Alfred's Return

CHAPTER TEN

They took refuge at the Wayne manor. Barbara sat on the couch, slightly riled up about nearly being killed. Considering everything including the emotional responses brought on by pregnancy, she seemed to be doing very well. She seemed almost seemed to be her calm, rational self.

Reese was standing behind a leather chair, leaning up against the back of a lounge chair while Helena and Dinah both dressed in their hero attire stood between the chair and couch where Barbara sat. “I’m sorry about your house,” Reese said. “But, I’m glad you’re alright.”

“I appreciate it. I appreciate all of you for coming to my rescue,” Barbara replied.

“Don’t worry about our house,” Richard added. “We can replace everything that was loss easily.

“What was up with that anyway?” Helena asked. “I’ve heard or gang riots but high society riots? If the situation hadn’t been so serious, I would have laughed.”

“She’s right,” Dinah added. “If they were really business men and women, they sure were not acting like themselves. It was almost as if…”

“They were not in control of themselves,” Barbara completed Dinah’s line of thought.

“So someone is brainwashing people to start these hate crimes against the other, “ Reese finished the line of thought started by Dinah and Barbara.

“All wee have is pure speculation and circumstantial evidence,” Barbara replied.

“Why attack Barbara though?” Richard brought up. His main concern was his wife’s safety. “She’s not a meta?”

“Something convinced them that she was, “Reese answered. All they were getting from this discussion were more questions and not enough answers and Reese was uncomfortable with that.

“They did seem to think that they were able to somehow see meta powers in me,” Barbara added, confirming what Reese had just said.

Dinah was thinking about that last statement, and the more she did, the more confused she got. “Is that even possible: to know someone has meta powers strictly by sight?”

“I don’t know, “Barbara shook her head. She was baffled by this mystery. “We’re missing an important piece of this puzzle.” Barbara leaned on the arm of the couch, apparently deep in thought.

“We should be able to get some answers,” Reese said, waking Barbara up from her deep contemplation. “Officer Ashton was able to apprehend on of the rioters. By the time we got him in jail, he was out cold as if he had overdosed on drugs or something. If Dinah can come with me, I’m sure we can clear up some of the mystery by questioning him.”

“I’m up for it.” Dinah shrugged.

“I heard that Wayne Manor was alive once more. I suppose I had to come and find out for myself,” A friendly, gentle voice said from the doorway. Startled, everyone turned their head to see a close friend from the past. “Alfred!” Barbara spoke out with amazement!

“Good evening, miss Gor...” Alfred stopped himself, remembering about her name change. “I beg for your forgiveness, Ms. Grayson soon to be Mrs. Grayson.” He dropped his suitcase to the ground and entered the room.

Richard offered himself as her aid to help her stand to her feet. Barbara greeted Alfred with a friendly hug. “It’s really good to see you again, Alfred.”

“To be perfectly honest, I am very happy to be back.” Alfred turned around and was greeted by Helena first with a hug. He then turned towards Dinah who’s smile radiated. “My, Miss Lance, If I may be so bold, you look rather smashing. You are no longer that young teenage girl who I would make her favorite sandwich.”

Dinah laughed as they hugged. “Thank you, Alfred.” She remembered those days where Alfred would sneak her her favorite sandwich: bologna, liverwurst, and cheese. Most of the time, right about the time she was getting hungry and thinking about going to the kitchen to make it herself, Alfred seemed to read her mind and brought her too her.

Richard was next in line to welcome Alfred home. “How ya’ doing old man?”

Alfred raised both his eyebrows. “Excuse me? Old man? May I remind you that I was younger than you are now when I took this job from Master Thomas Wayne. In short, you’re no spring chicken anymore either.”

Everyone laughed, happy to forget their troubles even for a minute of light hearted humor. Alfred laughed along with everyone. ”It appears that the gang is all here. Is it safe to say that the Birds of Prey are back in flight?”

Barbara nodded. “It’s a little different than before, and we’re learning to make adjustments as we go along.”

“We need to adjust mainly to Dinah’s new kick ass fighting skills!” Helena laughed, gently shoved Dinah by the shoulder.

“Then may I recommend making your base of operations somewhere more suitable to your needs?”

“What do you mean?” Barbara eyed him suspiciously. “The Bat Cave is all we have.”

“The Bat Cave served Master Bruce quite well during his day, but it has become outmoded. You need something that will meet your needs for these days, the next generation of heroes.”

“What did you have in mind?” Barbara asked.
