Chapter 10

“Emily, I want you to listen very carefully to me okay,” Brian said, an hour later as they got ready for a ‘session’. He had insisted that Emily eat something before hand as well as change into her favorite “My Little Pony” PJ’s since it was so late in the day. He knew once Emily returned from her search, she would be too tired to do either.

Emily nodded and she lay down on the couch where they usually held the planned projections.

As he covered her with her favorite “My Little Pony” blanket, he said, “I want you to find your friend but don’t stay with her,” before she could protest, he went on, “It’s very important you find out where she is and let me know. As soon as you tell me, I want you to come back. Do you understand?” he explained.

The little girl nodded her head and Brian hoped that she would listen even if she didn’t understand the reasons why.

“Okay, Emily. Close your eyes and relax,” he caressed her hair and moved it away from her face as she closed her eyes and started to take deep breaths.

After a few minutes, Brian moved away from the sofa and sat gingerly on the low coffee table situated in front of it. One drastic difference between the night she helped Mikey Taylor and the other planed sessions, since than, was that she never looked like her soul had left her body. While she always went into a deep sleep-like trance, her color remained and he was always able to discern a slow pattern of breathing. She simply looked like she was sleeping on her trips to the toy store.

For the first time tonight tears began to well up in his eyes as he watched the sister, he had grown to love more than life itself these past few months, slowly slip away from the body on the couch.

First, her breathing slowed to a rate that he was barely able to detect. The color of her cheeks leeched of color until a chalky gray was left. The skin around her eyes and her lips turned a bruised blue as the color of her shining brown hair dulled and lost its curl.

He was scared; scared of losing the only family he had left. At that moment, he wanted nothing more than to wake Emily from her trance and bring her back to life. He wanted the vibrant child back. She was only just beginning to come out of her shell around him.

As he sat, watching her, he wondered if his parents had known about Emily’s unique gift. Thinking back to when she was a quiet baby and the discussions between his Mom and Dad, when he had been visiting on holiday, he came to the conclusion that they had at least suspected that something was…unique about their little girl. He thought back about what Emily had said that she was afraid that he would leave because she was different. They may not have understood it, but they knew there was something special about her.

He watched for a moment longer and than leaned forward. At first he didn’t know what to say to her, to help her start the process of finding one unique child instead of randomly selecting one. Finally, he decided to just ask.

“Emily, where is Heidi?” he whispered.

Several moments passed before Emily’s breathing hitched slightly. Brian knew that this was the sign of when Emily had reached a particular destination.

“It’s so dark,” she whispered.

“Emily, where are you?” Brian asked, worried that she would wander around looking for her friend instead of finding out where she was.

“I don’t know…It’s too dark…I see a window…and the moon,” several moments passed as he waited for Emily to continue.

“There’s a door,” she whispered.

“Can you open the door, Sweetie?” his voice never raising above a whisper.

Her head nodded slightly.

“Are you outside?” he asked.

“Yesss…I see one of those signs…It say…Sa…Saaaa,” she stuttered slightly.

“Go ahead and spell it out for me, Sweetie,” Brian grabbed a pen and piece a paper that he had set aside just incase.

“S..A..B..I..N..O..Canyon Street,” she spelled out the unfamiliar street sign.

“Okay, Emily…I want you to look back at the house you just came from. Do you see a number on the house? Can you tell me about the house?”

She was silent until, “I think the house is blue…but it’s too dark…I don’t see a number.”

Brian knew that in order to help Heidi, they would need to have the house number. Sabino Canyon Street wasn’t one of the main streets, but it was still several miles long. It would take hours if not days for local police to check out every house and he suspected that Heidi didn’t have that long. He came to one of the hardest decisions he had to make yet, regarding Emily.

“Emily…I need you to go back into the house…try to find some mail or something that will let you know the number on the house,” he whispered to Emily.

He waited for Emily to follow his instructions.

“It’s so dark…I’m in the living room…Oh, I found a letter.”

“Okay, I need to know what it says in the middle of the envelope.”

“It says John A…”

“Just spell it out for me, Sweetie.”

“A..M..E..R..Y and than it says 1..3..5..0..then that “S” word and Canyon. Las Vegas,” she continued.

“Okay, Emily…I need you to come home,” he waited until Emily’s complexion began to return to its normal rosy self.

Knowing that Emily wouldn’t awaken right away, he got up to go to the phone, to call the police. He dialed the local station.

“Yes, I have information on the missing girl, Heidi. Yes, I think she is at 1350 Sabino Canyon,” he listened to the operator for a moment and turned back to Emily. He was shock to see that his sister had returned to her previous condition.

His fears were verified when he heard his little sister whisper, “Heidi?”

“Oh, shit,” he turned back to the phone, “Hurry and get there.” And without any further words he hung up. He practically ran back to the sofa, “Emily, you need to come home.”

“I hear her, Brian…She’s crying.”

“No, Emily. Come home NOW,” he said sternly.

Emily only shook her head slightly.

He had never tried to force her out of a projection and he really didn’t have any idea how to do so. He could only hold his breath as he waited and listened for what would happen next.

“Heidi? It’s me, Emily…” she said quietly, “Are you okay?”

After a few moments, Emily’s breathing quickened, “Brian?...There’s a man here.”

“Emily, please come home. Don’t stay, baby,” he pleaded, a feeling of dread filled him.

Tears began to escape her closed eyes and Brian barely heard her next words, “Don’t hurt her…Leave her alone.”

He kneeled beside the couch, as close as he could get without touching her, “Emily, please. Turn around and come home.”

“He’s hurting her”

“Please, Emily come home,” he continued to plead with the little girl.

Brian was shocked at Emily’s next actions.

“LEAVE HER ALONE!...STOP IT!” she screamed, trying to stop the man who was hurting her friend.

Brian had had enough; he grabbed Emily by the arms and raised her slightly off the sofa.

“EMILY, COME BACK,” he yelled frantically, trying to force the little girl to awaken.

Emily started to scream as soon as Brian touched her. She began thrashing violently and it took everything in Brian to try and stop her from hurting herself, without him inadvertently hurting her. He wrapped the blanket firmly around her, encasing her body and keeping her arms pinned to her side.

“STOP IT!...STOP IT!...BRIAN, MAKE HIM STOP!” Emily continued to scream.

“I’m here, Sweetie. Come home, Emily,” he held her, trying to sooth the hysterical little girl. He rocked her back and forth, holding her tightly to him with one arm and caressing her curly hair with the other.

Emily’s screams slowly receded and finally sobs racked the little body he held in his arms. An hour passed when Emily finally calmed down and was soon asleep. Brian continued to hold and rock the little girl well into the night.

It was early morning before Brian finally stood up from the sofa, and with Emily still wrapped in her blanket, he carried her up to her room. After he had laid Emily down on her bed, he sat on the floor with his back leaning against her mattress frame. He was exhausted and worried. The possible ramifications of tonight’s events on Emily worried him. He didn’t even want to think about what Emily had seen in that house. How was this going to affect Emily?

His head fell backward, onto the mattress behind him. He closed his eyes and images of a silent Emily, emotionally scarred for life, played out in his head. These thoughts turned into nightmares as he fell asleep.
