterious island. An island that appeared to have given him back his ability to walk. Glancing down at his legs, he sat in awe. If he had not boarded that plane. If he had not left Melissa, he wouldn't be here now. He wouldn't be able to walk again. He found himself thinking he would give up the ability to walk, just to be with her again. No. No! He had to stop those thoughts. She had lied and used him. He was better off without her, yet, couldn’t help hoping she would find happiness some day.

A few days later, John had returned to camp with a dead boar. Michael, another survivor, had praised him for the kill, while he stood by the fire and the others enjoyed the fresh meat. Nodding his head in acknowledgement, John then strolled off. He felt like being alone. He had accomplished a lot that day. And he had seen something truly amazing. Truly beautiful. Yet, he needed time alone to process it.
As he walked along the beach, his foot hit something in the sand. Looking down, John spotted a stuffed toy. He picked it up, to see that it was a butterfly and immediately thought of Melissa. She had once told him about a stuffed butterfly her grandmother had given her as a child. It and her love for butterflies was why he had purchased the necklace for her in Australia. And now he had found this toy on the beach. Was it possible? No, she wasn't on the flight. And how many of those were made? But it didn’t really matter, did it? John decided he’d give the toy to one of the children who had survived. They’d get some pleasure out of it, if nothing else. He was just about to start walking again, when he turned the butterfly over. Upon doing so, he spotted something written on its tag. As he took a closer look, he read the initials “M.S.”. Melissa's last name was Sumner. He felt his heart quicken. How was that possible? It had to be coincidence. But nothing was coincidence on that island.

Several days later a pregnant woman named Claire was taken. John had tried to help find her with no success. Apparently she had been taken from someone they thought was a fellow survivor. However, they discovered her kidnapper was not on the manifest. John later acquired said manifest from a man known as Hurley. Scanning the list of names, he saw it. Stacy Sumner. His mouth went dry. She really had been on the plane. She had been in the tail section. He remembered the woman named Rose mentioning her husband Bernard had been in the tail section when the plane went down. Rose was more than determined that he was still alive. Was it possible? If Rose could have so much faith Bernard was alive, could Melissa be alive, as well?
