Chapter 10
Greg slid into the break room ala Seinfield’s Kramer. “I have the Valentine’s Day front desk report.”

All eyes were on him as he strutted around the break room like a roster in the yard.“Sofia leads the pack with four long stem dozen red roses. This most likely means that Sofia has a very serious romantic entanglement that is sure to end with a marriage proposal, if not today then certainly in the near future.” Sofia smiled at Greg’s assessment. “

Sofia is followed closely by Catherine who has two dozen red roses and one dozen peach roses. Catherine has two separate things going on here. She too has a serious love interest, two dozen is hardly anything to sneeze at. This suitor too is thinking of something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. The peach posies are probably from her dad or her best friend, just wanted to show they appreciate you.” Catherine tipped her head in admiration of Greg’s perceptive abilities.

The young man did a little bow and came to where Sara sat continued a she took note of the fact that Warrick was watching Catherine’s reaction. “Third in line we have the enigmatic Sara Sidle with one dozen long stemmed red roses in the tradition white box that no one sees much anymore. Ms. Sidle also had a very intense love life. This man is trying to create the beginnings of a very romantic evening and a very traditional evening. I am thinking a little dancing, maybe a gondola ride the Venice, dinner at the Tangiers. This is the kind of man that owns his own tux and listens to Carmen.” Everyone pretended not to notice the veiled reference to Grissom.

“Next up, we have the lovely Mia. New to our fold but certainly not to be spared from my eagle eyed protectiveness. Mia has one long stemmed rose in a crystal bud base. What does it mean? It means I like. I want to get to know you.” Greg held a blank piece of paper up to his forehead. “Have dinner with me and see where life leads us.”

Mia narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “I hope he’s not short.”

Greg moved past the indictment. “Now for the men of CSI afterall this is the 21st century and the phone is made for dialing and receiving. In the lead, we have Nick Stokes.” Warrick punched his friends arm. “Yes, Mr. Stokes has broken a male CSI love day record by being the only unmarried man to ever receive a full dozen of roses.” Nick bowed to whistles and applause.

“Not a shabby second by any means we have Mr. Warrick, I got the dreamy eyes, Brown with a half dozen red roses and a small box which could contain anything from a room key to a ring. I am betting on the key.” Greg moved beside Grissom Sara kept her face impassive and relaxed. “That takes us to you and me big guy. We got nothing.”

Gil spoke good naturedly “Speak for yourself. I have a life, Greggo.”

Catherine noted the vein throbbing above his right eye. He was a good poker player but not good enough when Sara was the prize.

~~~~~~
Gil looked the ring one last time before he put it back in the black velvet box. “Very nice, Matthew.”
“That’s almost flawless. Maybe I should go work for the casinos.”
The younger Grissom shut the box and looked at the clock. “I guess I better get going.”
Gil took a pull from his beer. “You have thirty minutes before you have to leave. Calm down.” He took another drink. “You sure about this, Matthew? You haven’t known her that long.”
“When you know you know.”
Gil thought about Sara. The flower delivery just before shift had not surprised him, but it had hurt.
“You got any plans today or tomorrow. Sofia said you guys were doing the staggered days off for Valentine ’s Day.”
“I don’t have anything planned.”
Matthew knew that I, his brother, was a great deal of pain. He couldn’t figure out what to do about it. Sofia had told him about Sara’s flower day delivery
Gil sat there feeling more like Matthew’s father than his brother as he looked to make sure his tie was straight, his shoes were shined and socks matched. “You look good, Matthew.”
“What if she says no?”
“She won’t, Matty.”
Matthew wondered how his brother always knew what to say. He supposed it came with age.
Then why doesn’t he know what to do about Sara?
